lolc··on Photos capture the breathtaking scale of China's wind and solar buildout
Fusion will be its own extinction event as things go. At our development level, if we develop fusion, we'll have to live underground after boiling the oceans to generate crypto tokens and undress videos.

The asteroid is just science unlikely fiction.

lolc··on Iran has now been offline for 96 hours
The general idea is that Iran would be more effective as a regional power if it wasn't ruled by islamists. And that at least the current government of Israel likes incompetent neighbours that make them look good.

Not a difficult argument in my view. Unless you're stuck believing what they say instead of observing what they do.

lolc··on Ireland fast tracks Bill to criminalise harmful voice or image misuse
Have you read the bill or is the quote the only thing you're going on?
lolc··on Estonian volunteers struggling to protect Wikipedia from Russian propaganda
Help me out here, the article starts from a premise I don't follow: Eventually the state of Estonia was restored and thus Soviet rule can de discounted. Many must have wished not living in the Soviet Union, but why should the eventual winners get to revise history?
lolc··on Seven diabetes patients die due to undisclosed bug in Abbott's glucose monitors
As a current user of Juggluco I agree that its usability is bad. Easily the worst from the apps I'm using.

I actually blame Abbott for there not being a better app. People fear litigation from Abbott and don't work on any.

lolc··on Seven diabetes patients die due to undisclosed bug in Abbott's glucose monitors
I'm using Openaps with Omnipods. Nice not having to deal with proprietary apps.

Currently using Libre as sensor, luckily without their shit app. Dexcom was easier to set up.

lolc··on Satellites reveal heat leaking from largest US cryptocurrency mining center
I do get utility out of aluminium.
lolc··on Believe the Checkbook
An often repeated point on this forum: A lot of our comms are text. You don't want stall and lose attention to comms. Makes sense to train and have the flow on auto.
lolc··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
Ahaha are you trolling for entitled gamers? Yeah wouldn't want the real world having to face those. No worries: as long as there are people willing to drop money into expensive gear, somebody will sell it.
lolc··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
I found the local translation feature nice on a few occasions.
lolc··on What is the nicest thing a stranger has ever done for you?
You might like reading Darwin's Catedral by David Sloan Wilson. It's a recent take on the old idea of group selection, a theory that attempts to explain the human drive to cooperate. In that telling, it would take some form of religion to coopt that drive and allow human groups to grow large and be nice to strangers. Or not nice when they're seen as out group. I find this explains a lot about us.
lolc··on South Carolina sees 'alarming' increase in measles cases, with 280 in quarantine
I think the main reason is the people who experienced the time before vaccines are dead. Vaccines were always scary but back then the people could see that they prevented bad outcomes. My grandmother grew up with kids crippled by the polio epidemic!

People today just don't know anymore how scary measles is. We lost that knowledge thanks to the success of vaccines!

lolc··on Wave of (Open Street Map) Vandalism in South Korea
Wikipedia is fully captured by vandalism?
lolc··on The state of Schleswig-Holstein is consistently relying on open source
You're saying that a state can upstream patches with planted backdoors. Thruth is, this is possible in all software. It's not specific to state-sponsored open source software. So your scenario is a reality whether you want it or not. And open source is not particularily vulnerable either. People forget this.

Now a lot of people would be angry if my state decided to spend money on security flaws. I imagine an elected representative try to explain how they wanted to misspend funds allocated to improve software and plant flaws instead. That would not go down well here or in Germany. Try to hire people for this in Germany and see how long you last till your little op is public.

lolc··on Wave of (Open Street Map) Vandalism in South Korea
Ask Wikipedia how they are dealing with this shit. Openstreetmap is a rather unlikely target, so it's news.
lolc··on A new Little Prince museum has opened its doors in Switzerland
> And outside France too!

