luchadorvader··on Ask HN: What's your dream as a programmer?
that I will succeed in making a spreadsheet editor that is better then excel (not hard) and will be widely use by the majority of people (hard). I want to destroy excel after the all the time I've had to endure vba or deal with its stupid intricacies . im bitter. and I hate excel
luchadorvader··on Why I Created YADA
grep is simple to use from a simple command. Setting up a Java server and maintaining it is quite a different challenge then running a command with a few parameters. I wouldn't use it because if it goes down, fuck. If I need to extend it or decide to change something in there, fuck. I would want to use something that is easier for me to fix and maintain or my coworkers to fix/maintain, then have a product built from multiple languages that require too many different types of people to keep it running.
luchadorvader··on Why Go gets criticized so much
Are they both your favorite languages? Also there will always be exceptions.
luchadorvader··on Why Go gets criticized so much
I agree that a language doesn't define you but what I wonder if a person's favorite language has some correlation to certain personality traits. I would be lieing if I didn't say I get more enjoyment from some languages where other people don't. Perl vs Python for example, pythons core values are to try and make it only one way to achieve something, whereas Perl tries to give you multiple ways to achieve something. I would guess that Perl may appeal more to artistic people and Python would appeal to more engineering type of people. This isn't a claim, more just something I think would be interesting to investigate.
luchadorvader··on Ask HN: Why are clickbait titles bad?
I understand your point of view, I guess I'm more bothered by how it seems to me that people are quickly to yell clickbait and just that which if anything could bring more attention to the article. I almost feel likes it's yelling "Don't look!", which is going to make me look.
luchadorvader··on Ask HN: Why are clickbait titles bad?
And that's the type of reaction I would encourage. Yes you stop clicking on a lot of articles, but you're less likely to waste your time. I find that instead of going to around yelling clickbait, just ignore it, or at least make your time useful and either build something from the article or explain why it's bad so others could learn to ignore more stuff that source
luchadorvader··on Source code for Lua 5.3
Why do you say Lua is better designed? And are you comparing classic JS or ES6 JS? I like Lua but there are some things that just annoy me like indexing an array with 1, smaller standard library, etc. I find JS implementation of inheritance, objects, and prototyping better than Lua due to its simplicity.
luchadorvader··on HaxeDevelop: A Haxe IDE on Windows
this looks really cool but have there been any recent updates or is the source code anywhere I can look at?

luchadorvader··on Lang: Python module for enforcing programming language constraints
I feel like this is the most anti-pythonic thing I've ever seen.
luchadorvader··on jQuery.sheet – Easy and fast spreadsheets for the web
If I was developing a spreadsheet in the browser I would use the lowest level abstraction possible for performance (which is what they're doing since the jQuery is just a wrapper). When you're potentially managing tens of thousands of rows of cells no matter what you use its going to start to chug and solutions using abstraction on top of abstraction on top of abstraction will start to chug a whole lot quicker than vanilla JS.
luchadorvader··on Grommet – User Experience for the Enterprise
What is the support for IE? I can't find it. I figure that would be very important if it's going after enterprise companies.
luchadorvader··on LibreOffice: How good are we compared to Microsoft Office?
One thing that irks me about libre office is its hacky VBA support. I would think that they would try to support it where I could open an excel file and have the VBA code run the same in both platforms. But a lot of the time it crashes even with that VBA support tag at the top.

If they could provide full support for that I could see a lot of my customers switching to Libre Office for their reports and business tools which in turn would let me switch to it as well.

