lucidguppy··on Chipotle stock craters: young people without jobs cannot afford their food
They make them that big because they try to justify the price.
lucidguppy··on Ford Aims for Revolution with $30k Electric Truck
I'm all for it - I want it to happen, but I'm driving a used EV right now living the good life. The age of EV hype is gone, now we need real products.
lucidguppy··on Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Gains Momentum in the U.S.
Oh look at this nuclear power ... no stop looking at solar and batteries! That would actually solve the problem!
lucidguppy··on Heat stress mitigation by trees and shelters at bus stops
You can have a pretty good simulacrum of a forest using only two tennis courts worth of land (a pittance in most US cities that have 30% reserved for parking).

Look up Miyawaki method.

lucidguppy··on The Friendship Recession: The lost art of connecting
1. People have lower tolerance for jerks.

2. A few bad apples can spoil a group.

3. Maintaining a group is a thankless job.

4. Third places are money making establishments now rather than community focused. So people save up to go to the ones that they'll remember. So there's competing money for these attractions, and the experience undergoes enshitification.

Solutions?

- lower the cost of community space so more people can enjoy them.

- social etiquette needs be enforced through culture. Conformity has its benefits. We don't need planes to land because Johnny had too much to drink.

lucidguppy··on Electric Propulsion's Dirty Secret: Why Lithium Can't Fly (Or Float) Profitably
Flight is a luxury of the current times that will likely not last another 100 years except for the very rich.
lucidguppy··on Wealthy Americans have death rates on par with poor Europeans
1) You have to walk in Europe. 2) People eat better.
lucidguppy··on The Lost Towers of the Guelph-Ghibelline Wars
I wonder if there's a D&D setting like this.
lucidguppy··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
The Normans strike again!
lucidguppy··on Natrium 'advanced nuclear' power plant wins Wyoming permit
I'm quite ambivalent about nuclear power. On the one hand it's been proven that nuclear power isn't the answer to the energy transition question (https://sppga.ubc.ca/nuclear-is-not-the-solution/) - on the other hand - it makes up waaay more of my current carbon free energy.

For southern states, or states that get a lot of solar power, they shouldn't have nukes.

For areas that have plenty of wind, they shouldn't have nukes.

For areas with lots of people, they shouldn't have nukes.

Areas of seismic activity, they shouldn't have nukes.

Research needs to be done on how to lower the cost of interconnect and installation of solar power... like billions of dollars of research rivaling nuke research.

lucidguppy··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
I hope they fix the issues with the controllers dying.
lucidguppy··on How Boston City Hall was born
Older structures cost more because they lasted longer and were more maintainable. Growth was given priority over tradition - and we've had to deal with the tradeoffs.
lucidguppy··on Honeycrisp apples went from marvel to mediocre
support pick your own orchards
lucidguppy··on How Honeycrisp Apples Went from Marvel to Mediocre
I wonder if you could test for crispness using ultrasonic tech.

Just make sauce out of the mealy ones.

lucidguppy··on When the U.S. Forest Service's budget shrinks, who pumps campground toilets?
Duh - sell the parks to a golf resort developer!
lucidguppy··on Why Companies Are Ditching the Cloud: The Rise of Cloud Repatriation
Right here - network is expensive. Another issue is cost estimation.

Servers have prices, rack space has prices, engineers have salaries.

You now literally have people hired now to work on how to calculate infra costs on aws (finops). Spot prices fluctuate. So what are the real savings in FTEs?

lucidguppy··on What's New in F# 9
Its weird they didn't switch to C# - that would have been a much smoother transition to a memory managed brackety language.
lucidguppy··on Get me out of data hell
> I could build something superior to this with an ancient laptop, an internet connection, and spreadsheets. It would take me a month tops.

^^^ Then do it... and then strangler fig the original.

lucidguppy··on Get me out of data hell
> because we don't have any tests,...

Right there ^^^

lucidguppy··on Character amnesia in China
Yeah - that was my mistake.
lucidguppy··on Character amnesia in China
There are benefits to both systems. Western readers have a hard time reading older writing - while eastern readers have no problem with very old texts.

On the other hand - western scholars can understand what the spoken word sounded like - but eastern readers have a much harder time what ancient words sounded like.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rime_dictionary

Western writing systems "decay" faster. Look at french writing - the spellings are phonetic for the time they were first put to paper - but they sound nothing like the current pronunciations.

lucidguppy··on Boeing CEO says the company must fundamentally change
Don't CEOs care about their legacy when they play the "big boy" game with all the other oligarchs?
lucidguppy··on Boeing CEO says the company must fundamentally change as losses surge
Hahahaha, wait you're serious? Let me laugh even harder HAHAHAHAAHAH.

In all seriousness - Boeing should be called McDonnell Douglas - the merger was encouraged by the Pentagon after the cold war.

Don't let bad management team infect your company - there's a reason why this company you want to buy is on a fire sale.

lucidguppy··on One possible housing crisis solution? Public housing for all income levels
I don't think free markets in land constrained areas is possible for real estate.
lucidguppy··on New research says "blue zones" can be explained by flawed data
Yay that there's research into adding nuance to results.

Science should sharpen science.

Deep down we know how we should eat and live. Society and the economy, though has different plans.

lucidguppy··on Navy Ad: Gig Work Is a Dystopian Unregulated Hellscape, Build Submarines Instead
That's mostly because submarines operate in water that is on average 4℃
lucidguppy··on How does it feel to test a compiler?
Can you imagine being one of the five people in the universe that has confident knowledge of c++ undefined behavior?
lucidguppy··on Pre-Work for Setting OKRs
Why can't we just use goals? What is so wrong about using the word that everyone understands?
lucidguppy··on Priced out of home ownership
How about developing the "missing middle" in urban development.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_middle_housing

Efficient and healthy land use for housing was solved in the 1900s - we don't need tiny homes.

lucidguppy··on More nuclear energy means less mining
If you keep it forever in R&D you can have it as a carrot and never as a competitor. Tons and tons of cash that could go into battery or panel factories. And because they have the media in their pocket they can easily turn the knob on favor or disfavor of nuclear power.

Solar is the solution now because America dithered and fumbled nuclear energy in the 60s - 80s. Now nuclear cannot be built because every estimate has been 1/10th the actual cost for plants built in this millennium. Glow rocks are dead - use fusion power from the sky.
