They're not great for anything that might produce heat. Seeing a MOSFET slowly starting to imitate the Tower of Pisa after dissipating a measly 1 W for a few moments was a sight to behold.

For about two seconds before I cut the power.

Perhaps more inspired by the INTERCAL's PLEASE.
lrasinen··on Brunost: The Nynorsk Programming Language
One of these years I'm going to make a Finnish programming language that enforces the correct case in arguments. And I don't mean silly arguments like camelCase vs kebab-case, I mean grammar.

Some examples to illustrate:

  tiedosto on "foo.txt" avattuna
  tulostin on PRN1
  kirjoita(tiedostoon, "a")
  kirjoita(tulostimelle, "b")
Job security for DECADES.

This is the kind of quality response that makes HN great.

lrasinen··on German men 18-45 need military permit for extended stays abroad
If there were one. The closest thing is the Treaty of Lisbon, which in turn was an update on the Treaties of Maastricht and Rome.

However, the matter has been heard in the European Court of Justice in 2002, and the short version is "Community law does not preclude compulsory military service being reserved to men."

For more details, feel free to study the legal opinion behind the ruling: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CEL...

lrasinen··on German men 18-45 need military permit for extended stays abroad
Humbug. Defence policy, especially how the EU member states choose to organize their military forces, is very much in the hands of the individual countries. A majority of the member states don't even have conscription anymore.

Yes, there is the common security and defence policy, and the Article 42 of Lisbon and all that, but it all still relies on national systems.

lrasinen··on Pass-Through of Tariffs: Evidence from European Wine Imports
Most of economics is educated guessing, and having more data (hopefully) leads to better guesses.

With this study there's plenty of leads to follow. Does the ABV have an impact? What about the base price? France vs Italy?

lrasinen··on Pass-Through of Tariffs: Evidence from European Wine Imports
Goldman speaks of the current tariff regime; the study here looked at 2019-21 wine tariffs.

Also the tax burden will fall on different places depending on the markets and the good in question.

lrasinen··on Story of XZ Backdoor [video]
I couldn't let this be, so I went through the commits and as far as I can tell, that's the case. The committer/author names and timestamps are consistent with using --author on a commit (... or in a few cases, --amend --author).

Except one: commit 3d1fdddf9 has Jia Tan as both author and committer but the author timestamp is in +0300 while the commit timestamp is +0800.

lrasinen··on Story of XZ Backdoor [video]
UTC+2 isn't very convincing as an argument for Russia. Only the Kaliningrad exclave uses that timezone, and if I were in a state-backed group, I'd live in one of the big cities.

Also quick search suggested UTC+3 was seen during the summer, and Russia doesn't do DST either.

Edit: some of the UTC+2/3 times are attributable to being differences in git committer and author dates (e.g. email patches)

Way more than a foot, but that's the general idea.

There's a soil remediation project near my workplace (former railway depot). They've dug up several meters deep by now.

lrasinen··on 'Three norths' alignment about to end
For most of Great Britain, the grid north differs from true north because the grid cells are fixed size, so they "fan out" compared to longitude lines. The exception is the 2°W meridian where the grid lines up.

The magnetic north wanders around, and it now happens to match along the 2° meridian.

But really the article is a year early, as the alignment point should make a brief landfall in Scotland late next year (which the article acknowledges later on). Or perhaps they expect Scotland to secede before that.

lrasinen··on Interstellar Object 3I/Atlas Passed Mars Last Night
It's Juice (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer) and it's not yet anywhere near Jupiter. Its trajectory has a few slingshot loops around Venus and Earth, and it's just coming off the Venus encounter.

It's about 0.43 AU from the comet at its nearest, whereas Earth will be pretty much on the opposite side of the Sun, making observations difficult from here.

Edit: Earth, Mars and Jupiter are in roughly 120 degrees from each other as seen from the Sun, with the Earth-Sun-Jupiter angle closing up fast and the E-S-M angle growing slightly slower. In about two months the E-S-M angle will be 180.

lrasinen··on Why English doesn't use accents
Wikipedia lists both "cat" and the Finnish "mäki" under æ: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-open_front_unrounded_vo...

