I saw someone familiar walking around my neighborhood. The view from my window is partially obscured by the garden. So as I turn my gaze, I see a man wearing a hat loosely. The hat was positioned far back on his head, exposing a protruding forehead whose silhouette was amplified by a receding hairline. As the man walked by, it looked like a bald mounds pubis floating along the balcony. The things one can see from their home, right? Who the fuck needs social media when looking for a good laugh?

> Give some people an inch and they’ll take a mile.

Even if the company is in microservices, and there is no way they need a mile of clearance, they'll take it anyways. Their greed outsizes their Lilliputian muster.

lookagain··on Ask HN: Are there recorded instances of people being framed through hacking?
Some crimes are trivial to commit. Walking away unscathed from committing the crime is far harder than one might think. Consequences are inevitable, one way or another.
lookagain··on Ask HN: Are there recorded instances of people being framed through hacking?
I can foresee one answer to the question 'why would someone do this?'. It's called a potent cocktail of vengeance and self-destruction. People who self-medicate through harming others are always looking for a way to escalate. Look up the story of UGNazi, and don't skip the ending.
lookagain··on Code May Be Elegant
I like this article. It makes many good points. The saving grace of the situation is that developers have all the time in the world, so try everything out at the buffet, one at a time.

lookagain··on Ask HN: Who’s been laid off and what’s your strategy for seeking new employment
Not the user you directed your question to, but it depends on the outcome you want. I know people who only interview at one or two places between jobs because they're so particular about what they want. I also know people who are over-employed. Juggling multiple interviews at once should come easily to these people. Theoretically, I could see someone juggling 15-20 sets of interviews at one time. So pick your poison.

Every piece of software relies to some degree on other software. Similarly, every person relies to some degree on other people. As long as you don't find yourselves in a race to the bottom of the barrel, things should be okay.

> "it's undeniable that the road to greatness is filled with incredible suffering." - Nah

Pardon my inquisitive behavior, but a quick peek at your comment history shows that you have spent some time thinking about pedagogy. If your comments can be taken at face value, would you care to elaborate on the path to progress within a field? Surely, a person can't just wish themselves better.

lookagain··on Ask HN: How Compare Online Communities?
> how can any community become less wrong?

While seeking to be less wrong is a worthwhile goal, it is but one of many things to pursue. The question arises about why does a community need to be less wrong. What happens if you don't course correct? Sometimes, it's better just to let things happen.

lookagain··on Ask HN: What supplements did you take that have improved your productivity?
While I am happy to see people improve their lives, I am absolutely heartbroken by people like Gwyneth Paltrow exploiting her fame to peddle supplements. Her basic business model leverages the absence of affordable health care to Americans. For example, impoverished women who can't afford fertility treatments might spend a couple hundred dollars buying some over-priced trinket that grants magical healing powers to the consumer.

Whatever you're going through, I wouldn't discourage you from your coping mechanism. I do hope someone in your life can sit you down compassionately and explain that there are no silver-bullet solutions to your problem.

lookagain··on Ask HN: How Compare Online Communities?
In your post, you say you want a biased community, but that seems incongruous with the rest of the items you're looking for in a community. Perhaps you meant "unbiased" -- could you clarify this?

There is a word in sanskrit satya, which means truth-seeking. Satya is one of a handful of ideas forming the basis of a practice called the eight limbs of yoga. The idea is that thought precedes action, and if you don't clear your mind, you undermine your yoga practice. Put another way, you don't receive the full benefits of yoga if you're distracted by competing desires. I think truth-seeking is an incredibly worthwhile goal.

Having said that, I have never heard of a perfectly informed person let alone a community. No choice is neutral, therefore everything a person says or thinks or does is opinionated.

However, I must admit my own ignorance. If you continue to seek such a community, I would be interested in hearing the outcome of such a search. Maybe I could learn something too :) Thank you for sharing!

lookagain··on Show HN: DevArmory – A Switchblade for Devs. Would love feedback
Video games weren't historically about war, but over time, a large portion of modern day video games have become first- or third-person shooters like Call of Duty. If you gamify development, then I understand the re-application of a military theme to the dev-tools space.

As always, I'm so keen to see what hot takes people have on existing problem spaces. I really, really like the idea of attacking a problem with everything you've got before you lose your nerve! Unleash your best war cry before crushing your enemies! I send you off with good tidings!

Garbage in -> garbage out. Thank you for your humility. You acknowledge that you're good enough to be dedicated but not good enough to be impressive. If you re-use your methods, then you would only be creating devs who are again only going to be dedicated not impressive.

Any biography of GOAT athletes I've read inevitably depict tremendous personal sacrifice. Whether you call grueling schedules, pushing themselves nearly to their physical and psychological breaking point, as "hustle culture", it's undeniable that the road to greatness is filled with incredible suffering.

We would all like to wish ourselves to greatness without putting in the effort that goes with it. Unfortunately, that is not how the world works. Having said that, while positive thinking only goes so far, it's a good salve for anyone in dire straits. In other words, positive thinking won't solve your problems, but it might make you feel momentarily better. Best of luck.
