Correct, but also, I’d bet there is a lurking tsunami expert here somewhere. Nothing is ever too niche for HN.

Trump seems to genuinely suffer when he loses face. That’s what’s happening here.

The US had a plan for dealing with Iran.

It didn’t have a plan for dealing with Trump.

lostlogin··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
I agreed with the lockdown and still do. I was pointing out that for a lot of us it was far from business-as-usual for a significant chunk of time.
lostlogin··on Nearest Pint
There were about as many golf courses as pubs when I went through there - but that was a while back.

lostlogin··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
I hear people describe their lockdowns and how difficult shopping was, and work, and seeing friends.

That ceased in Auckland, and was policed hard, it was very aggressive.

And the worst part of our 7 day lockdown? The first 3 months.

lostlogin··on Mea Culpa – Dark Hours
At this rate we will need Gruber to do a retraction retraction in order to be more aggressive about the bs he fell into.

> my question is whether the per-story fact checking is equal, or much less.

How could a one man operation have the fact checking machinery of some big paper, eg the NYT? Of course it’s less.

Keep in mind that he usually posts multiple times per weekday.

Trying to get it to open on startup and start containers in a particular order is a little finicky. But the real hell is trying to get it to start containers after the network shares have connected.

I’ve got it working, but compared to doing it in compose, it’s awful.

lostlogin··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
It’s hard to do a blind test on yourself.

But I accidentally ran this test on myself recently and didn’t realise until I got home and found my full cup on the bench.

It was disturbing to know how much I need it.

I’m impressed with that.

I had a Nuc 9 extreme with a 10gb SFP card in it.

It averaged 69w. The Mac Mini I replaced it with uses just under 5w.

A Mini is possible the worst bang for buck. Also, the horror that that is Desktop Docker can’t be over emphasised. I know there are better ways of using Docker on a Mac, but having got something working I can’t face rebuilding it.

Yes.

But also, finding something from within the last hundred years doesn’t say an awful lot about something claimed to have been a closed system for millions of years.

> I have exactly one intel cpu in my house in a NUC I got off eBay and it’s about to be replaced by my M4 mini.

Do some tests pre and post upgrade. It’s ridiculous how efficient the mini is. My power usage is about 1/12 what it was with a Nuc.

Mentioning the recent Chernobyl accident is weird too. Surely an accident from long ago that is expected to be detectable is far more helpful.

All they proved is that nothing had entered since the Chernobyl accident.
