lpellegr··on Ask HN: How to Evaluate IP Dataset?
As some said, don’t trust pricing or marketing claims, run your own benchmark based on your requirements.

Measurement-based probing has been used by major IP intelligence providers for years. Some just market it better than others But it’s not a silver bullet, a lot of IPs (mobile, CGNAT, enterprise) aren’t consistently probeable or yield ambiguous results.

In practice, no single method wins. Hybrid approaches usually perform better.

(For transparency: I work for https://ipregistry.co, worth including in your benchmark if you’re comparing providers.)

lpellegr··on ChatGPT knows my IP geolocation
This is mostly just basic IP geolocation. I work for Ipregistry (ipregistry.co), and this kind of lookup is something we provide: country, region, city, ASN, hosting provider, VPN usage and similar signals. Any service that sees your IP can request that information in a single query.

ChatGPT receives your IP when you connect. The model itself does not know your location, but the system around it can add location context before the model answers. Many products do this because it helps with weather, time zone handling or local recommendations.

Accuracy depends on your network setup. VPNs, mobile networks and corporate proxies can make the location drift quite a bit, but at a general level it is often good enough to shape responses.

The more important part is transparency. Inferring location from an IP is normal, but it should be clear to users when that information is being used.

lpellegr··on Tell HN: The ipinfo.io certificate expired, and they have HSTS enabled
There exist alternative solutions like ipregistry.co (note I work there).
lpellegr··on Show HN: News Alert - Real-time global news monitoring with keyword alerts
That's interesting but what sources are you supporting? are you crawling them periodically? at what rate?
lpellegr··on IPinfo started offering free unlimited country-level geolocation and ASN details
IPInfo appears to have good data, but their main advantage is strong marketing. They've effectively built a community of fanboys by publicly sharing techniques and methods that other major providers have been using for years or even decades.
lpellegr··on IPinfo's IP Hunt: 2.2M IPs submitted over 3 weeks
Let's people judge. There is no perfect solutions.

A great IP intelligence solution is also ipregistry.co

lpellegr··on IPinfo's IP Hunt: 2.2M IPs submitted over 3 weeks
You also have ipregistry.co (https://ipregistry.co/).
lpellegr··on Show HN: I built a fast, accurate translation API for 1/30th the price of Google
The idea is great but you will never compete with a solution like Google translate: one simple reason is that Google Translate is highly specialized and optimized. Did you try to compare the processing time?

Running an opensource AI model to perform translation may help and work in some cases but to be honest this has also a lot of limitations. The first being processing time and the second languages support. I am not even considering accuracy.

lpellegr··on Migrating to Cloudflare Email Routing
I thought exactly the same the first day Cloudflare announced Email Routing. Email sending is a few Billion with only a few large competitors. I guess that's one of their long-term plan or at least I hope so. They have knowledge, market, and money to provide better-added value than Amazon SES.
lpellegr··on Saving on egress switching from AWS to Hetzner
Great article. I wrote about a similar experience 9 months ago while switching from Google Cloud Storage to Scaleway Object Storage:

https://pellegrino.link/2021/05/31/scaleway-object-storage-s...

Similarly, I saved about x100. For sure, the services do not offer the same level of guarantees and speed but depending on my case it was worth a migration.

Looking forward to trying Cloudflare R2 soon!

lpellegr··on Ask HN: I'm a senior back end dev, what's the best way to learn front end?
I was in the same situation about 5 years ago: a lot of experience as a backend engineer and no real experience in frontend. Today, I am quite proud of what I know and built: noticeable.io, especially the dashboard.

My bet was to "learn" about the Web platform and not a specific framework. However, to build a Single Page App, you need a library. At that time, I fell in love with Polymer as a minimal library to create a Single Page App. Nowadays, this is replaced by Lit (lit.dev). The library is minimal and aims to use the Web platform as much as possible. I suggest giving it a look.

Besides, when I say "learn", I mean developing a project or something from scratch. You will most probably end up using TypeScript, Jest, Rollup/Webpack and Lit ;)

Good luck!

That's an interesting comparison but that's a shame to see great services such as IPregistry.co to not appear in your analysis.

Yep, ipregistry.co threat data.

lpellegr··on Misconceptions About IP Geolocation
Thanks for the links.

> If my ISP doesn't announce my IP address, then they can't connect me to the internet, which I pay them to do.

Indeed, it's more nuanced and that's the message that we try to give here. As long that you do not use IP geolocation to identify an individual by itself, it seems to be a legitimate use.

lpellegr··on Misconceptions About IP Geolocation
That's what is referred to as "HTML5 Geolocation API" in the article. The problem of this method is that it is really intrusive since it requires an explicit permission along with a device that includes a GPS chip.
lpellegr··on JavaScript Is Bad
but TypeScript is great, so JavaScript is not so bad?
lpellegr··on Ask HN: Was integrating with Zapier worth the time/effort?
I would say this depends on what your purpose is. If your service has a real value to integrate with multiple other services, or your customers ask for, then it's a time saver and thus you may save money by integrating with Zapier.

However, by experience, do not expect to get customers only because you are part of their catalog. Especially, since they have introduced partner tiers to get promoted (i.e. to appear in their newsletter, use cases, etc.). Previously, all integrations had this benefit, now you need to satisfy some criteria.

