lsllc··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 incident on June 27, 2024
Same here, except with a EdgeRouter (Ubiquiti) DNS caching.
lsllc··on SCIM: Ncurses based, Vim-like spreadsheet
Hmmm:

The files /Applications/Microsoft and /Users/lsllc/Excel.app do not exist.
Missing a backslash! [0] ... how quaintly Microsoft!

lsllc··on Judge delays ban on noncompete agreements for employees
No, not at all! The headline and case is strange!
lsllc··on Big slowdown in hiring here? June U.S. jobs report not showing it
Well, while you might find it harder to find work, know this -- I'd take a single experienced engineer over 10 inexperienced ones any day of the week (of course, you have to actually be an experienced engineer/manager vs some Boeing-wannabe MBA to actually know this!).
lsllc··on Federal judge partially blocks U.S. ban on noncompetes

lsllc··on Judge delays ban on noncompete agreements for employees
Yes, I added a comment as CNN seemed to update the story + headline to indicate that as you say, the injunction is quite specific to the plaintiffs.
lsllc··on Judge delays ban on noncompete agreements for employees
More information (CNN updated the story):

> Wednesday’s order limits the preliminary injunction to just the plaintiff (Ryan LLC) and the plaintiffs-intervenors, which are the US Chamber of Commerce, the Business Roundtable, the Texas Association of Business and the Longview Chamber of Commerce. However, it doesn’t extend to the member companies of those groups. “[T]he Court declines to extend injunctive relief to members of Plaintiff-Intervenors,” the judge wrote.

> Even though the court indicates that it believes the FTC lacks the rulemaking authority to issue a noncompete ban, the judge declined to issue a nationwide ban for now, Coleman said.

NOTE: I am unable to edit the caption, to reflect the updated CNN headline, @dang?

lsllc··on Sublime Merge
I haven't looked at package control in a while, I'll take a look! Thanks
lsllc··on Sublime Merge
Long time Sublime user, both Sublime Text and Sublime Merge. I started back with ST2, ST3 and I have ST4 and have use Merge since it was released. These days I now mostly use nvim+lazyvim for coding but I do continue to use Sublime Merge as my primary git environment.

@ben-schaaf I'd love to see tree-sitter+LSP come to Sublime Text, as well as telescope+rg+fzf style fuzzy search. I find the lazyvim+telescope integration for finding files, finding buffers, looking for symbol references and general grepping with the live preview just fantastic.

One of the things I don't like about nvim+lazyvim is that I miss the IDE (workspace) aspect of ST, in that I have a window open per active project in Sublime. I use Neovide for nvim, but it really only lets you have one GUI window (I don't like to use Kitty/terminal windows for nvim because I can't cycle easily through them without mixing through other terminal stuff).

lsllc··on Open source 'Eclipse Theia IDE' exits beta to challenge Visual Studio Code
For me at least, tree-sitter + LSP support is a must in any editor/IDE. Recent entrants like Zed are setting a very high bar along with really quite stellar updates to neovim and emacs in the form of LazyVim, Doom/Spacemacs etc.

Glad to see more competition in the space.

lsllc··on Small claims court became Meta's customer service hotline
Same here, but now it seems no-one implements 0 in automated phone systems anymore!
lsllc··on Donald Sutherland has died
I think "The Eagle Has Landed" is my all time favorite Donald Sutherland movie.

lsllc··on Agricultural drones are transforming rice farming in the Mekong River delta
Glad to see human ingenuity at work here! Pictures in TFA remind me of scenes from the movie The Creator.
lsllc··on Massachusetts officials dealing with statewide 911 system outage
Services restored after about 2 hrs? Will be interesting to read the RCA for this.
lsllc··on ASCII Silhouettify
There's going to be a lot of editing to /etc/motd and/or /etc/issue today!
lsllc··on YouTube is A/B testing limiting logged out access to videos
If you look here [0], it seems that they've stopped fighting [or lost] the ad-blocker arms-race, so that's something at least!

lsllc··on TTE: Terminal Text Effects
Even at 19200 baud?
lsllc··on How many EV charging stations does the US need to replace gas stations?
Yes, it'd create a multi-path circuit causing the trip.

