lowdest··on Restaurant Menu Trends
There's some nuance here. If you soak your meat in lime juice for several hours, the acid is going to penetrate deep into the meat. It doesn't do nothing.
lowdest··on Zeiss's "Holocam" turns glass windows into cameras
It collects through the edge, and the glass can be (apparently) flat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NORPeCcIXRQ
lowdest··on Keystroke timing obfuscation added to ssh(1)
Also many interviews are structured so there simply won't be time to finish the exercise if you're going slow.
lowdest··on The Stick of Jan Sloot (2004)
GPT can make great sentences, it's just not the default operating mode. LLMs are capable of amazing things if you can get them into the right section of the latent space.
lowdest··on AI-generated art lacks copyright protection, D.C. court says
This applies only to under-specified prompting. I usually go in with a finished image in mind, and use very long prompts and inpainting to make it real. It can take dozens of images to get the prompt to reflect what I have in mind, then several more iterations to polish it. While I can technically produce several images per minute, I usually spend about 30 minutes to 1 hour to get the output I want, and more if it's going to be an extra large or complicated piece.

This is very much like the "is electronic music real music?" debates when people can quickly throw together some presets and hit play.

lowdest··on The burden of Long Covid “so large as to be unfathomable”
Take your chances with what? The vaccine was free for me all 3 times I had it. When I had Covid post-vaccine it was much more mild than when I had it pre-vaccine, though there are several confounding variables present there.
lowdest··on Silicon Valley’s business model is a scam
Literally. Seattle was pretty okay with taxi service in 2011, but in San Francisco, the same taxi company that dropped me off in South San Francisco one day in early 2012 just told me I was on my own and they could not help me when I tried to get a ride home. No numbers for partner companies or suggestions or anything. I was stranded, and willing to pay top dollar. I could not believe the complete failure of the market just a few minutes outside the city.
lowdest··on Leveling up in job interviews for software engineers (2022)
Second this. I've taken to studying a list of previous examples because I frequently can't dig up ideal examples from memory on the spot. A touch of adrenaline from nerves, even if not obvious to others, really affects my performance in this way.
lowdest··on Leveling up in job interviews for software engineers (2022)
True in aggregate, but special conditions exist. E.g. when interviewing for a rarely available position with extraordinary compensation.
lowdest··on Pizza rolls and the meaning of midcentury food
Latchkey didn't mean locked up at home, rather it meant the child was returning home alone after school and in possession of the home door key.
lowdest··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
There are some properties in a neighboring county where a guy has been running junk yards in residential neighborhoods. 50+ rusted junkers stacked in a suburban yard, against local law. When the law finally is about to seize the land, he's moved it all to other residential properties in the area. Lawsuits have been going on since the 90s. I believe he's lost at least one house and possibly spent some time in jail, but it keeps going.
lowdest··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
In one notable case, it was decided to not bore all the way down to bedrock, resulting is a sinking building and many lawsuits. More commonly, someone complains that a planned building will cast a shadow, and after spending millions the builders are not allowed to proceed.
lowdest··on Stability.ai sent a take down request to Runway ML's SD v1.5 citing IP Leak
Stability has a research team. They've just brought over David Ha (@hardmaru on Twitter) from Google Brain to lead strategy.
lowdest··on Denmark not offering second Covid booster shot to healthy adults under 50
Like the Omicron booster that has limited availability?
lowdest··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
If I've learned anything from reading espionage fiction novels -- you book a flight for tomorrow and leave on the bus tonight.

Have you looked into any of the lending platforms? These are pretty well controlled for. Crypto loans are typically collateralized, so that below a certain loan-to-value ratio, the collateral belongs to the loan provider and the borrower can keep what was borrowed. The exact rules vary place to place. It's a calculated risk that is competitive with other investments.

People borrow to avoid triggering capital gains, or to gain leverage or to short.

I'm fond of my loved ones, but I also like creating new ones. I also would like to see very long term plans come to fruition. It seems very much like a "640K ought to be enough for anybody" problem.

Works of art that require thousands of lifetimes to complete. Deep understanding of the physical world. Exploring the universe. Much more.

>Imagine living a quadrillion years. Even as a god, that would be miserable.

This seems very subjective, I don't agree at all.

lowdest··on U.S. Secret Service Launches Cryptocurrency Awareness Hub
>Yes for the common retail person sure, but someone has to purchase stocks to put them into an index. Those are professionals who evaluate PE ratios, profitability, and financial statements.

This is not what an index is. You are describing a fund, but an index fund explicitly does not evaluate PE ratios, profitability, and financial statements, they buy everything in the index according to the market cap. Some proprietary indices are privately curated in the way you describe, but in common use the "index" means all of the companies, rather than a curated subset.

lowdest··on Bitcoin value tumbles almost 50% since record November
Plenty of alternative chains out there with cool experiments that are cheap to run.
lowdest··on The Mirrortable
That seems like a really biased piece.
lowdest··on TheNFTBay: Fake, but Worth Discussing
The best description I've ever read: NFTs are a postmodern absurdity asset that you buy/sell independent of the underlying art, the NFT is given value by the fact the art was made in a way that anoints the NFT as canonical.
lowdest··on Show HN: Cedille, the largest French language model, released in open source
Have you worked with GPT2 or 3 before? It is often convincing enough that it looks borrowed from a real source. To prove it is generating it from scratch, throw a non-sequitur in there. Ask it about cooking to attract dragons, or the recipe to a love potion starting from fish stock, or something.
lowdest··on S.Korea broadband firm sues Netflix after traffic surge from 'Squid Game'
Netflix has no association with this ISP, you do. It's your choice to request Netflix streams for delivery through the ISP. Blaming Netflix for this would be like an apartment building blaming Amazon for delivering too many boxes to the mail room.
lowdest··on The grandmaster diet: How to lose weight while barely moving (2019)
These kind of posts attract lots of debate, maybe less so on HN, but to strengthen OP's statement: every technique beyond total calories intake is an optimization. Sometimes, if your body and lifestyle is in a situation that has many opportunities for non-calorie weight loss optimization, it may seem like total calories is not the most important factor. This is a confusing illusion because those optimization opportunities will change over time, and as you address them. Total calorie intake is the underlying reality of weight loss that will not change.

That said, there are a lot of useful optimizations and hacks out there. OP says exercise is almost irrelevant, but I can say that training up the ability for endurance exercise is really effective for me personally. During quarantine I've gone from sedentary to completing 10 mile runs, which have noticeably helped me lose fat. In the past I've also had successful experiments with restrictive diets like paleo, keto, and intermittent fasting. YMMV; experiment with optimizations, but never forget about total calories.

lowdest··on Star Citizen Progress Tracker v1.0
Echoes of 2003 when we were forming corporations and organizing ranks and building websites for EVE Online before it was actually released. Except that game actually released.
lowdest··on Stress does turn hair gray, and it’s reversible
You can practice until the nerves are gone. I've been doing Leetcode weekly competitions, after a while it's just another timed coding challenge.

I've noticed training cardio helps me handle anxiety better, both because I can better handle the physical effects when they arise, and the training itself removes anxiety I'm feeling at that moment.

lowdest··on Rest In Peace, John. I was lucky to know you so deeply
Slightly off topic, but Captain Disillusionment did a great video recently on Flight of the Navigator: https://youtu.be/tyixMpuGEL8
lowdest··on XUAN-Bike: Self-riding, riderless bike
The E-bike rental business will be significantly more profitable with these. Automated delivery to your location when you rent, automated return when you're done. No more paying staff to collect bikes and return them to high-traffic areas, and probably fewer bikes lost overall.
