lordwarnut··on I'm not mutable, I'm partially instantiated
I have been going through https://www.ic.unicamp.br/~meidanis/courses/mc336/2009s2/pro...

It starts out pretty easy but gets harder and requires more thought. It has different sections on things like list processing or graph problems.

lordwarnut··on I learned Haskell in just 15 years
Kind of ironically I've enjoyed the 'Write Yourself a Scheme in 48 Hours'[1] which goes over how to write your own Scheme in Haskell. It introduces some of the more interesting monads although I'm not sure how idiomatic it is.

lordwarnut··on New ways we're tackling spammy, low-quality content on Search
Might I suggest the plugin uBlacklist. I use it to block a whole bunch of domains from google search that I don't want to see anymore.

The irony being of course that there are two scenarios.

I really like this post. Thanks for sharing it.

Interesting, I was thinking perhaps it was to hold soft boiled eggs such that it was convenient to dip strips of buttered toast into the yolk.
lordwarnut··on Zoomable, animated scatterplots in the browser that scales over a billion points
I don't suppose you have a link to that game? It sounds interesting and I'd love to learn more.
lordwarnut··on Ask HN: What Is the Lisp “Enlightment”?
The program that can be written is not the eternal program. The script which can be run is not the eternal script.

How does the evaluation of the feasibility of the proposed law work?
lordwarnut··on Infants' sense of pain is recognized, finally (1987)
It's a form of genital mutilation. It would be wrong to call it a non-issue. It is moral one at the least.

I have no issue with consenting adults getting circumcised for what ever reason they want too. A baby, however, cannot possibly consent to such a thing.

lordwarnut··on Ask HN: My client want an agent on my laptop. Is this the new normal?
Why does that sound bad?

I believe that David Graeber was an Anarchist not a Marxist.
lordwarnut··on Europe is in a muddle over ritual slaughter
Well the homogenisation of society is a common aspect of fascist ideologies.
lordwarnut··on The Abolition of Work (2002)
The quote that stands out to me the most is:

Work makes a mockery of freedom. The official line is that we all have rights and live in a democracy. Other unfortunates who aren’t free like we are have to live in police states. These victims obey orders or-else, no matter how arbitrary. The authorities keep them under regular surveillance. State bureaucrats control even the smaller details of everyday life. The officials who push them around are answerable only to higher-ups, public or private. Either way, dissent and disobedience are punished. Informers report regularly to the authorities. All this is supposed to be a very bad thing.

And so it is, although it is nothing but a description of the modern workplace.

lordwarnut··on Looking at the experience of black Britons through an American lens
Well they certainly used racism as an excuse to justify their colonial ambitions. They were conquering for the same reasons any country conquers: money, land, prestige.
