lucaspottersky··on The buns in McDonald's Japan's burger photos are all slightly askew
additionally, BK shows this terrible modal banner to "use our app instead". gross.
lucaspottersky··on No more O'Reilly subscriptions for me
their UX is terrible. any decent PDF reader beats it. no more for me as well.
lucaspottersky··on NPM Is Joining GitHub
WHAT. A. JOKE.
lucaspottersky··on How some good corporate engineering blogs are written
tldr: fast track post approvals
lucaspottersky··on Will Spotify Ruin Podcasting?
> Why would you voluntarily give up that freedom?

i don't even need a word to answer that: $.

lucaspottersky··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
yeah. my bookmarks are basically for a quick access of things that i access over and over again, but that i can't reach out simply by typing in the address bar.

lucaspottersky··on Grafana Labs raises $24M
I tried it 2 years ago. It was easy to get started, but not quite straightforward to extend it and use custom panels.

Also, it didn't support image uploads, you'd need to host them somewhere else if you wanted them to show up in a panel. rather inconvenient.

lucaspottersky··on Solar and Wind Power So Cheap They’re Outgrowing Subsidies
cant read. paywall. nice internets.
lucaspottersky··on The exponential function is a miracle
for ages we've been adding the miracle tag for things we don't fully understand.

just get used to it.

lucaspottersky··on Sunsetting Python 2
sounds like they should probably sunset Python 3 instead
lucaspottersky··on Regex Crossword
should make the input 1st focus and jump to the next in fewer seconds (or after double enter)
lucaspottersky··on TypeScript vs. ReasonML
> "And while having that familiarity with JavaScript is nice, it means that every quirkiness that we love and hate about JavaScript is still there in TypeScript

> "... ReasonML is everything TypeScript tries to be (and a bit more) without all that JavaScript weirdness."

yeah, but what makes the author think that __INSERT NEW LANGUAGE HERE__ would not have other 'quirkiness'?

lucaspottersky··on Show HN: Hacker News Clone – Clojure, GraphQL Learning Project
thats a lot of code
lucaspottersky··on John Carmack on the Joe Rogan Experience [video]
yeah, but he could take a breath every once in a while
lucaspottersky··on John Carmack on the Joe Rogan Experience [video]
> “Engineering is figuring out how to do what you want with what you’ve actually got”

same lines as... _life is figuring what to do with what you’ve got_.

lucaspottersky··on YouTube faces creator backlash
false. you clearly don't know what you're talking about, sorry.

youtubers are getting strikes for background music, using famous chord progressions, teaching music snippets, mentioning songs etc.

lucaspottersky··on YouTube faces creator backlash
I have compiled a few videos from youtuber music educators that I follow. The current situation is worse than most of us think. One of them, Paul Davis, even had a copyright strike for playing HIS OWN music. LOL! So ludicrous!

- Craziest COPYRIGHT STRIKE from YouTube ever?! (Paul Davis) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvH77m_3MVU

- What I want to teach, but can't, thanks to Universal Music Group. (Adam Neely) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nryFmUjtwEY

- Why Record Labels STILL Suck! (Rick Beato) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoTl9V8cjH0

lucaspottersky··on To Break Google’s Monopoly on Search, Make Its Index Public
I disagree. To break the Monopoly a new & innovative way to search needs to rise, not just a clone or "Google wanna be" like Bing/DuckDuckGo etc.

So, somebody gotta do what Google did 20 years ago.

lucaspottersky··on To Break Google’s Monopoly on Search, Make Its Index Public
bad engine though (last time i checked was ~3 years ago)
lucaspottersky··on I was wrong about spreadsheets (2017)
my browser was really delighted to download the 4MB illustrative cover art.
lucaspottersky··on Hostyoself: Server in a browser – host from your computer, your phone, etc.
> What inspired this? beaker browser, ngrok, localhost.run, inlets.dev, Parks and Recreation.
lucaspottersky··on Hostyoself: Server in a browser – host from your computer, your phone, etc.
> Using these technologies instead of OP centralized proposition would improve reliability, scalability

i think i'll have to agree. getting 502 here.

lucaspottersky··on Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter
thats actually a very annoying feature that has thrown me off when i tried.

you can't even comment out your code while debugging. annoying as hell.

lucaspottersky··on Let’s Encrypt to transition to ISRG root
thanks! i was amazed how this information is buried and how they assume everyone should know what ISRG means.
lucaspottersky··on It seems that Google is forgetting the old web
Google is the new Yahoo.
lucaspottersky··on Reducing notification permission prompt spam in Firefox
Those omnipresent dialogs are a cancer on the web. It was the worst idea ever.

I actually can't believe the browser vendors made basically the same mistake as the obnoxious JS "alert()"

lucaspottersky··on Google has added DuckDuckGo as a search engine option for Chrome users
that means DuckDuckGo is harmless to them, no real competition there.

just like Apple lets Pandora on Apple Watch and not Spotify.

lucaspottersky··on Google+ for consumers will shut down on April 2nd
of course it does.

when they decided to shut it down it was because they wanted to channel Readers users to Google+

lucaspottersky··on Scanning books at 250 pages a minute (2008)
pretty cool. I'd improve the design by adding a foot lever and footswitch for taking the photo in order to reduce the back and forward hand motion
