luckystrike··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (January 2013)
SEEKING WORK - Remote

I have been shipping software for more than 10 years now, and love building high-quality products (or at least try my best for it!). I started freelancing a few months ago after my stint as a single founder. One of my first clients was a HN member for whom I did remote contract work for almost a couple of months.

I am proficient with Ruby on Rails and generally quite adept at picking up new technologies as per the needs of the product. I call myself a generalist, and if you are a non-technical person, I can handle most of the things for you that go in to building & launching a software product (including screen flows, server-side programming, system administration, analytics & a little bit of digital marketing.)

To give an example of me trying out new things, my current gig is related to conversion optimization(s) and driving growth for a startup in the education domain. I am up for any work that is challenging & stimulating.

I am open to a potential co-founder role as well, but as you know well, a lot of things need to fall in place for it. I guess it would be best if we work together on a short project first to see how good we are as a team.

Please see my profile for the contact & other relevant information. Just drop a line to say hello, it's always good to interact with fellow HN members!

luckystrike··on Ask HN: Help me with the architecture of my SAAS web application.
I built my SaaS application using Rails & decided to have a separate PostgreSQL schema for each customer's data. It seemed a neater option to me rather than putting account_id kind of field in all of the tables. Also, having a full fledged database for each customer was an overkill for my application.

luckystrike··on Ask HN: Advice for sole dev on massive project
From my own experience, I know it gets hard sometimes working as a solo developer when you don't have anyone else around to discuss the technical details.

If you want to bounce off ideas or discuss anything related to this project with someone, please feel free to contact me. I'd be happy to assist you in my free time.

Good going, Sid. How long did it take you to reach this stage? I have recently started looking out for freelance work, and since I don't much else to show apart from my startup, it has been fairly tough to get high paying clients.

I still haven't signed up on the sites like Elance etc, but looks like might have to bite the bullet soon.

luckystrike··on Achieving overnight success: Tom Preston-Werner
This reminded me of Chris Wanstrath's (GitHub Co-founder) talk/post where he said:

But it wasn't an overnight eureka, and it wasn't intentional.
I didn't just walk out of high school, pick up a Ruby book, meet Tom and PJ,
  then launch the site GitHub.

Before GitHub came, in chronological order, Spyc, Ozimodo, my ozmm.org, tumblelog,
ftpd.rb, Choice, Err the Blog, acts_as_textiled, Cheat!, acts_as_cached, Mofo,
Subtlety, cache_fu, Sexy Migrations, Gibberish, nginx_config_generator,
fixture scenarios builder, Sake, Ambition, and Facebox.

And that's just the stuff I released.

luckystrike··on 7 years and no success. I need help.
Get a job and put your startup/consulting plans on hold for a while (6 months?). After this cool down period, re-evaluate your priorities in life and then charter out your next steps.

I know it is easier said than done but don't let your past experiences bog you down. You don't even know how all those dots would connect in the future.

All the best.

luckystrike··on As an entrepreneur in India

The solution I have come up with, something we intend to adopt in Zoho,
is to abandon major cities, and move to much, much smaller towns.
This definitely is a good move especially for a company like Zoho that has an excellent training & skill building program.

I personally would like to do the same once my startup gets going and of course assuming other things fall in place. Probably, that's an advantage for a bootstrapped company rather than a funded one, where one might be forced to stick to such bigger cities with moral suffering.

luckystrike··on Ask HN: Best way to outsource well spec'd out project
I wrote this comment on the India specific HN version that has some suggestions on how to go about finding a good offshore development firm - http://hackerstreet.in/item?id=1058

The suggestions are quite generic and might be of some help even if you are looking for a freelancer/firm in any other geographic region as well.

luckystrike··on I just don’t get LinkedIn, do you?
Personally, LinkedIn has worked for me in allowing me to connect with a number of people working in the Education sector. (My startup targets K-12 space in India.)

This includes School Principals, Teachers, and other firms with whom I can possibly collaborate in future.

LinkedIn certainly ain't the best in many respects, but does serve a purpose at times.

luckystrike··on How a simple comment on Hacker News made me quit my job and launch a startup
Great. I think it also helps that you were at a senior position in Zoho. Apart from the visibility and a large network, it probably makes it a little more convincing for people who are on the fence when it comes to joining such a venture.
luckystrike··on How a simple comment on Hacker News made me quit my job and launch a startup

Now we have a team of six people - (3 developers, 1 UI/UX designer,
1 QA / Customer support engineer and me as - the Product Manager / CEO)
It would be great if you could throw some light on how you went about building this team and your hiring process. In my experience, it ain't easy here in India to find quality talent willing to work in an early stage startup whose product is still not out in the market.

Did they come through the connections made during your Zoho stint?

All the best for this venture!

You still really think he did all of that only because of YC's ~6% stake in them?