Do you have some example words that would show the difference?

lrasinen··on Why English doesn't use accents
Do you have any examples? As a Finnish speaker the Swedish "a" sounds the same. "Pappa", "framtiden" etc.

It's "ä" and "e" which have swapped uses, but it's not exactly consistent (e.g. "Järnvägstorget" where first ä is close to the Finnish ä, second ä is closer to e but so is the e at the end)

lrasinen··on Finland warms up the world's largest sand battery, the economics look appealing
I took the electricity spot prices for the first three months of this year (so that it covers the cold period), and ran a simple simulation on it.

The simulation model assumes we're charging during the 12 cheapest hours, and discharging during the most expensive 12 h, and then calculated the average price differential per day. This is of course suboptimal, since the day-ahead prices are available.

The mean differential in the data is 56.5 €/MWh, and on 64% of the days the differential is over 22.8 €/MWh. 10%, 50% and 90% percentiles are 3, 54 and 119.

So at least during the winter time (when consumption is greatest) you'd expect to hit the price goal more often than not.

Adding the rest of the year up to now drops the mean to 52 €/MWh and the median down to 38 €/MWh. Still pretty good.

(As for cherry-picking the data: this year was easily available and didn't dig too hard for older data, but it was one of the mildest winters in recent years.)

lrasinen··on Finland warms up the world's largest sand battery, the economics look appealing
22.8 €/MWh is just 2.28 c/kWh and that's a very low bar to clear.

Just yesterday we had 6 hours of negative prices, followed shortly after by one hour at 2.66 c/kWh and four more over 3 c. Friday had swings from 0.4 c to 13 c.

(All prices with VAT included)

And this is in summer when energy consumption is low, the swings will intensify when the heating season starts.

lrasinen··on Sleep apnea pill shows striking success in large clinical trial
My preferred method (Resmed Mirage FX) is to put the mask on, but without the hose connected. Then turn the machine on, wait until I can hear the air whooshing out of the hose and then clip the hose to the mask.

... but also as @elric has said, getting it set up properly is important. The first few weeks it felt restrictive, I complained and the hospital cranked up the initial pressure from 4 units to 6 units, and it's been great ever since.

lrasinen··on The metre originated in the French Revolution
I usually go with 240 ml if scaling down and there are fractions involved for slightly cleaner numbers.

Another "close enough" value is the binary inch of 25.6 mm. Makes dealing with /32s and /64s oh so much easier.

lrasinen··on The metre originated in the French Revolution
It's the other end of the scale that's very relevant in northern latitudes (Celsius was Swedish, after all). Negative temperatures => it's freezing.

lrasinen··on Soldering the Tek way
I once forgot to turn off the iron after soldering, and didn't have auto power-off.

Ended up reviving the tip with very careful application of 600 grit sandpaper. Not as good as new, but got at least a few years of use on it.

lrasinen··on Soldering the Tek way
I'm a fan of the SnCuNiGe alloys. I've got a roll of Felder Sn100Ni+ and the feel is quite close to lead tin. Of course you need more heat, I've found 340 °C best on my iron.

You do NOT fuck with the safety system.

Sure, it's not the mission critical safety system and you're only reading it, so what's the harm? Well, one of these days someone doing that is going to typo == into a =, or whatever the PLC version of one-character oopsie is.

lrasinen··on Undersea power cable linking Finland and Estonia suffers damage
From the press briefing: the ship Eagle S was stopped and found to be dragging its anchor.

Or rather the chain; when the chain was raised there anchor was missing.

Coast Guard and Police are on board.

The current prime suspect is flagged in Cook Islands and registered owner is in UAE. Currently anchored off Finnish coast with a Coast Guard escort.

True, there was a Chinese ship nearby but its path crossed the cable several minutes earlier.
