lolpython··on Why doctors pay millions in fees that could be spent on care
Btw, you’re missing [3]
lolpython··on If we want a shift to walking we need to prioritize dignity
Greyhound is a really bad bus operator, and they are the only option for a lot of routes. But on more competitive routes like NYC to Maine or NYC to upstate cities you get much better operators. I’ve had very positive experiences riding on those corridors with OurBus and Concorde Coach Lines. Clean seats, quiet passengers and on time departure. So it’s not bad everywhere in the US.
lolpython··on Data breach exposes personal information of 4k Roblox developers
The majority of the independent developers on the platform are adults. Recall that creators can make money on Roblox.

> The majority of Roblox’s creators are now over 18, and the company thinks they are ready to build more mature worlds on the platform.

lolpython··on Commuters prefer origin to destination transfers
It’s an autocorrect typo, and if we are ruling on Alon trivia, Alon doesn’t go by “him” last I checked.
lolpython··on Commuters prefer origin to destination transfers
I read Alton‘a blog all the time and just didn’t understand the linked blog post at all. I think it was just poorly written.

lolpython··on Lawsuit accuses DoorDash of charging iPhone users more than others
I think OP was just using the definition of "class" as in a larger group of people that could file a lawsuit.

Where is this?
lolpython··on SSHD: Random boot time relinking, OpenBSD
IIRC they pass around patches on email before committing to CVS. That workflow affords a bit more flexibility.
lolpython··on Britishvolt: UK battery startup collapses into administration
For non-UK folks: "administration" is similar to bankruptcy in the US.

lolpython··on Google Maps launches Street View in India
Really excited to see how this affects the Geoguessr[0] meta. This will be up there with Russia, Brazil, Turkey, USA, and Canada in that it can really make or break competitive games. Since the countries are so large and it can be difficult to tell which region you're in

lolpython··on Tell HN: Upwork has an impersonation problem
Sorry to hear about that problem. Maybe you could put a warning about the impersonator on your LinkedIn bio.
lolpython··on New Arizona law makes it illegal to film within 8 feet of police
A fish eye lens works fine. That is what body cameras use.
lolpython··on Why is life expectancy in the US lower than in other rich countries? (2020)
> If US data were broken down by state, we'd probably see life expectancy in some states more like rich northwestern European countries, and some states more like poor southeastern European countries.

This is true.

- New York State life expectancy is 81.4 and the Netherlands life expectancy is 81.41

- Hawaii life expectancy is 82.3 and Spain life expectancy is 82.33

- Mississippi life expectancy is 74.9 and Lithuania life expectancy is 74.93

lolpython··on Incremental Builds for Haskell with Bazel
I migrated a mid-size polyglot project from Makefiles to Bazel and C++ was a large component of the project.

Some obstacles:

1. Building with QT5 MOC & UI files. There is a great library[0] for it but it has hardcoded paths to the QT binaries and header files assuming a system-wide installation. I had to patch the rule to point to our QT location. Then it worked fine.

2. There is no rule to build a fully static library[1]. Since we were shipping a static library to clients via our Makefile system, that was somewhat annoying.

3. We were using system links like `$PROJECT_ROOT/links/GCC/vX.Y.Z/ -> /opt/gcc/...` to point to all the build tools, but these didn't work in Bazel I think because it required absolute paths for any binaries it calls. We ended up putting them in a .bazelrc but we would need a different one for Windows and Linux.

4. Not good integration with IDEs

5. (edit) The Bazel toolchain system is confusing and I couldn't understand it after reading all its docs

Ultimately we did not keep using Bazel because we were building Python binaries and py_binary was too slow on Windows. And we didn't have enough time to write a PyInstaller rule.

lolpython··on Get Paid to Contribute to Urllib3
I find the language "Paid: $___" confusing because it is past tense and reads like the task has been completed. I suggest changing it to "Will Pay" or "Bounty"

> Gnome's Wayland implementation is much better then KDE at this moment

Agreed, with a caveat— Gnome's Mutter compositor for Wayland has bugs. It does not support server side rendered window decorations while KDE does. This means that the title bars for Alacritty[0] terminal emulator and the mpv[1] video player are ugly and not so functional. This is an intentional decision by the GNOME team[2]. Also the screen locks while watching videos on mpv because Mutter does not support the idle-inhibit protocol, although work is currently being done on this[3].

lolpython··on So I took a corporation to arbitration
The terms that come to mind are stonewalling and kafkaesque.
lolpython··on An autonomous car in SF blocked a fire truck responding to an emergency
I've seen with my own eyes an Argo AI car not pulling to the side for a Pittsburgh police car in downtown Pittsburgh on Liberty Ave. The police car had its lights blaring and was forced to go around via the oncoming lane. It was awkward because every other car on the road made way for the officer, but Argo AI did not.
