lpellis··on Launch HN: Fly.io (YC W20) – Deploy app servers close to your users
Well I just signed up and tested one of my Heroku apps, got it working with just a few clicks, really impressive. Are there any way to see stats like memory usage? What happens if an app goes over the limit? (heroku has some swap space before it kills an app, and then I can see it in the logs)
lpellis··on Launch HN: Fly.io (YC W20) – Deploy app servers close to your users
I have the timeout set to 10 seconds which certainly helps, I think the issue is how gunicorn/gevent handle web requests. I think each request spawns a new redis connection, and as far as I can see there is no global pool I can use :( On heroku you are limited to 20 connections in the free tier, and it quickly gets expensive.
lpellis··on Launch HN: Fly.io (YC W20) – Deploy app servers close to your users
The max monthly spend is awesome, I'l probably try it out just because of that :) Its a bit unclear to me though how exactly the heroku deploy works? Is it basically a replacement for the web dynos that heroku provides, but then still connecting to existing postgres instances for example? What are the limits for the redis store? I'm using it on heroku but constantly running into max connection issues, if you can improve that experience it is also a great win.

lpellis··on Show HN: I Wrote a Python Program to Play Google Dino Game Using GestRecognition
Thats pretty cool, I guess the video feed is slightly delayed, it looks like it jumps before you even do the gesture?
lpellis··on Show HN: `$` Can be used in any webpage from the browser console
$ is basically a shortcut for document.querySelector in the console, I wrote about some other things I found here: https://loftie.com/post/things-you-may-not-know-about-chrome...

lpellis··on A Personal API
I started building something like this for my personal site*, the idea was I already had accounts at Github/Instagram etc, why not use that to keep my site up to date? Some of the services (looking at you Instagram) are making it harder to get your data out though, its a bit of a challenge. Hoping to eventually make this available for other people to use.

lpellis··on uBlock Origin: Address first-party tracker blocking
liberation.fr is the site you want to access, blocking it will kinda defeat the purpose. Blocking *.liberation.fr also is not really an option as it contains some legitimate subdomains. You would have to look up the CNAME for every subdomain and block those on the fly (it seems to randomly rotate)
lpellis··on Instagram now forces people to sign in to view public profiles
Instagram also shut down their public api last year and are deprecating the graph api in a week. (5 Nov) https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-api/

The new api has no access to consumer (non-Business or non-Creator) instagram accounts.

lpellis··on Exotic Physics Phenomenon Involving Time Reversal Observed for First Time
Unfortunately not, ended a few years ago and the money was repurposed I assume for other ventures. I guess its hard to keep that price going, you need skilled people (like Randi) that knows the usual tricks.

Hackernews is skeptical of many things though, sometimes hard to filter through the noise.
lpellis··on Ask HN: How do you handle/maintain local Python environments?
pipenv works well enough for me, it creates a lock file so you get deterministic builds. Plus its supported by heroku if you ever decide to host with them. https://github.com/pypa/pipenv

lpellis··on John Carmack on the Joe Rogan Experience [video]
I can definitely see him becoming annoying for some contexts, but for this book I found his exciting enthusiasm perfect, reminded me of that early university/student energy.
lpellis··on John Carmack on the Joe Rogan Experience [video]
Very fun book indeed, the audiobook is also very good. (narrated by Wil Wheaton) https://www.audible.com/pd/Masters-of-Doom-Audiobook/B008K8B...
lpellis··on Google just deleted my nearly 10-year-old free and open-source Android app
Wow the same thing happened to me[1], luckily I was awake by chance and took action after the first email, scary to think that if I was just offline for a few days my whole account could have been banned with no recourse..

[1]My app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lpellis.se... was on the store for several years at the time, it was called 'Android Sensors'. (Google had issue with the name, I had to rename it)

@lladnar does your app maybe have 'Android' in the name? I believe that was the issue they had with mine, I dont even think humans are in the loop at all here to give feedback.

lpellis··on Show HN: StoryTime – Create stories about your code instead of documentation
This looks pretty cool. One thing I'd like to see that could make it really useful is oembed support, I'd love to be able to embed a sort of mini-tutorial on my own blog post.

lpellis··on A friendly web development tutorial for complete beginners (2017)
This looks pretty good. I had a lot of people tell me they get stuck following most basic tutorials since they all assume some level of basic knowledge that you forget you even have if you work in the field (stuff like 'where to put these files', or even that you can view your file in a browser by doubleclicking it). I even wrote a very basic getting started guide myself (https://medium.com/@lpellis/getting-started-with-web-develop...), but now I can rather send people to this guide :)

lpellis··on The Bitcoin Blockchain Visualized in 3D
I'm using https://threejs.org/ for the webgl stuff, the tricky part was figuring out how to map the coordinates to change the country highlighting. Ended up having to write a custom shader which was quite the learning curve :)
lpellis··on The Bitcoin Blockchain Visualized in 3D
Its a vue.js site that I host statically on Netlify, with django backend on heroku that pulls all the data. The trick to get things to load quickly is caching the data on https://www.keycdn.com/ (with the right headers you can set it up that the CDN queries the slow pages in the background and serves the cached ones meanwhile to keep things near real-time). I might do a writeup about that it took me a while to figure out.

lpellis··on The Bitcoin Blockchain Visualized in 3D
This looks like something from Tron, trippy. The height of the block is the amount of BTC, there are some huge (thousands of BTC) transactions happening. On a semi related note, I built a 3D visualization (globe) to see where these blocks are geographically mined. https://coinminingstats.com/globe
