Nicer for you, but maybe not for the oncoming traffic

ls15··on Don't use Tailwind for a design system (2021)
> @apply is the directive that Tailwind recommend to extract repeated utility patterns. Since it's a static definition, you would only abstract those lists into a CSS file. I don't want to get into much details about it, but it does not solve the problems mentioned before.

I would like to know why @apply does not solve the issues in the author's opinion. This is exactly the part where the author should have gone into details.

ls15··on South Africa plans to legalize sex work in a bid to tackle crime and HIV
Uranium is everywhere, but I'd probably be uncomfortable too if my neighbour had plutonium at home.

I think there is a middle ground. The bar for prohibiting things should just not be too low and I feel that it has been pushed lower and lower to crazy mom levels over the last couple of decades. It is time for the pendulum to swing into the other direction in my opinion.

People seem to realize now that banning things has negative side effects and can enable criminals.

ls15··on Ask HN: Developers, how do you deal with socials, blogging, etc
> or just go with the flow

How does one do this with social media?

Half-ass some tweets and blog posts until people stop asking?

Or try to write the smartest tweet ever and spend 12 paid hours on refining the wording?

ls15··on The number of banks willing to do business with the crypto industry is shrinking
You'd need to find people/businesses who are willing to accept crypto in exchange for goods or services, and if that is not an option, you'd need to exchange crypto for local (or another accepted) currency.

If your government tries to stop you from doing that, it is of course much harder, but not impossible, since decentralized exchanges such as Bisq would be an option, as well as LocalMonero or regular old black markets, assuming that you have coins that someone is willing to pay for.

ls15··on The number of banks willing to do business with the crypto industry is shrinking
If your government decides to kill the internet, I think that's a very good reason to try to emigrate. The fact that China is doing it, may make them look powerful, but it also makes them look tyrannical.

The Cypriots who preferred to store their cash in their pillow did not get the haircut though.
ls15··on The number of banks willing to do business with the crypto industry is shrinking
That's not the point. Everyone knows that crypto is full of scams and everyone tells you that you are supposed to hold your own keys instead of leaving coins on an exchange. Almost nobody tells you that keeping coins on an exchange is good practice.

> EU

In 2013 the government of Cyprus decided to seize money directly from people's bank accounts. I would not call that stable.

> China

In 2022, when some Chinese banks decided to freeze depositors accounts for shady reasons and debitors planned to protest the issue, authorities used Covid codes to block them from accessing the banks. That also does not seem stable to me.

ls15··on Ask HN: What supplements do you take that have good scientific backing?
> glucosamine/chondroitin

Since I started msm/glucosamine/chondroitin on and off, I think I've only experienced no or very mild muscle soreness after activity. It also seems to kick in very quickly.

I also like boswellia serrata extracts for their anti-inflammatory properties, since they are potent and don't give me any unwanted side-effects.

ls15··on Ask HN: What supplements do you take that have good scientific backing?
5000 IU drops based on vegetable oil.

X drops for X * 5000 IU.

ls15··on Ask HN: How do you install not the latest iOS version?
Yes, physical things degrade over time, but they don't just vanish without a warning when you update your phone.

Also, my grandparents had their rings until they died, my vinyl records from the 70ies play just fine and I have books from the 1950s that I would not deem outdated. The skillet will last for centuries maybe.

On the other hand, some of my favorite apps just stopped working without any warning after using them for three or four years, just because I updated my iPad. In one case I lost some of my work, because I could not open the file format anymore.

ls15··on Ask HN: How do you install not the latest iOS version?
How long is a book that you bought supposed to last until the license expires and you have to buy it again?

How long is a vinyl record that you bought supposed to last until the license expires and you have to buy it again?

How long is a wedding ring supposed to last until it needs to be replaced?

How long is my cast iron skillet supposed to work until it falls apart and I have to buy a new one?

ls15··on Ask HN: How do you install not the latest iOS version?
Many developers care enough to create an updated version ("v2") that users have to buy in order to use the app again.
ls15··on Portugal’s digital nomad bubble
Public offices love to slap fines for being late on people. I think people should be entitled to the same fees if the offices are late.
ls15··on Portugal’s digital nomad bubble
Actionable advice: eliminate this step in the buraucracy that does not serve a purpose. When can I expect implementation of my idea?
ls15··on Portugal’s digital nomad bubble
What's wrong with complaining about sprawling bureaucracy? I can only see downsides and no upsides. Don't you want it to be eliminated? I think people are not yet complaining enough.
ls15··on Jailbroken iOS can't run macOS apps – I spent a week to find out why (2021)
Because there are things that only work on an iPad, such as accessing the high quality touch-enabled audio/music apps that only run on iOS. Most app makers simply don't create them for Android.

I think it is an awesome product, but that does not mean that I am against Apple being forced to open up their walled garden. Voting with my wallet does not always help.

ls15··on German Bundestag Passes Whistleblower Protection Act
Maybe... they haven't told me. I am also not sure if the EU is running large scale wiretapping operations in the U.S. and I think that the U.S. would react in a drastic way if they learned about it - as opposed to the EU.

What I do know: U.S. citizens are protected by GDPR when they are in the EU.

ls15··on Ask HN: Why did Frontend development explode in complexity?
And companies that specifically are looking for <INSERT_FRAMEWORK> developers
ls15··on German Bundestag Passes Whistleblower Protection Act
That the U.S. selfishly sees non-Americans as unprotected game is nothing that the EU has to respect.
ls15··on Ask HN: Why did Frontend development explode in complexity?
Ok, but why aren't companies then firing all frontend developers and instead let backend developers build logic frontends with vanilla HTML/JS/CSS?
ls15··on German Bundestag Passes Whistleblower Protection Act
So Snowden could seek asylum in the EU, since he exposed espionage that was targeting the EU (and others)?

I have to say that I've lost yet another bit of respect for the German government (and those that followed) when they did not offer asylum to Snowden.

ls15··on Confirmed Covid-19 deaths per million vs. GDP per capita, Jan 1, 2023
Confirmed by the authorities of the respective countries, as opposed to confirmed by independent researchers, which I guess is impossible to do.
