lowken10··on My experience with off-shoring teams and what went wrong
About 15 years ago my company made a long term investment in hiring software developers from India.

Early on were some of them terrible developers? Yes, but so are many United States based Developers.

Now 15 years later I can tell you that my India based coworkers are some of the best developers that I've ever worked with.

My question is why isn't Elizabeth Holmes in prison? She is a disgrace.

And I was a huge fan of hers (I thought she would be a good role model for my daughter) before her crimes came to light.

You idea is something that Marshall Brain wrote about in "Manna"... http://marshallbrain.com/manna1.htm
lowken10··on Banks should let COBOL die
The company I work for has piles of Visual Basic 6 code that will be here for as long as their product is viable (Prepaid credit cards services). The growth is simply not their to perform a rewrite. It's sad but is also a reality.

She should go to prison.
lowken10··on Why LINQ beats SQL
I love that mindset. By your logic we should all be coding in assembly.
lowken10··on Software developers who started after 35, 40 or 50
I've been programming professionally for 15 years (C# & SQL Server) and I've encountered exactly one Algebra problem in my entire career.

Now some jobs require the most advanced math on the planet. For example the guys that developer the SQL Server query optimizer and absolute math gods and they have to be.

However for 95% (my own made up statistic) of software development jobs advanced math is not a requirement.

lowken10··on An Introduction to the Lambda Calculus (2015)
I try to use the Why, What, How, What If framework..

Why - Why should you care about this, why does this matter. What - What is it. How - How does it work. What If - Here is the thing you can do right now to get started...

lowken10··on Ask HN: Is the concept of a one-person software shop still viable?
I went after the hair stylist market for three months as part of The Foundation. I quickly came to the realization that it was not a good market for the simple reason that the owners of hair saloons like to cut hair. Because of this they are very hard to get on the phone.

One key for any potential SaaS market is to make sure you have a way to reach that market. Make sure they are on email or social media in large numbers.

I too pivoted to information products. Good luck with your course.

lowken10··on Apple Abandons Development of Wireless Routers
Sometimes people make the mistake thinking that people want the perfect solution when often good enough is fine. One great example is .mp3 vs lossless audio compression. The average listener (myself included) don't care about about perfect audio. We are perfectly happy with good enough.

Wireless networking falls into this category. Yes a wired home network would be faster by for the vast majority tasks wireless is fine.

lowken10··on Ask HN: Did knowing or learning a not-so-famous natural language benefit you?
My first job was at a large casino as a systems analyst. The casino switched CMS software and went to an AS400 RPG based application named ACSC. I took it upon myself to learn the database of the application and also to learn RPG programming (shudder).

This lead to my first software development position at a large international bank.

I worked as an RPG developer for three years then I pivoted to SQL Server/C#.

So yes knowing a not so famous language benefited me.

lowken10··on What If the Newspaper Industry Made a Colossal Mistake?
I agree... Who really cares. If something important happens locally someone will tell you about it.
lowken10··on Ask HN: What is your favorite YouTube channel for developers?
I love thenewboston... He is great for introduction to a variety of technologies.
lowken10··on The Most Popular Online Course Teaches You to Learn (2015)
Anki includes a free sync feature to keep you desktop and mobile device synced. The only cost of Anki is the one time $25 cost of the iOS version. You can get around this by using the we version on your iPhone.
lowken10··on The Most Popular Online Course Teaches You to Learn (2015)
I agree. I always looked at the math questions first. Then I worked backward to figure them out.
lowken10··on ITT Technical Institutes Shuts Down
I went to community college and did well enough to get into a real university( University of Florida). The biggest shock of my life was that in most cases my community college teachers were superior to the processors at Florida.

lowken10··on Apple launches coding camps for kids in its retail stores
The point is not that kids are going to learn how to program in two 90 minute sessions, rather the point is to spark a kids imagination and maybe that kid decides to explore the subject further.

My eight-year-old loves making movies on his iPad using iMovie and I'm so happy that Apple is offering a course.

lowken10··on Just who are burner phones for anyway?
My wife paid $203/month for ATT service before I switched her to Cricket. Now we pay $35/month. Same phone same network...
lowken10··on Ask HN: Can any iOS Developers answer me this?
You need to post this question to Stackoverflow (www.stackoverflow.com).
lowken10··on Ask HN: State of Internet forums
Check out Discourse.org. I set this for for Dane Maxwell & Andy Drish of the Foundation and it is a solid modern forum solution. And it's open source.
lowken10··on When Global Warming Kills Your God
I couldn't have said it better my self. Global Warming is the biggest scientific fraud since Galileo got into trouble with the Catholic church over the idea that the earth is not the center of the Universe.
lowken10··on Ask HN: Freelance or product dev to transition to indie work?
I recommend TheFoundation.com, Dane's program changed my life and you are a perfect fit for this program.

The program centers on building a SaaS application in order to acheive financial independence, but there is just so much more to it.

Listen I would love to chat with you about this topic. If you are interested drop me an email at ken@kennethlowrey.com

Cheers

lowken10··on Dragon’s Lair – An Arcade Story
I had my own story of glory. I was in college (1996) and I was in the downtown college bar/club strip. It was at the very beginning of my college career and I hadn't made friends yet. Anyway there was an old Galaga game and I started playing.

I employed the tick that makes it so enemies can't fire.

I then proceeded to play to a very high level. Well a bunch of people say me playing and were so impressed at how far I was getting int he game. They didn't realize that I had employed the "trick".

I was cool moment and I felt like a star for just a brief moment.

lowken10··on Does it ever heal?