Regarding the integration, we made one for Noticeable.io last year, it took us some weeks. The documentation is not that bad but there was several steps that were involving human interactions with Zapier.

We're using Coinbase Commerce (https://commerce.coinbase.com).

Our experience was better with Coinbase than Paypal and we think it is as simple as Stripe, even if Stripe may require some work depending on what you want to achieve but their documentation is fantastic!

The worst solution from an integration point of view was Paypal. Their documentation is outdated, their dashboard UX is bad and their client libraries lack maintenance.

The only drawback we noticed while integrating Coinbase Commerce is that there is no testing flow provided. As a solution, we had to create a second account dedicated to testing and use real crypto.

lpellegr··on Show HN: Ipregistry – A Fast, Reliable IP Geolocation and Threat API
We understand an API introduces latency that might not be appropriate for some use cases. At this time we do not provide raw access to our database (although that’s something we aim to provide in the medium/long term). In the short term, we are working on a Docker image that you can deploy in your own infrastructure and co-locate with existing services.

Don’t hesitate to contact us (support@ipregistry.co) to discuss your use case.

lpellegr··on Show HN: Ipregistry – A Fast, Reliable IP Geolocation and Threat API
That's a great question.

We rely on a set of trusted sources. It includes public ones but also private ones thanks to partnerships we have with a few companies. This enables accurate filtering.

Besides, we know that false positives are an important point to prevent. That's why we update our database continuously.

That's a great question. Unlike with traditional payment platforms (Stripe, Paypal, etc.), we pay no fees for transactions made with crypto currencies. As a consequence, we offer 3% more tokens to our customers for the same price!

Thanks for your question. Indeed, ipdata is a competitor. We have published a recent blog post that compares them with our solution:

https://ipregistry.co/blog/ipdata-alternative

As a summary, you get responses in less time (our API is at least twice faster), more data points (company name, domain, IP type, security field is_cloud_provider). Our client libraries have support for caching. We provide a dashboard to check your usage and edit settings. Last but not least, you pay only for what you use lookup by lookup!

lpellegr··on Show HN: Ipregistry – A Fast, Reliable IP Geolocation and Threat API
Hey hackers!

We started to work on Ipregistry.co at the end of the last year for other services we run. After months of work, we are proud to say that more than 60% of the requests we serve are using the high-reliability geolocation dataset we are building. For this purpose, we process, analyze and correlate GB of data daily. As a fallback, we are still using Maxmind and IP2location but we hope to get rid of them near the end of this year.

* What is it for?

A lot of businesses (e.g. Airbnb, Netflix, npmjs, Stripe) rely on IP addresses as a non-intrusive solution to customize content and enrich data for their users: showing prices in users’ local currency, pinpointing location, timezone, company and connection type. You can learn more about use cases on the next link: https://ipregistry.co/use-cases

* Why Ipregistry.co?

Existing solutions are either too slow, too expensive or not complete enough. Even worse, some competitors artificially segment features that cost them no pennies. Ipregistry aims to change this situation.

With Ipregistry you get more geolocation info but also threat information that is essential to detect and prevent fraud. You can even get user agent data. All this in a single request.

* What’s the difference with existing competitors?

- Data is updated multiple times a day for accuracy.

- Ipregistry scales to thousand requests per second.

- Reliability is ensured with multiple points of presence using the Google Cloud infrastructure.

- Requests are served in less than 25 ms from most locations worldwide (https://ipregistry.co/status).

- You can create multiple API keys to separate concerns.

- You pay only for what you use lookup per lookup.

- Payment methods include cards, Paypal and cryptocurrencies.

- Upon registration, you get 100,000 free lookups for testing purposes.

- A dashboard is provided to monitor your usage and configure settings.

- Origin and IP filtering are supported with no extra fee.

- You can receive weekly or monthly usage reports.

- The API outputs JSON or XML.

- Official client libraries are provided with caching support.

lpellegr··on Ask HN: What Is Your Stack?
Here at Ipregistry (https://ipregistry.co) we use gulp, nunjucks with custom CSS and Javascript for the landing page. It's quite easy to maintain and static pages are perfect for SEO and fast loads.

The dashboard is a single app page that makes use of lit-html and web components.

The backend makes use of Kubernetes, Cloud Pub/Sub, Cloud Scheduler, Redis, Firestore, Firebase Hosting, etc.

Some parts make use of Cloudflare for CDN purposes.

CI/CD: Cloud build and Travis-ci for open-source clients.

If you are interested by what stack popular websites are using you should have a look at https://stackshare.io.

lpellegr··on Show HN: A Cloudflare app for sharing product announcements
Thanks for your question.

Noticeable integrates with Github via Zapier. You can create a Zap on Zapier that listens for your Github pushes and publish a new post in a Noticeable project.

Using Noticeable has multiple benefits over a Wordpress site: people can react to your publications with emoji or hidden comments. In addition, you get analytics per post and a trend at the project level.

Besides, Noticeable allows managing accesses to your collaborators, scheduling posts, collecting emails from subscribers interested by your updates but also to make announcements available in the right context on your pages via a nice and customizable widget.

There are other features such as publication segmentation and IP access control but the benefits of such features depend on your use-case.
