loudandskittish··on Bobby Prince, composer for Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Duke Nukem 3D, has died
Pulled out my guitar to play the Duke Nukem theme and At Doom's Gate (...uh, minus those runs...)
loudandskittish··on We let AIs run radio stations
My first thought when I saw the headline was, "Did anyone even notice a difference?"
loudandskittish··on Show HN: Files.md – Open-source alternative to Obsidian
So, this comes up pretty much every time Obsidian is mentioned... to the point where I'm curious as to where the idea that it's open source comes from in the first place.
loudandskittish··on Venom and Hot Peppers Offer a Key to Killing Resistant Bacteria
Oh, cool, so another thing I was avoiding due to H Pylori actually could've helped... (but seriously, thanks for posting this).
loudandskittish··on ChatGPT Images 2.0
Exactly how I feel. There is already more art, movies, music, books, video games and more made by human beings than I can experience in my lifetime. Why should I waste any time on content generated by the word guessing machine?
loudandskittish··on ChatGPT Images 2.0
There are already more games being released on Steam than anyone can keep up with, I'm not sure how adding another "wave" on top of it helps.
loudandskittish··on Apple buys Israeli startup Q.ai
This story has Apple + $2B acquisition + AI

...how is this not at the top of the page?

loudandskittish··on eBay explicitly bans AI "buy for me" agents in user agreement update
...haven't bots been buying things off eBay since the 90s?
loudandskittish··on As AI gobbles up chips, prices for devices may rise
Love all the variations of "8GB of RAM should be enough for anybody" in here.
loudandskittish··on PS5 now costs less than 64GB of DDR5 memory. RAM jumps to $600 due to shortage
Until I got the last part, I actually thought you were being serious.
loudandskittish··on Squirrels hunting and eating meat
...something happened. Growing up, I had cats that ate squirrels. Then, sometime around the early 2000s, I had cats that were being chased by squirrels.
loudandskittish··on "This is not a joke, Funko just called my mom"
So... why are they harassing the dude's mother?
loudandskittish··on Yes Prime Minister, questionnaire design matters
> "First of all, to be clear, we would never ask questions on such a topic in this way."

I love how they worded that. Having once worked for Ipsos, they DEFINITELY do it, but the sentence is correct, I don't recall any instances of it being done "on such a topic."

loudandskittish··on Death Valley National Park now offering a rare opportunity – kayaking
"Americans will use anything but the metric system."
loudandskittish··on Spreadsheet "breaks" Apple Vision Pro eye-tracking
To me, all this feels like recreating "Hollywood UIs" that were designed for the benefit of the audience watching and not an actual user.
loudandskittish··on Show HN: Improve cognitive focus in 1 minute
So, does the fact that I have zero trouble focusing on the dot for 60 seconds mean I DON'T have ADHD, contrary to what so many people on social media have been trying to convince me?
loudandskittish··on A site that tracks the price of a Big Mac in every US McDonald's
Yeah, I used to stop at McDonald's on my way home from a big grocery run and stopped when I saw the fries there cost more than the giant bag of frozen fries I had just bought...
loudandskittish··on Margaret Atwood Reviews a Margaret Atwood Story by AI
Indeed, I've come across more instances of things that were supposedly AI-generated that turned out to have been made by a human being...
loudandskittish··on Why are there so many colourful houses in Bristol?
...I'd always heard it was to make it easier to find your house after too much Screech.
loudandskittish··on We are retroactively dropping the iPhone’s repairability score
I'm always suspicious when I open comments and see a whole lot of people posting variations of the same talking points as top-level threads... even if I happen to agree with those points.
loudandskittish··on Wikipedia user edits over 90k uses of “comprised of”
I'm finding this entire comment section confusing and I genuinely want to understand what is so offensive about what this editor did. To me this does not look like a problem that requires a solution and I even appreciate the essay (I've always had a hard time understanding the usage of 'comprises').

...yet I'm seeing unironic comparisons to both 1984 and Nazi Germany, so ... what this person did is evil?

Can someone please help me understand this?

loudandskittish··on Read “Gravity’s Rainbow” fifty years later
Damn, these comments are scaring me. I recently added the book to my to-read list after learning that it was a big influence on Hideo Kojima, but now I'm worried about what I'm getting myself into.

I suppose I should at least, finally, finish Infinite Jest to prime myself.

loudandskittish··on Bing Image Creator
Huh, this one actually seems to work... I ask for pixel art and it gives me pixel art (Stable Diffusion and DALL-E keep giving me needlepoint).
loudandskittish··on “Here's the number I used to win the lottery“ –Entrepreneurs giving advice
I'm reminded of the song Common People by Pulp:

"But still you'll never get it right/'Cause when you're laying in bed at night/Watching roaches climb the wall/If you called your dad he could stop it all."

loudandskittish··on “Here's the number I used to win the lottery“ –Entrepreneurs giving advice
Yeah, this is one of the things that drives me nuts about these "inspirational" stories where some millionaire/billionaire talks proudly about how their first business failed, their car was repo'd, bank foreclosed on them, etc... but I've never heard one talk about what they did between that and the successful business. Where did they sleep? How did they afford food?
loudandskittish··on Why do we create modern desktop GUI apps using HTML/CSS/JavaScript? (2022)
I have to wonder if I'm missing something or not understanding something. I keep seeing "WebGPU will fix it!" as a response to criticism of using HTML5 technology, but to me, using 3D rendering technology to make UI elements more responsive feels a bit like using a rocket launcher to take out a fly?
loudandskittish··on Is remote work bad for the economy?
I find it odd that for decades, people were shamed for wasting money at cafes ...but then as soon as people stopped going to cafes, it's suddenly an economic disaster?
loudandskittish··on Mona Sans and Hubot Sans
...I can't deal with that f
loudandskittish··on “I don’t care about cookies“ web extension acquired by Avast
"A cookie has been detected"
loudandskittish··on Gimp development release 2.99.12 includes initial CMYK support
Wow!! I've only been waiting for this for 15 years!
