lotophage··on “Laws” of software estimation for complex work (2021)
Absolutely. I find it far more accurate and when it's not, it's better to underpromise and overdeliver than to overpromise and underdeliver.
lotophage··on “Laws” of software estimation for complex work (2021)
One of the most common mismatches between estimation and execution that I have encountered I phrase, "You never anticipate the unanticipated". During estimation people are generally optimistic and estimate assuming that they will not encounter any problems or issues along the way. That is rarely the case, and you can never assign an estimate of effort to them in advance since you don't know what those problems will be or how long they will take to resolve. You can assign a "buffer" of effort but this is just plucking numbers out of the air. I know that this is pretty obvious and basic stuff, but I'm amazed at how many people look at me like I'm crazy in planning meetings when I try to temper expectations when presented overly optimistic schedules.

During freezes there's often exceptions for teams who've lost people, especially for critical roles. i.e. you can't increase count but you can keep it the same.

An article in The Atlantic about it recently too:

lotophage··on Study: Electroshock therapy more successful for depression than ketamine
Came to mention this! That is one of my all-time favourite TED talks. If nothing else, it's a fascinating story told well.

There is some overlap here with a recent article in The Atlantic article that makes the case for delaying the start of school for boys:

> More disconcerting, it seems that anyone who posts about this issue on reddit gets downvoted and teamed up against by established Reddit accounts, that I have to imagine are owned by Stripe. These account have some established reddit history on them, mainly talking about coding in PERL. It's a little sus.

I too am a little suspicious of anyone who codes in PERL

Electronic tags have been around for a long time elsewhere in the world. Qantas Q tags have been around since 2011, for example.

lotophage··on Do breastfed children have higher IQs? The answer is annoyingly hard to uncover
Is all breast milk made equal? Is it not possible that some mothers milk is deficient for some reason (diet, genetics, health issues etc)? It's not usually tested after a child is born.
lotophage··on Uber faces 550-passenger lawsuit over alleged rape and assault in US
> The case alleges that the attacks on them are caused by “the toxic-male culture at Uber …

What happened was horrible, but that claim seems like a bit of a stretch. Assuming that Uber did have this culture, would changing the corporate culture have prevented individual driver behavior? I'm not sure that it would have. What happens when the perpetrators are multi-app drivers, does Lyft or whoever get shouldered with some portion of the blame (or credited with mitigating it because of their positive culture)?

lotophage··on Ten Percent of the Brain Myth
I don't doubt that the belief has always existed somewhere; tribes with barely any outside contact, for example. I suspected that the belief was once reserved for a few eccentric crackpots and didn't have the momentum to be a movement until the last decade or so, but maybe I'm wrong. Flat-earth theory probably wasn't the greatest example. I think a "myth" connotes something a bit more innocent than a delusional belief or conspiratorial thinking (I'd call the Loch Ness Monster an myth, but I'd call the "moon-landing was faked" a conspiracy).
lotophage··on Ten Percent of the Brain Myth
Absolutely true, but there somehow seems different quality to them. The myths of old seemed to be little factoids that were not easy to verify and were taken at face value, then just spread until they became "common knowledge". The new ones seem to have an almost religious quality to them. Flat-earthers for example, if someone told me 25 years ago that this would be a thing I would have just laughed.
lotophage··on Ten Percent of the Brain Myth
It's amazing to think how common these sorts of myths used to be before the internet. If you heard something like this and wanted to challenge it, you would have to get on the bus and spend a couple of hours at the library and return with some photocopies. Now you can pull up Wikipedia on your phone.

I'd hate to be on call for that!
lotophage··on Mass frog burial baffles experts at iron age site near Cambridge
My thoughts were along this line too. The village children spent one summer having a daily frog catching competition then chucked them in the pit at the end of each day. Hundreds of years later it's an archeological mystery.

lotophage··on Ask HN: Best place to publish a Haiku, accessible 10k years from now?
This haiku is deep

You will 'get it' in the end

Might take you ten k years though

lotophage··on Ask HN: Best place to publish a Haiku, accessible 10k years from now?
Language itself will likely evolve to be almost indistinguishable from its present form. You may preserve the words but the meanings may drift or be lost. People have to be "taught" how to pronounce Shakespeare and how to understand the puns, and that's only a few hundred years old. It's an interesting problem and I look forward to solutions that will be proposed in these comments.
lotophage··on Forest City, a $100B ghost town in Malaysia
Does everything require an overly simplistic supply and demand explanation? It is by design a prestige development that hopes to attract high worth foreigners. If they start pricing it so that locals can afford it, the value will tank because the riff-raff have been let in and the investors will be up in arms. I'm not saying that I like any of this, but it's a for-profit real estate development, not government funded social housing.
lotophage··on Uber Eats Nationwide Shipping
I assume that they have to be reheated at the destination city before delivery. They may even be cooked there. In Australia several years ago you could get "freshly baked" French croissants from the supermarket. They were actually frozen "parbaked" goods that were cooked on the day.

lotophage··on Plastic-eating enzyme could eliminate billions of tons of landfill waste
Yeah, I've heard that much of the recycling campaigns from the late 80s were actually spearheaded by the plastics industry in what was ultimately a successful attempt to shift blame from the producers to the consumers.
lotophage··on How to get kids to do chores: Does the Maya method work? (2018)
The goal is not to "get kids to do chores" per se, but to raise adults who are self sufficient and self reliant. "Chores" is a bit of a loaded word because I think a lot of people associate it with dread and a sort of low key undeserved punishment, which is certainly not the goal. In this context it is more akin to having a child pass you pegs while you are trying to hang the washing on the line as opposed to parking them in front of a screen or compete for your attention.

Glad that I was reading this on my phone when I blasted coffee out of my mouth laughing. Could have been a more difficult and potentially costlier cleanup if I was reading that on my laptop or desktop.