My dream spreadsheet software: Lightweight (remember this is a dream) Full support for VBA Scripting alternative in Python SANE scripting API Open source Cross platform Modern UI

luchadorvader··on Ask HN: What is a good scriptable text editor
I was hoping for something with GUI because I'm lazy, but I really should stop putting off learning vim :|
luchadorvader··on So this is why JavaScript is being mocked
I know this isn't mature but I keep seeing penises
luchadorvader··on LÖVE 0.10 released with iOS and Android support
I just don't understand comments like these. Providing a blanket statement that doesn't provide any reasons whatsoever. It doesn't really help contribute to the post, and it just angers people. I hate the term troll, but that's what this feels like. If you actually feel this way then I feel bad that you restrict yourself to only one type of tool. Also I find it confusing when functional evangelicals talk bad about OO and mutable languages when a lot of the languages compilers are built on languages like C. They wouldn't even have functional languages without C.
luchadorvader··on The Forbes 50 Hottest Startups of 2015 – Ranked by Growth Score
You have to create an account to see the full list. I'm good with just the first ten.
luchadorvader··on Show HN: Practice foreign languages with books (parallel translation and speech)
I like this idea a lot, but it's somewhat difficult to use when you have to flip back and forth in a sentence to connect parts of it together especially since a lot of languages cannot be translated word for word. It would be nice to see both the sentence and translation at the same time, maybe in a sidebar or a tooltip that hovers above the sentence with the translation. But this is something that I really enjoy using in conjunction with something like duo lingo.
luchadorvader··on DataGrip 1.0 (formerly 0xDBE): A New IDE for DBs and SQL
I'm going to give it a shot again, but when I tried before it was buggy with support for that version. It seemed like it technically connected but it wouldnt run any queries nor show any of the columns. Now that it's 1.0 I'll try again but I can't spend too much time fighting it. I really want to be able to use it but time unfortunately equals money :/.
luchadorvader··on DataGrip 1.0 (formerly 0xDBE): A New IDE for DBs and SQL
Absolutely agree with HeidiSQL. I'm in a situation where I'm still running MySQL 4.0.26 and essentially nothing properly supports that with the exception of the old MySQL query client (not workbench) and HeidiSQL which blows mysqls software out of the water. It's a really solid software.
luchadorvader··on Ask HN: What Android devices do you use? Do you like them?
I have a nexus 9 and had a nexus 5 (turns out it can't survive the ocean) as well as a nexus 7.

I love unmodified android. I won't get an android device that another company has modified due to how long, if at all, they take to get updates. I also think they're kinda ugly or gimmicky anyways.

Nexus 5 and 7 I loved.

Nexus 9 is disappointing. It's just not powerful enough to provide a smooth experience for me.

Developing wise, I'm conflicted. I've done iOS and android development. I don't like Java and I like ios's framework pattern but android is easier to get up and running IMO which is nice. Also now that iOS has Swift, which I think is a lot better than objc, it makes it harder for me to want to develop for Android. I know you can develop in a bunch of different things for android, but if I was doing something for production, I'm not going to be using something not supported by Google.

luchadorvader··on It’s completely ridiculous to think that humans could live on Mars
It is ridiculous but at the same time tackling a problem of this size will provide so many new solutions to other problems as well innovations for new things that we might have not thought of. What we can gain from trying might be worth doing.
luchadorvader··on Giants of IT. The giants on whose shoulders we stand. One each day
Just curious but why not Lovelace or gates?
luchadorvader··on Paper is Dropbox's new vision for how teams can work together
Really? If so I'm interested. I would love to help with a project like this, I'm tired of passing word docs, excel sheets around to customers with the chance that I might have something out of date.
luchadorvader··on Ask HN: Best book/resource for SEO?
I would just trust the first option to appear when you google for it.
luchadorvader··on Ask HN: Why don't transistors in microchips fail?
I wouldn't think it was that surprising. Businesses, especially consoles, want to be seen as reliable and good quality in order to develop a strong relationship with their customers. If it commonly fails right after the minimum warranty, then why would someone want to buy something again that is unreliable? They wouldn't and would go right to the competition.
luchadorvader··on The thing I hate about HTML (2010)
Bragging? I don't think s/he is bragging, but just saying that html can be done wrong.
