lscotte··on When Amazon Switched from Sun to Linux
I don't know but agree it's unreadable and terrible, so I don't bother to read them.
lscotte··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
Indeed, I agree with all this.

The trick is finding a balance, as a friend once told me the sweet spot is "as little process as possible, as much process as necessary".

lscotte··on The account of realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours
The comparison to Black Lives Matter rioting is important. I find it very bizarre that the media correctly calls these idiots rioters, but they call the Black Lives Matter idiots doing the same sort of thing protestors.
lscotte··on Show HN: I built the antithesis of Zoom. Add GIFs, stickers, BGs. Talk like IRL
Same for me. Other than an ASCII smiley here or there, if I can't say it with simple text as a complete sentence, I don't say it, and video chat backgrounds are annoying.
lscotte··on The Mayron Cole Piano Method is now free
I tried a few of these apps but I wasn't really learning anything. Eventually, I found pianote.com and I couldn't be more happy - it's worth checking out as another option for online piano learning (they also have drum and guitar programs).

I agree not to buy an expensive piano (or keyboard). While a fully weighted 88-key instrument is definitely ideal, you can get by just fine on a semi, or even el-cheapo, 61-key keyboard.

lscotte··on Oracle Moving HQ to Austin
This is not correct. I work for a CA based company. I work from home in a different state which is my legal residence. I do not file or pay CA taxes.
lscotte··on System76 – Pangolin
It's still 2020 and actually I find 1920x1080 to be plenty sufficient in a 15" laptop.
lscotte··on YouTube-dl's repository has been restored
Actually it seems more like the EFF had nothing to do with it at all and the unit test patch is the reason it was restored - just like Github says in the blog entry.
lscotte··on How to revert HP printer’s ban on 3rd-party ink cartridges
It's available on Android too.
lscotte··on How to revert HP printer’s ban on 3rd-party ink cartridges
I've found cheap Chinese replacement cartridges on Amazon for my Brother color laser that come with the chip. Not that it's hard to move the chip over, but the price was the same as ones without the chip. Hopefully firmware updates won't break these working.
lscotte··on The battle for the soul of digital freedom taking place inside your printer
My Brother color laser is running the latest firmware and works just fine with knockoff Chinese toner carts that cost about 1/4 what Brother charges.
lscotte··on HP Instant Ink is “ink as a service”
Which is why I buy the Chinese cartridges from Amazon that are 1/4 the price and work just as well.
lscotte··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
Exactly. Don't use an open ended license and then complain about it. If you want to restrict use, then license it appropriately. Very simple and obvious.
lscotte··on Cups Printing System Open-Source Development Has Seemingly Dried Up
Of course it has, now that Apple owns it. Open source is not consistent with Apple's culture.
lscotte··on Actionsflow – IFTTT/Zapier free alternative based on GitHub Actions
Never used Zapier, but IFTTT is too simple to really be useful as you can't do much with it. I had a few actions, but not after they announced it's not really free anymore.
lscotte··on DM41x: a modern take on the HP-41CX
I've used RealCalc for a few years. I paid a few bucks for the "plus" version. It hasn't been updated in years, but that's fine with me because it just plain works.
lscotte··on Apple to let Facebook online events temporarily avoid 30% cut
Yes. Forcing a company to use in-app purchases, rather than their own subscription model (for example), just so the app store can get a cut is wrong.
lscotte··on Total number of Brave Browser Publishers
I switched from Firefox to Brave about 5 weeks ago, after Firefox released the new Android version that is unusable. I don't want to use different browsers on different platforms - I want my Linux, Windows, and Android all the same browser and synced. So far it's been great. I looked at the cross-platform alternatives, but wasn't happy (Vivaldi on desktop UI is very clunky, for example). I don't even care about BAT or Brave Rewards, the basic Chromium based Brave browser is solid.
lscotte··on Microsoft's underwater data centre resurfaces after two years
"All of Orkney's electricity comes from wind and solar power"
lscotte··on App Review process updates
You have to remember that in the Apple reality distortion field there is only Apple. I think you get thrown out of the cult if you acknowledge other things exist.
lscotte··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
Simple - just stop doing work. It's literally as simple as that.
lscotte··on Ask HN: Has anyone migrated off containerized infrastructure?
You just presented a list of the benefits of containerized infrastructure.
lscotte··on In Praise of ZFS on Linux's ZED 'ZFS Event Daemon'
Yes, you can. It's called L2ARC.
lscotte··on Hardware fix for Dell “AC power adapter could not be determined”
It starts out being Dell then switches to HP? Something funky about that article.
lscotte··on Classic Calculator Was Reverse Engineered from the Bare Metal
You are correct regarding the formatting, but there is "." key.
lscotte··on Fixing Ellis Island's borders in the face of incorrect government data
I do search and rescue, and it is amazing how out of date the USFS maps are. The "2016" revision shows roads that haven`t existed in decades. Even the MVUM map is wrong in similar ways, and it`s supposed to be the source of truth.
lscotte··on Story of the Roku Player (2013)
There's not a single ad on my Roku, other than ad supported content.
lscotte··on I am mesmerized by our new robotic vacuum (2019)
Absolutely. I've had both and the Neato is much better than the Roomba. The way I look at it - it's as if the Roomba was designed by students that just took a class on chaos theory and watched Jurassic Park, where the Neato was designed by actual engineers. The Roomba is fun to watch bounce around randomly. The Neato just vacuums the carpet in a logical algorithm, the same way a human would, more or less.
lscotte··on Antarctic Snow Cruiser
Not for me, subscription only site.
lscotte··on Antarctic Snow Cruiser
Modern tread blocks are designed to eject mud and snow. Back then though...
