Didn’t know that, that sounds great.

logotype··on Anti-Interdiction on the Librem 5 USA
Besides the security implication that mschuster mentioned there is also: misleading marketing, if a product is marketed as Made in USA it should consist of a majority of parts made locally.

My product, currently in prototype stage, is made locally here in London. I go to great lengths to ensure that (even down to raw material level where possible). It’s not economical, but that’s not why I’m doing it. I’m doing it because I believe in it. Way too many known and unknown companies just offshore manufacturing. Globalisation is bad. Support the local industry and make better things here!

logotype··on China’s new spy army has invaded – and we’re not fighting back
Fundamentally incompatible values (I lived there for 10+ years). CCP is evil, truly. It has nothing to do with sinophobia.
logotype··on Anti-Interdiction on the Librem 5 USA
One thing to note about the Librem 5 USA version. The case is made in China. I’ve asked them for years to make the case in the US but nothing yet. That’s the only thing preventing me from purchasing it.

Nice, thanks for sharing!
logotype··on A man who uploaded 2M videos to YouTube [video]
Free storage space. I wonder how much it costs for Google to store all those 2M videos.

Here’s an idea. Encode your data/backups into a video (it’ll display as noise but that doesn’t matter). Store on YouTube for free instead of paying for terabytes on Google Drive.

logotype··on Ask HN: Trending Content on TikTok, Twitter etc. looks completely off to me
This is why algorithms, filter bubbles and “AI” in its current state is a very very bad thing. It can be gamed as evidenced. The complicity of the platforms is beyond me, why aren’t they DOING something about it? Don’t expect anything from TikTok though - it’s a chinese company and no doubt that some user information and user behaviour information is being exfiltrated to the CCP. Also their filter bubble is tuned for soft power and show CCP in a good light which is despicable. Don’t even register on that platform! Twitter for example, lacks any incentive to do something about it since any user growth is a good thing in their view but detrimental to the platform as a whole. Misinformation and state-sponsored mass networks of fake users is the norm these days and it’s sad.
logotype··on Asian Boss planted deep blue YouTuber and pretended he was a 'man on the street'
It is absolutely without any doubt happening on HN and I have previously been banned trying to point it out.
logotype··on Misbrands
Never understood why people put stickers on their laptops, to me it seems like a cargo cult. Oh, you’re using this trendy library? Are you a brogrammer or a programmer? Why is libraries and technologies trendy anyway, so much time has been wasted building something using the wrong tool for the job. It also ruins the design of the laptop, just like a phone case does. Maybe I’m just old.

That domain must have been expensive…

logotype··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Mahlkönig PEAK. It’s a coffee grinder, the build quality is really, really good. Super solid, and heavy.
logotype··on Is China's catch-up growth over?
@dang, why is there zero effort in minimising misinformation on HN? I am SICK of these CCP shills.

logotype··on Ask HN: What Toaster Are You Using?
+1 on the Dualit Original. Built like a tank!
logotype··on Ask HN: What Toaster Are You Using?
Dualit, made in England. Beautiful design and sturdy, built to last. I promised myself to NOT buy anything made in China, in all cases where it is possible.

logotype··on I nearly lost the Lightroom catalog with of all my photos
Important backups should be stored in a variety of ways. I store my backups on multiple external HDD’s (solid state and spinning disks) in redundancy. Using multiple filesystems (ext4, and exFAT). I do use ZFS for daily/active storage but not for backups. Besides that I also store the data in AWS S3 and a duplicate in Backblaze B2. These solutions are scalable. iCloud/Google Drive is good if you only have 2TB or less.

Just store the raw files directly in a regular file tree structure and avoid any kind of catalog/index/db file.

I do find ZFS very interesting but in practical use it has been trouble working with, getting weird errors when trying to remove a vdev.

I work in finance. About 5 years ago I started building a FIX library on my spare time, out of curiosity. Over the years it has been countless fin tech start-ups as well as big companies reaching out to me about the library, suggesting fixes and features. Since then I have long lost the interest in the technology which enables connectivity to financial exchanges to automate trades, but I keep working on the library for the benefit of others and just the joy of creating something. But what’s the actual impact? Enabling companies getting richer? Greed?

Data is updated daily and sourced from Hong Kong Immigration Department.
logotype··on HK media erase their archives amid rising arrests
Warning, account associated with CCP.
logotype··on How the Hell Are We OK with China?
Stop buying products made in China. I personally made that decision years ago. Support local manufacturers as much as you can. What CCP does is disgusting.
logotype··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
I built fixparser, a Node/browser library for parsing FIX messages. https://www.npmjs.com/package/fixparser

I built it because at the time there weren’t any good FIX library written in JS/TS and because I wanted to learn how it works.

logotype··on History of Techno
I grew up with Drumcode. It was quite common with forest raves here in Sweden, basically a huge sound system in some remote place and people dancing over night. And at one point there were also some organisers who rented a whole cruise liner, with people like Adam Beyer and Thomas Krome DJ’ing. My favourites include: surgeon, headroom, the advent, invexis, chris liebing, planetary assault systems, mark broom, pounding grooves and richie hawtin. Then I fell into the rabbit hole of more experimental music such as autechre and have been stuck there ever since
