lta··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
I didn't know about the fines and can't find a lot of details online. It seems meta got fined for something else, but it was about 1B, which is less than 1% of their revenue.

I think the smaller companies or individual which did stuff like that got their life ruined. The pirate bay admin got fined multiple millions of dollars.

So if I agree it's not a "free pass", it's still a cheap pass many others didn't get. Makes me realize how, as mentioned by other comments, copyright laws are a tool for the powerful to oppress others rather than an actual universal right.

I do agree, but I still feel angry to see how it's playing out on this specific topic
lta··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
I don't think it's about becoming copyright zealot. What angers me in there is the blatant inequality. People are in jail or got heavy fines for opening torrent or steaming sites. But "Open"AI and others got a free pass because they're big corps.
lta··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
As mentioned in the article, we heavy in Europe a good source of shade that's rather self sustaining and even helps replace the concrete lining of the canals. It's a wonderful technology called trees
lta··on Bonsai 2 27B: Near-Lossless Compression in a 9x Smaller Footprint
I'm doing the same with a context of about 128-150k Surprisingly, I get subjectively better results with Unsloth's 3 bit quants (UD-Q3-XL something), than their 4 bit quants (S or M)
lta··on I sent Google proof of a bot farm. They called it "normal user behavior."
That's going to create a lot less trouble the next time they have to do a round of layoffs to increase efficiency or whatever fancy BS they'll invent next time ^-^
lta··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
The joy of a world with a duopoly reigning over a strategic core market We're really into the South Park cliché: Anal douche or Shit Sandwich.

I wish regulators across the world did something about this, but even Europe shy attempts aren't moving the market in a better direction.

It's depressing to see a company that thrived from the open internet becoming such an evil piece of cyberpunk lore. I mean... Nobody really expected Apple to care about anything else than its bottom line. But I'm not alone to have had hopes about Google.

When I die, I think not fighting Google when it was still time will be one of the regrets I'll drag into my grave.

lta··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
Thank you for posting this <3. I've been thinking it daily for about a year and feel a little bit less alone.

I understand this is a significant topic in the industry but the ratio is really high. Every time someone at OpenAI or Anthropic farts, there's top 10 post.

It makes me feel as if a lot of hackers had given up on actual hacking to just be followers of the latest commercial stuff thrown on the market. It's likely a projection of my own fears, but I have not been able to shake it off and it's gotten worse and worse.

Would you mind elaborating a bit on your process ? Or share a few relevant exchanges, I've no clue how to start having this discussion.

That would make a great blog post

lta··on Degraded performance for multiple models
Nobody forced you to sell your soul. You made a pact with the devil. We all know how this ends up
lta··on Qwen 3.8 27B is excellent, but it defaults to overthinking things
While I was reading the top level message I was thinking on something wrong those lines. That being said I think it's somewhat useful to be able to see the reasoning in a meaningful format. There's already enough hidden layers of unfathomable meaning.

What if instead of a latent they used at a shorter form of note-taking-like reasoning, using more symbol to achieve a denser CoT. We'd get the best of both worlds. WDYT ?

lta··on Qwen 3.8 27B
I've been experimenting with a few settings in my 4090 , and if 3.6 run at 90-110 tps, 3.8 staya below 80 tps and it's most often at 60 tps. I'm using flash attention, mtp speculative decoding (n=2). I've looked at the club-3090 repo, but haven't found anything meaningful but get back to 3.6 performance

How is this relevant ? We're talking about open source analytics, and this looks like a shameless plus
lta··on Grok 4.5
I'm genuinely flabbergasted to read this here.

There's no possible comparison between Musk and Mamdani's gestures, at least from the perspective of someone who grew up in a region occupied by the Nazis during the war and had him grand parents deported.

Regarding EU politician support, it's really not what you describe. The politicians he's been supporting are the ones in the rightmost spectrum of the political chessboard in each case I've witnessed. There isn't a car I've witnessed where he supported someone center right, or left.

These false equivalences are dangerous.

I'm sorely disappointed by gitlab, I was hoping they would be a safe harbor against this whole AI bullshit typhoon.

lta··on Ask HN: Who is using OpenClaw?
I wanted to try it recently and went to their doc website. Ar first glance it looked surprisingly detailed for such a young project but why not.

I didn't wanted to run a random, possibility vibe coded tool on my computer right away so I decided to run it in a container. That's an option, great ! Tu run it with docker they recommended an install script.

Out of habit I downloaded the script and started skimming through it to figure roughly what it would do to my machine.

The stuff was a mess. Most of it seemed overcomplicated code to do simple thing. Then I ran into inline python code in the shell script. That's not super elegant but there are some valid use cases, why not. Then there was inline JS code... WTF? Then we're back in inline python.

Seriously, that's just a script to run a docker compose file ! We're not yet at setting up providers or anything.

I was not to run that script on my computer, and was happy I decided to go the container way.

I got back to the website to see if they have manual instructions... They did, maybe there's hope after all ? Those instructions ended up being incomplete or broken, even for someone who does devops-y stuff on a daily basis.

I decided to drop the experiment there and it left me with the impression of a pile of code thrown together by an army of monkeys.

lta··on EFF is leaving X
I hear what you're saying and it's very insightful. But I'm under the impression the libertarians have moved a lot closer to fascism I'm the recent years so it's hard to keep them in any tent. The "society has become more polarized" is an euphemism to describe an important rise of fascism across the world and in the US (that I'm not a citizen of). Yes it's polarized, because there's a side that's trying to create a political police and camps to deport everyone they disagree with as "illegal immigrants".

Circling back to EFF, I have seen many important legal issue related to digital freedom that I thought was important where they were involved. I think they're serving their mission. This decision makes sense, it's just a little bit late

lta··on EFF is leaving X
I've been scrolling for a while and this is the first contact that makes sense to me. Ok, zuck has gone dark, yes tiktok governance and objectives are unclear. None of those companies are clean.

But Musk is actively *evil* and using this company specifically to serve his dark narrative and agenda. Thank EFF for quitting, was about time

lta··on EFF is leaving X
That's just a drop compared to the ocean compared to this one time when he performed multiple nazi salute in front of an entire country, or when he single handedly decided to intervene in a foreign war via Star link control or when he messed with entire branches of the American government
