loorinm··on Artist Nan Goldin takes on the billionaire family behind OxyContin
I find this a remarkably accurate description of addiction/withdrawal.

“Take reaponsibility” does absolutely nothing to help, except maybe satisfy the commenter’s obvious need to feel better-than.

A lot of people are born into families of addicts, myself included, and although the substance may change, it really isn’t our fault at all that they we are addicts.

For most people it takes a big, dedicated support team of other people to get clean. “taking responsibility” is a good start, but it really isn’t enough.

loorinm··on “The Problem Child of Seasonal Flu”: Beware This Winter’s Virus
Unfortunately no mandatory sick leave will affect the majority of workers who are contingent, temporary, or otherwise even more at risk of losing pay and firing if they(we) go home sick. I had H3N2 last week and I came to work because I was told I risked being fired if I didn’t. Everyone in the office hated it but I didn’t want to lose my job.
loorinm··on “The Problem Child of Seasonal Flu”: Beware This Winter’s Virus
The catch to this is there is substantial reason to believe that non-exposure can actually make you more subsceptible later on, so it’s better to just get the flu to stay on pace with antigens for future strains.
loorinm··on The Joys of Victimhood (1989)
Dude is gay. No one is this tortured or obsessed unless they themselves are repressing their own - to use his revelatory and judgy phrase - “abnormal apetites”. How people can mistake this wordy tortured coming-out essay as “a credible view” is beyond strange.

Also his obsession with victim-shaming? He is a victim and won’t allow himself his victim feelings. The fact that this article was published in a major publication shows how problematic “real journalism” can be. That’s my main takeaway from the 3 paragraphs I could stomach.

loorinm··on Too Much Music: A Failed Experiment in Dedicated Listening
Maybe I’m projecting, but it seems obvious to me that the author’s root problem is that he isn’t producing any music.

Of course, I’m assuming he isn’t based on no mention of it in the article.

The natural result of observing and loving something is the desire to copy it. That’s what humans do.

Such a lopsided preference for consumption over production suggests to me that the author has some extreme repression, fear, etc. around making music, and that energy is being channeled into this weird need to consume and judge other people’s music.

I’d probably be this way if I didn’t make anything too.

Just my 2 cents.

loorinm··on Portugal’s radical drug policy is working. Why hasn’t the world copied it?
I never comment on HN, but I figured out how to log in just so I could express my enthusiasm for how valuable the above comment is.

I wish everyone in every debate ever could read what is written above. People not doing the above is the one major problem with public discourse today.

loorinm··on Stefan Molyneux on Universal Basic Income
I don't buy the whole "Raising taxes on the rich will cause general prices to go up and inflation". He provides no explanation for why that is true. Countries such as Denmark tax the rich heavily and do not have those effects.
loorinm··on GuriVR – Describe your VR experience and the editor will do the rest
is there a way to see what others have made?
loorinm··on It only took 36 hours for these students to solve Facebook's fake news problem
Yeah that trend is great. AI officially has zero meaning at this point.
loorinm··on The Fall of Big Data
Yes. This is exactly what happened and what so many liberals (myself included) don't want to hear but have to come to terms with. It's in our best interest to share the prosperity we enjoy with those less fortunate, or we create a breeding ground for anger and ignorance that will come back to truly make our lives hell.

Same thing applies in the middle east where we've bred terrorism from poverty.

This is our collective fault. We can't ignore them anymore. The only way forward is to empathize with our fellow human beings whose suffering is real and whose anger is dangerous.

loorinm··on Show HN: Mest – Place to talk with those you disagree with
Great idea, trying to use it but it seems broken. Chat cuts off after two lines. Have tried it about 10 times. Please fix?
loorinm··on This Indiegogo campaign promotes child neglect. Here's my open letter to the CEO
Uh, no.

Sending a kid to a store has absolutely nothing to do with routinely relying on an electronic device to manage all of their daily activities.

Kids COULD do a lot of things. They might be fine living alone in a box and learning everything online, for example. But that doesn't make it a good idea.

I'm actually glad you bring up Japanese culture. Japan has several forms of institutionalized child abuse, as well as a culture with extreme conformism and too much social pressure for anyone to be vocal about dissent. So yeah, probably a product of the way kids are raised. Also, with the extreme xenophobia and non-acceptance of outsiders, it's probably safer on the streets there than an average US city.

Providing your kid with day-to-day love and attention isn't really related to whether they leave the house or not.

loorinm··on Is there a company that sells meal planning?
no but they sell you the food too. I want to just get the food from the cheap mexican market near my house.
loorinm··on Is there a company that sells meal planning?
HAHAHA
loorinm··on Is there a company that sells meal planning?
yeah that looks like the right idea but that site looks 20 years old. is it even still working?
loorinm··on I quit Instagram
uh. maybe twitter is planning on releasing their own auto-tagger based on computer vision?
loorinm··on Coding is Over
thanks camgunz. Like I said in my post, I knew this would be very unsettling for many people who have built their lives and identities on coding.
loorinm··on Ask HN: Would you use a silent coworking space?
Universities have the luxury of collecting huge tuition, tax money, and endowments to support these facilities.

Being one person with minimal investment, I doubt I'll be able to start out at that level..