This (multi-path circuits) is not uncommon when homeowners try to wire up a smart switch requiring a neutral to a switch-circuit without a neutral (as most light switches actually only need to switch the hot) and so they "borrow" a convenient neutral from a neighboring circuit which causes it to immediately trip!

lsllc··on Helix-gpui: A simple GUI for the Helix editor
+1 for Zed [running in vim mode]. It has best-in-class tree-sitter and LSP support (not unsurprising since Max Brunsfeld of tree-sitter fame is one of the founders).
lsllc··on Helix-gpui: A simple GUI for the Helix editor
Have you looked at Neovide? It's very similar to this, a cross-platform Rust based GUI front end for neovim. Neovide is really quite nice; it's beautifully rendered.

https://neovide.dev

My primary use case for Neovide (vs neovim running in Wezterm/kitty/Alacritty) is simply so I can Alt/Cmd-TAB to it quickly as I usually run with many terminal windows open and it's somewhat of a chore to locate the one with nvim in it, whereas with Neovide I have a separate app with an icon in the dock/sysmenu to switch to.

lsllc··on Electric Small Heat Pump
You can get a DIY Mr Cool Mini-split (12K BTU) on Amazon for less than $1800.

The whole no-bathroom thing likely won't work well in a cold climate because the pipes in the walls/floor would freeze.

lsllc··on Billions in Dirty Money Flies Under the Radar at Busiest Airports
You got really lucky! In MA possession of ammunition without a (MA issued) permit is a crime with up to 2 years in jail.

MA doesn't have ANY reciprocity with other states regarding your CCW and the City of Boston in particular has a ban on any high-capacity (>10 rounds) magazines of ANY sort/age. MA banned hi-capacity mags but only ones made after 1994, pre-ban ones are ok, just not in Boston (and I think a few other towns).

You are right about peaceable journey, but I would not risk any of my liberty or rights on the good nature of a LEO in such a state.

Anyone have any DSLR settings recommendations? (newbie here, Canon EOS R5).

Located North Eastern US, just about approaching dusk. Fingers crossed!

lsllc··on Superfile – A fancy, pretty terminal file manager
Yes, I had the same question! (`spf` for the curious!)

EDIT: To be fair, right at the beginning of the tutorial is:

> First, if you want to open superfile by opening a terminal and typing spf.

lsllc··on Attackers can decloak routing-based VPNs
Interesting write up! I typically use multiple-WLANs as well as guest-isolation on the "guest" network which further reduces the attack surface. All of the network infra also runs on a separate management VLAN and (by default) switch ports are on the guest network so if someone randomly plugs in to a ethernet jack, they're not getting on the MGMT lan. Maybe not perfect, but certainly better than your average Comcast/Verizon/Orange/SFR setup!
lsllc··on Attackers can decloak routing-based VPNs
Many networking switches/systems (e.g. UniFi from Ubiquiti) let you enable DHCP Snooping which drops Layer 2 traffic from rogue DHCP servers to prevent this:

lsllc··on The $1 MICROCONTROLLER (comparison of cheap microcontrollers) (2017)
Needs a “(2017)” suffix, but otherwise a great article.
lsllc··on Zed Decoded: Rope and SumTree
I tried Zed a while ago, not long after they first launched. It was pretty interesting (gpu+rust+tree-sitter+lsp), but not enough to draw me from neovim. After they went open source (and launched extensions!) I looked at it again and actually I'm really impressed with the progress (incl. vim keybindings ftw!).

I'm at the point of using it for some new projects and continuing with neovim for my existing ones -- there's a lot of community input e.g. nvim-surround functionality was just added. I think at this point it does everything that I have in my (somewhat minimal) nvim config (and much of that is tree-sitter/LSP).

The one big feature I'm interested in is dap support so I can finally give up on gdb cli.
