But mostly I like HN.

loudthing··on How to Befriend Crows
"How to befriend crows", also known as "how to get away with a murder".
loudthing··on Noise cameras to be trialled in England to tackle ‘boy racers’
I've always hated the phrase "boy racer". So condescending...
loudthing··on Visitors to Qatar for the World Cup need to install spyware on their phone
Apparently the one app requires permissions for "an overview of your exact location, the ability to make direct calls via your phone and the ability to disable your screen lock."

I've never heard of any app being able to make calls or disable the lock screen. Is that even possible? I suspect maybe on Android?

loudthing··on The Next Mainstream Programming Language: A Game Developer’s Perspective (2005) [pdf]
Not when you factor in equipment, travel, keeping the lights on, etc.
loudthing··on An employee at EpicGames wants me to fill out this questionnaire to use my OSS
Because Jeff Geerling is an internet personality and uses opportunities like this for publicity.
loudthing··on Why is life expectancy in the US lower than in other rich countries? (2020)
With a good chunk of that money being allocated to getting young Americans killed (i.e. military spending).
loudthing··on The 8bit Keyboard
Reminds me of the 8-bit guy's device he created for manually programming character lcd displays.

loudthing··on The 8bit Keyboard
It demonstrates how technology we take for granted obfuscates how complex basic tasks can be.
loudthing··on A Macintosh History (1986)
"This is a keyboard that is sure to provoke controversy."

I miss this sort of drama...

loudthing··on Checkbox Olympics
It would be nice if I got to see how I did against other players.
loudthing··on Just another Apollo? Part two (2005)
Up. Politics is a major detriment to NASA's efficiency.
loudthing··on Xerox Star Keyboard
It's weird they don't say what year its from. (AFAIK this keyboard mouse combo appeared in 1981).
loudthing··on Photos of chickens, taken by chickens
No one likes a non runny white.
loudthing··on The Floppotron 3.0
You must be fun at parties.

Edit: :P

loudthing··on The Floppotron 3.0
That retro looking CLI gui is pretty slick.
loudthing··on Hexwords: Hex colors that are similar to words
This is simultaneously interesting and useless.
loudthing··on Ask HN: Feeling burned out at an early stage in my career
Hang in there, man. I can totally relate. I too find myself getting tired out at the three year mark at companies, and switching things up has always helped. Although it's easier to not burn the bridge when you switch positions internally rather than start a completely different company (since often that other company can be the main competitor to the one you are leaving).
loudthing··on GitHub Star History Graph
Github has always had a bad history graph. I've always wondered why we can't just have a live Github history graph like in Sourcetree.
loudthing··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
Good point. V8 gave us Node.js, right? Also I've been out of the loop for a while now about Firefox. My understanding was Firefox had a pretty bad memory leak for a long time. Was that ever resolved?

Edit: Saw your edit. Glad the firefox memory problem was resolved.

loudthing··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
Crazy thing is Mozilla was heavily funded by Google for years before Chrome came out.
loudthing··on FireZone – Open-source VPN server and firewall
Thanks for posting. What are the use cases for Firezone exactly? Is the intention to simplify networking configuration in data centers? (as opposed to the zero config nature of Tailscale devices that could be anywhere on the internet?)
loudthing··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
How did Chrome become so popular instead of Firefox in the first place? Was it purely Google's advertising of their browser? Brand recognition is so important to typical consumers.
loudthing··on Web scraping with Python open knowledge
The main perpetrator I've come across (in, I'll admit, my limited experience with scraping) was Google services. It seemed somewhat obvious to me initially while playing around with Beautiful Soup, the most valuable resource I could use for scraping was Google search, followed by Gmail and Google Finance. I had no luck using BS with any of these services.

Largely this taught me to be creative with my data sources. For example, I built a virtual weather vane powered by a Raspberry Pi that would scrape my local airport's website to get wind direction data, then turn the vane via a servo to the correct direction. So my takeaway from this project was scraping isn't as straight forward as one would thing, there's more of an art to it in order to figuring out where to get the information you want.

loudthing··on Knots 3D – Learn how to tie over 150 useful knots
This is a very valuable resource. My only constructive criticism would be maybe providing multiple point of views for each step because it's not always obvious what the step requires to the laymen when showing 2d images.
loudthing··on Web scraping with Python open knowledge
It can be frustrating learning web scraping with Python when so many sites actively block scraping.
loudthing··on Internet drama in Canada
... and largely, when American companies set up shop in Canada, they create a wholly owned subsidiary that is a Canadian company. I.e. McDonald's Canada and General Motors Canada are separate entities from their parent organizations.

Fun fact posted here before: The McDonald's locations that were recently shuttered in Russia were specifically founded by McDonald's Canada.

loudthing··on Hacking a Raspberry Pi into a Pluggable Amiga CPU
This is a great, tangible example of how quickly computing has progressed over the last 40 years. Makes me wonder what sort of crazy, fun things we will be able to do in the future when today's technology becomes "retro".
loudthing··on GameBoy Graphics: Tiles, Palettes, and Encoding [video]
Really cool video. I love it when people teach concepts through using the concepts themselves (like how he shows himself in an accurate Gameboy display matrix and even "fades" the video of himself as he explains how fading worked).
