I hate unnecessary packaging of any kind. Especially when theres so much of it it becomes a struggle to get through. Unfortunately I dont think its limited to Asia.
louislouis··on [dead]
In Hong Kong Haagen-Daz sells an icecream on a stick. It's packaged in a plastic wrapper inside a paper box. I bought it once and when I finally got through all the packaging the actual icecream was half the size of the box it came in! What a rip-off.
louislouis··on [dead]
In Asian culture the women prefer lighter skin and see it as a sign of beauty. It's not that Unilever is saying non-white is a problem, they're just tapping into the cultural belief thats already there.
louislouis··on A List Apart's 2009 Survey For People Who Make Websites
Aww I wanted to see results at the end :(
louislouis··on Shit My Dad Says Gets a TV Deal after 72 tweets
Another quality one..

"Son, people will always try and fuck you. Don't waste your life planning for a fucking, just be alert when your pants are down."

louislouis··on Tell HN: Couldn't Sleep Last Night, Wrote a (No-Flash) HTML5 Viewer for YouTube
sexy!
louislouis··on [dead]
You can just move when u want. There's no delay or will power involved.
louislouis··on [dead]
Same. I got this no less than 2 nights ago. Opened my eyes but couldn't move my body. I looked over at the bedroom door and thought someone was peering in. Freaked me out but in my head I was like 'oh its this again. You know what, freaky creature at the door, I'm too tired to fight and move my body, now im going back to sleep.' He disappeared and I had fantastic sleep.
louislouis··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or are HN comments becoming more and more negative?
Comments get upvoted for different reasons. Split the karma into sections like funny, insightful, cool, whatever.. then u can weed out the crap.
louislouis··on Success Lessons From The Man Who Was Lost In the Jungle
Great interview. Very enlightening to say the least. He should be on TED.com. When is the Barack Mitra interview available?
louislouis··on Ask HN: Please review my new project, Film vs Film
Average of 50 page views is great, but whats the % of returning visitors? I think u've gota find/create a reason for users to return. Neat idea nonetheless.
louislouis··on Dyson's overpriced fan and the Coandă Effect
Pricing it anythng lower wouldn't tie in with the Dyson brand. Could you imaging if they were selling these at £20, who then would want one? Everyone who needs a fan already has a fan. But if you have one of these £200 toys sat in your house, you're sure to look cool and feel cool with that fanless air blown in your face.
louislouis··on Iceland looks to serve the world.
I like the idea that the internet will be plugged in and powered by the earths own internal heat. It's like the virtual world and natural world becoming as one.
louislouis··on Flash 3D image slider
sorry, is it me or is there no demo on the site?

edit: I guess its the big red 3d cube with the white writing. But it says to play/spin/shade/slice.. I don't see those controls anywhere.. would be good if I could play with it immediately without downloading and installing.

louislouis··on Can You Be Shy and Still Succeed in Business?
"Introverted simply means you are more comfortable by yourself or with one other person."

"An introvert is often very good at relationship selling. Success in business is not always about being a visible leader - many F1000 CEOs are introverts."

Yes! This gives me hope as an introvert myself.

Personally I think shy people can change, they just need more social interaction. I was pretty shy when I was younger, so I threw myself into a people facing jobs like bar work and retail. Things changed for the better.

louislouis··on A Quest to Read a Book a Day for 365 Days
She's probably reading up on it.
louislouis··on A story of "launch" disaster: fast-food style
So if a competitor site is launching, shut down your site for the day and redirect all traffic to their site in an attempt to flood their server? Interesting tactic but I don't think it's gona work somehow.
louislouis··on Learning to juggle grows brain networks for good
A guy at party who was totally off his face on amphetamine told me this while juggle 3 balls. He said the skill synchronously activated both left and right side of his brain. He was defo on the right lines and since inspired me juggle too.
louislouis··on The illusion of gender
Majority of Asian girls, be it Chinese, Japanese, Korean don't like to be tanned. Having light skin is seen as beautiful. I guess this could be related.
louislouis··on Ask HN: Your biggest non-technical hack/discovery
haha, nice hacks indeed! The following week you should've changed it to OUT OF BATTERY
louislouis··on Ask HN: Your biggest non-technical hack/discovery
It was the last year of college, my student card had only 2 months left before it expired. I deliberately lost it and got a replacement which extended the expiration date to 3 years more since new cards were in for next years batch of students. Needless to say I've enjoyed the student discounts all this time.

Hacking Bus Tickets: I was a poor student at the time and 'all day' bus tickets were expensive for me. After 1 week of paying full prices, I had collected enough tickets to duplicate the fonts using photoshop and print my own tickets :D

Coke Machine: At school there was a vending machine where if you pressed the coke button multiple times and fast enough, it would give u 2 cokes for the price of 1.

School Passwords: I was 14 I think, coded up a basic popup box in VB saying 'Please verify your username and password', the input was sent to a txt file and there was a nice little Netscape Navigator icon to make it seem legit lol. I had the .exe running on startup on maybe 2-3 computers. Over 1 week I had hundreds of passwords including the network administrator pass. :D

louislouis··on Ask HN: I've tried lots of things but haven't finished any.
Success is 99% failure. Keep trying.
louislouis··on Ask HN: What's your income worth to you?
Give it a shot. You say you're inbetween jobs rights now so you've got nothing to lose. If it doesn't work out you can always leave and find something else. By the sounds of it, the company would be great to work for and you'd be happy there. You can't put a price on happyness and if love doing what u do, it wont seem like work.
louislouis··on Freaky Sleep Paralysis: Being Awake in Your Nightmares
Solution to waking up during this is to wiggle your toes. I had sleep paralysis frequently back when I was toking on the herb. I was also experiencing lucid dreams a lot then. Oh and the best way to stay in a lucid dream is to look into your hands/palms if you feel yourself awakening. Tried and tested :)
louislouis··on The best paper airplane in the world
Mine flew surprisingly well. Took around 20mins to build and I've just lobbed it out of my balcony on the 30th floor lol. It was too dark outside to follow but will try again in the daytime :D
louislouis··on Google to Employees: No Christmas Bonus, Here's a G1 Instead
Sending out G1s to all employees worldwide is still a great gesture IMO. Forget the $1k or $15k, a gift is a gift.

Now imagine the amount of recommendations, improvements, suggestions that these top brains will be making for the G1. That's gona be interesting.

louislouis··on Why Apple Won't Allow Adobe Flash on iPhone
Hmmm what about the Youtube player on there already? Maybe that should be made available for other FLV video sites
louislouis··on Unhappy people watch TV, happy people read/socialize
Hang on, if you're unhappy, you're obviously not going to go out socializing cos nobody wants to talk to a miserable face and alcohol will only amplify the unhappiness.

When I'm unhappy I like to be on my own and ride it out, watch tv shows online to cheer me up. So TV shows make me happy not TV makes me unhappy.

Open Question: How many hours of TV do you watch per week? I'm on around 3hrs (Heroes, Prison Break, Entourage) but all my shows are watched online without the silly commercials.
