lowry··on The Markup – A new kind of journalistic organization
Societal harm? Sounds like a clear agenda.
lowry··on Ask HN: What open source project, in your opinion, has the highest code quality?
Lua. It's has everything a good C project should have: small size, simple build system, portability by using the simplest constructs and not ifdefs, a clear and well define scope that none dares trespassing.
lowry··on Why I Did Not Go to Jail (2014)
Thank you! So, Michelle is Sharlene.
lowry··on Why I Did Not Go to Jail (2014)
This is why this text did not land in the book.
lowry··on Lenovo: Companies working in China may have to install local backdoors
WAT?
lowry··on The Rise and Contentious Fork of RSS
I am reading HN through RSS, what demise?
lowry··on Linus Torvalds apologizes for his behavior, takes time off
It will be remembered as well as Shakespeare play.
lowry··on Ask HN: Why are cheaper hosting services like OVH not very popular?
Why not Hetzner or Leaseweb or Rackspace? There are lots of choice among big EU-based bare metal hosting services.
lowry··on Ask HN: Why are cheaper hosting services like OVH not very popular?
OVH is probably a bad example, they targeted mostly French and East Europeans willing to setup file sharing among friends.

They are still rebooting your servers if you happen to block ICMP requests, in an attempt to bring them back to live.

Yes, they diversified, but the spirit stayed.

Hetzner is much more professional, they targeted big file sharers and the porn industry from the inception.

lowry··on Skripal Poisoning Suspect's Passport Data Shows Link to Security Services
How did Bellingcat obtain those passport application files?
lowry··on Are Audiobooks as Good for You as Reading?
There is lack of decently read audiobooks in English at any price, and the situation changes little over time. Dictors are horrible and even blockbuster titles like "The Name of the Wind" have poor recordings.

On the other hand, I have access to a wealth of audiobooks in Russian, ranging from free-as-in-beer recordings from Vlad Kopp, Serguey Kirsanov and Igor Knyazev to literally hundreds of $2-4$ offers on litres.ru.

Interpreting audiobooks is an art. Some audiobooks are great performances that influence popular culture, like "Hard to be a god", starring Leonid Yarmolnik. Vlad Kopp gathers concert halls for his live reading performances. Igor Knyazev has a cult following.

If there is an example of copyright stifling culture, this is it. Russians had laxist copyright rules for a while, and the art of producing audiobooks flourished.

lowry··on Sheldon S. Cohen, IRS commissioner who computerized agency, dies at 91
How can a single guy computerize the whole IRS?

It probably just "happened" while he was its head. It would have happened anyway. Because progress.

lowry··on Google automatically sharing geotagged photos from Photos to Maps
Yes! I am pretty sure my photos were on Panoramio only. I never published them elsewhere, not even uploaded to Google Photos.
lowry··on Google automatically sharing geotagged photos from Photos to Maps
Same for me, but they took my 2009 photos from an old OSM-based website with panorama in its name that I used back then.

Can't remember the exact name of the website, though.

lowry··on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are useless
Same for Belgium.
lowry··on Java is still available at zero-cost
The author exposes his agenda by downplaying Oracle's decisions that impact Java availability to businesses and FUDing other options, e.g. he says that RedHat will push security fixes to OpenJDK first and repackage afterward, as if it was something bad.
lowry··on Very Good Security
Belgian eID is similar. But the state crippled the ability to sign with it, because they wanted to have control over authorisation.
lowry··on No healthy level of alcohol consumption, says major study
While sipping Schnapps.
lowry··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
Hey,

The page you refer to has a section "NHTSA and NASA Investigation Verdict" and it says nothing about the software bugs.

lowry··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
Is it what people call fake news nowadays?

I once had a project with a major lobbying organisation with links throughout the automotive industry. The one that published regular reports on real vs declared emissions discrepancies long before the VW scandal.

They were unanimous when asked about the unintended acceleration bug. It was a case of mass hysteria.

lowry··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
It is common knowledge that Toyota uncontrolled acceleration bug was completely imaginary, see for example http://revisionisthistory.com/episodes/08-blame-game
lowry··on Future elections may be swayed by chatbots
What a crap...
lowry··on What If Banks Were Publicly Owned? In LA, This May Soon Be a Reality
Dexia and Belfius are state owned in Belgium since the state bailed them out in 2008. Same for Ethias, an insurance company.
lowry··on Are diesel’s days numbered? A view from a trip to BYD’s electric bus factory
There are cool electric buses running in the streets of Minsk, Belarus since a couple of years. IIRC, they have nikel-iron batteries with have limited capacity but good lifetime, and they recharge quickly. An electric bus runs for 30-40 min from terminus to terminus, then charges for 10 min from trolley power lines.

Pretty neat, especially considering that nickel and iron are extracted in nearby Russia and are much cheaper than lithium.

lowry··on Update on Taking Tesla Private
It is more nuanced than that, I guess.
lowry··on I don't trust Signal
I would agree with you if only Signal would not ask for so many permissions on my phone.
lowry··on New StackOverflow code of conduct
It's funny how examples of discouraged posts are clear and concise while their alternatives are verbose and harder to understand.
lowry··on User banned from Das Keyboard forums for telling people of open-source drivers
I ordered a new one from https://pexonpcs.co.uk/products/filco-cables but you can also make your own USB cable yourself if you manage to get the right connector. FYI, the female socket on the Filco keyboard breaks apart when pulling the USB cable, it's made of very fragile plastic.
lowry··on G Suite Horror Story
I am an enterprise programmer by day and I've been running mail servers for 20 years both for hobbies and for private use. I rarely spend more than an evening per year, mostly to keep up with new developments in that space. A few years ago I deployed DMARC. Last year I registered in postmaster tools at Google, Yahooo, Yandex and a few others. This is it.
lowry··on Ask HN: How do you backup your files without depending on a third party service?
restic to Google Cloud Storage. Their Coldline storage costs a few euros per month for ~1Tb. And I can easily change backends if I want, restic supports many options.

The only problem is low upload speeds for residential customers.
