lrae··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
> GP says its $105 in the EU

It's not? Maybe there is some dynamic pricing going on, but it's 79 Euro (~91.75 USD). Which would be close to the US price with Hungary's VAT (27%, which is I think the highest). Then add stuff like copying levy onto it and you'll land on roughly the same price, even with a lower average VAT. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_copying_levy

Maybe they compared the model with the base to the one without? The one with base is more expensive in the US too though.

lrae··on Grok 4.6
So Grok 4.6 is incredibly expensive in that comparison? It's double the cost of Sol 5.6 Low and still nearly double of the cost of 5.6 Medium (which scores +6% over Grok).

You mean Chat Control 1.0 that was already in place from 2021 to April 2026 and allows for voluntary scanning for CSAM in unecrypted data through hash-matching for existing and indexed CSAM material?

Is it available now? Still seems to be a waitlist?

lrae··on Discovery Loop
You could rephrase that again I guess:

"The team of AI pioneers lacks the basic prompt-writing capability to make their marketing landing page not look like AI slop."

I, personally, don't hate it. It's a decently clean site, but it does invoke those thoughts in me too.

lrae··on DEF CON bans Meta-style 'pervert glasses'
I think they're all still without a camera. It's just an optional, detachable add-on for, e.g. the 1S. (Which is nice.)

But yes, they are bulky.

lrae··on DEF CON bans Meta-style 'pervert glasses'
XREAL, RayNeo and there is at least one more brand that exists. You could use those for that already - though they're probably not perfect yet for that specific use case.

But they will come and will get better. Apple is also supposedly still working on some and they'll likely try to get rid of the "camera issue". Or maybe they'll try to make it the new normal. But they already exist and there will be more of them in the future - with and without cameras.

lrae··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
They are, they still scratch though (just google e.g. Fenix 7 Sapphire scratches). It's also not on all models. I guess part of it is also just layers on top of it scratching and not the sapphire itself.

But, Apple Watch Ultras and also Titanium models since Series 6? ship with Sapphire crystal too.

lrae··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
Same. Both have plenty of scratches here.

I also don't see why an Apple Watch wouldn't survive all those mentioned things. Pretty sure I did all those things with an Apple Watch on, except for the specific 108 mile gravel race. But I don't see why it would fail that.

And both might absolutely scratch while climbing, and if you're unlucky and hit it in the wrong spot, also crack.

That said, if I were an athlete in any of those categories and did it all the time, I'd still absolutely choose a Garmin.

lrae··on Una GPS smart watch – Repairable, USB-C charging, developer-friendly
Some good points were already brought up in the comments (IP5X, USB C charging), but I have the feeling that it's also just not a good fitness tracker/smartwatch.

I see a single unboxing of the watch from three weeks ago on Youtube and zero reviews on YT or websites. Just posts based on their PR release that it's available now. (Though some clearly already shipped.)

Thus, it's unfortunately very likely that the product is also not good at its main purpose, tracking activities, workouts and health. If it would only even come somewhat close to the performance of all the competitor smartwatches/trackers, they'd be louder about that part.

lrae··on London Gatwick has launched a robotic airport parking service
TIL you can just look up vehicle information via number plate in the UK.

Possible I guess, but what if you don't have UK plates?

lrae··on London Gatwick has launched a robotic airport parking service
> Maximum weight: 2.6 tonnes

Wonder what the actual limit is and what happens when you're above it (and the other max. dimensions)? Couple of EVs out there that are heavier than 2.6 tonnes now. (Volvo EX90, Mercedes EQS, BMW iX, Ioniq 9, Rivians (not yet in the UK), ... and many more right around that weight.)

Is it getting measured in the cabin and declines you?

lrae··on Europe's Largest Unions Demand Right to Cancel Work on Days Above 30C
What makes you think that this isn't happening?

China ramps up production & shipping to Europe [1] and a quick glance at Google Trends for Germany, UK and France AC install searches are up 5x from last year, and last year was already double or more of the previous years.

lrae··on Europe's Largest Unions Demand Right to Cancel Work on Days Above 30C
Not sure about the rioting part, maybe in some places on earth, but I'd say the burden of additional childcare is obviously an issue. So is just missing those hours of education.

Which is why perhaps classes should not be suspended in most and less extreme cases, but rather adjusted. And good teachers are already doing that. (And long-term, AC has to be a thing.)

> Unions want enforceable workplace thermal limits, based on the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT)

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jul/08/unions-e...

The submission just doesn't include it, but that seems to be the goal to apply that concept :)

lrae··on Europe's Largest Unions Demand Right to Cancel Work on Days Above 30C
(Slightly) better article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jul/08/unions-e...

OP's submission seems very UK / TUC centric, also doesn't include something many here are bringing up, that they indeed plan to base it on the wet bulb temperature.

lrae··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
Yes.

Chat Control 2.0 was the big one in those regards.

(Also, LOL @ Skype mention.)

lrae··on Chatto is now open source
Yes, at least with the 2.0 version (which is the "really bad one"), on-device scanning would be the big issue. But then it also doesn't matter where you're hosted, unless you only allow users with some custom OS that doesn't support it on your server.
lrae··on Chatto is now open source
Looking at the screenshot, it seems to be the case, with servers at the left like on Discord.

Another alternative that does have it would be https://fluxer.app.

But tbf, both face the same issue: those communities that you want to switch between need to exist. :/ (But of course not an issue if you're the one creating them and you have users who are down to join them.)

lrae··on Chatto is now open source
Great work! Imo the most promising Discord alternative so far.

But I have a question, and maybe it is answered somewhere and I just couldn't find it, but is there currently a way to move a created community from e.g. the official hosting to self-hosted? I saw the mention about possible federation in the future, which would solve that (kind of), but currently it's not possible, I guess?

lrae··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
Sash windows are just not as common. Seems like they are in the UK somewhat, though numbers I found vary, but overall in Europe they're pretty uncommon.

And yes, there are options for tubes/ducts for the more common window types. Like tilt-and-turn windows, horizontally sliding or all the other kinds of inward or outward opening windows - but most of them are the ducted portable units the original comment was speaking of, which aren't great. There are also some better portable split units, but those are pricier and the install is not as easy. (They're great though.)

lrae··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
Probably because the UK - similar to most of Europe - does not use the US vertically sliding sash window type, does it? The typical "walmart window AC" does just not really exist in (most of) Europe, because the windows for it don't exist, afaik.

Edit: Turns out, sash windows are more commonly found in the UK (compared to other European countries), but still not as common as in the US. So, UK = not as hot (so far), thus still probably not worth it (yet) as a market.

lrae··on Kaspersky discovered malware targeting Steam users through Wallpaper Engine
Missed that, thanks! Guess I only searched for [Wallpaper Engine] and [Kaspersky] earlier to check if it's submitted already.

Surprised it's flagged. But then, the Securelist title is a bit clickbaity. It's still among the top 10 "games" on Steam, and like some comments in the other submission mentioned - bit funny that wallpapers as a vector are back / still a thing.

lrae··on Leaked OpenAI financials show $38.5B loss and compute burn
> Does training of new models go into RnD

Pretty likely R&D, but obviously would need to be confirmed by OpenAI.

The original reporting includes this:

> The documents revealed how much OpenAI paid Microsoft for services. In the 2025 calendar year, OpenAI paid Microsoft $10.59 billion for “Research and development” expenses. We believe this most likely refers to the cost of training OpenAI’s models.