Soleure, that's the French name of the city where the museum opened. The place might just be in France if you don't look too close.

lolc··on Sunsetting Supermaven
It doesn't look near instant like Supermaven because the default delay before suggestions is 3 s.

https://kilo.ai/docs/basic-usage/autocomplete

lolc··on Sunsetting Supermaven
I was interested but looks like it's only available for Macos.
lolc··on Make product worse, get money
I read the comment about Tinder and Tiktok being in competition differently: To me they said that both Tinder and Tiktok are in competition over eyeballs.

Meaning for example that if Tinder shows me profiles I find less attractive, I'm more likely to churn to Tiktok. So Tinder will show me profiles of people I have no hope of meeting, to keep me engaged nonetheless.

lolc··on Diabetes Treatment May Deliver Insulin Through a Skin Cream
Yeah could be useful for basal delivery. But I wonder how variable it will be. Temperature, moisture, rub-off, other lotions, could all hinder the delivery. Don't want additional variability on a medication this sensitive to dosage.

The biggest danger I see that it's a deadly cream. Untrained people are unlikely to inject insulin by mistake. With a cream, they might just rub some on.

lolc··on Welcome, the entire land – "Hello, world" in hieroglyphics (2009)
Funny I have a shirt that reads "Prince of Susa" to the three people (not me) who can read Linear Elam.

Edit: To see the sequence you can paste "" into the corpus search at https://center-for-decipherment.ch/tool/#script=elam

lolc··on Ask HN: How do you get over the fear of sharing code?
Haha I've had instructors noting with a smile that my code was "good enough for others to copy". In the end I learned a bunch, also about people. More than if I hadn't shared.
lolc··on An ex-Intel CEO's mission to build a Christian AI: Hasten the return of Christ
I wonder how these Gloo guys want to serve a fractured user base. People make fun of Google generating images with diversified Nazis, but imagine serving flocks that have these diverse expectations. Is it going to tell people to stone someone, or slap their kids? Probably not. But where do they draw the line? Domestic violence? Too bad divorce is not an option. Or is it?

Going to be a wild fun ride talking to these indoctrinated bots. Like browsing the Conservapedia of old.

lolc··on Library creates double bound copy of 1984
Double good when double bound!
lolc··on Scripts I wrote that I use all the time
I've seen a few dead posts where there was an innocent misunderstanding or wrong assumption. In those cases it would have been beneficial to keep the post visible and post a response, so that readers with similarly mistaken assumptions could have seen a correction. Small minority of dead posts though. They can be vouched for actually but of course this is unlikely to happen.

I agree that most dead posts would be a distraction and good to have been kept out.

lolc··on Claude Skills are awesome, maybe a bigger deal than MCP
I like comments about intent, about the why. The generators are really bad at intent, they just write dross comments about the how. The worst part is how they're not accustomed to comments about intent and tend to drop those!

Say I wrote a specific comment why this fencepost here needs special consideration. The agent will come through and replace that reasoned comment with "Add one to index".

lolc··on Claude Skills are awesome, maybe a bigger deal than MCP
Prompting to remove redundant comments works quite well, but I dislike the extra step.
lolc··on Swiss glaciers have shrunk by a quarter since 2015, study says
If you like to nerd out on data, the GLAMOS website publishes a catalog of all glaciers in Switzerland, with measurements for the larger ones:

https://www.glamos.ch/en/factsheet#/B36-26

Some years the glacier count goes down, because a glacier disappears. Some years the glacier count goes up, when a glacier shrinks and splits in two.

lolc··on Tesla investors against Musk's billion-euro package: Board criticised
The weird thing to me is how investors can hold shares and vote against this outrageous compensation. Because the valuation of Tesla is tied to the belief in a glorious future as told by the main character. Either you believe in that future and hodl, or you got the hell out yesterday. Is what I would assume.

The letter says that these investors have no confidence in how the show is run. Why haven't they sold? What value do they see?

lolc··on Buyers of Radio Shack, Pier 1 brands accused of running $112M Ponzi scheme
I think it's the other way around: There are many fraud cases like his. We only hear about this one because he is notorious.
