What do you think?

log0··on How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat
I used to drink soda a lot younger then. I no longer drink them aside from using a can every half a year to do cooking (for the effects, not taste), and that was in 2015.

In fact, if you quit soda (and drastically reduce sugar intake), you'll find sugar and those soda stuff very overwhelmingly. At most a sip. The claim is not hard to resonate with.

log0··on Ask HN: How did you learn about stocks and the market?
Curious question to all you investment experts. The SPY/VOO guys did not improve since 2015 and even now. Proponents of the SPY/VOO are based on the 2008... which has been rising until 2015. So how is investing into index fund ETFs still relevant today? Just earn on dividends?
log0··on I spent the last 15 years trying to become an American and failed
Just to clarify in case people still have the impression that Canada is good for immigration: Maybe Canada is better than America for immigration, the experience is getting worse.

After the new immigration minister came up in July 2013, the government has changed policies to make immigration slow and the path to citizenship much harder.

1) A Labour Market Opinion (LMO), which is required before a work visa, itself used to take 6 weeks in 2008. This process now takes about 6 months (my case, which is not too slow) to 1 year (another friend's case, and plenty of people in forums). For the work visa, add another 2-6 months on top of it, and then you have to apply the temporary resident visa.

2) Path to citizenship (having work visa => permanent residence => citizenship) used to take a total of 4 years (roughly), now is changed to 1 + 2 + 4 (7 years), a significantly longer time frame.

I get the feeling that Canada is changing its opinion of welcoming immigrants.

Disclaimer: Used to live in Canada, but have left.

The community in Shanghai has grown more vibrant these years. Though, few people tend to join the community (those recurring faces don't really count) actively but it's growing, slowly.
log0··on Issue 8788 - Every day around 9 AM Brussels time, huge drop in GAE performance
Multiple comments mentioned that this occurs in HRD as well.
log0··on VPN access being disabled in China
Just go google for the news, one of the latest victim is the families of Guangcheng Chen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chen_Guangcheng), whose family members gets sued for protecting himself (as "attacking ferociously), etc.

And take a look at the whereabouts of human rights lawyers at the sensitive dates.

You can't miss that.

log0··on Ask HN: Am I the only Developer who's turned down offers to become a Tech Lead?
You are not alone, though I'm not one, but taking more responsibilities could mean more business trips, etc, which would contradict your list of priorities such as "being with your family more and watch your 1 year old kid grow". Some of my friends have taken a very conscious choice to NOT get promoted.

Another good example is to keep working in the coding, rather than spending more time in people. This is pretty OK in US (assuming you're in), but much less viable in China in general, where most people expects you to be managing people than developing.

log0··on Ask HN: How bad is the decision to work as a co-founder without legal contracts?
Right. The point is whether someone would register the company only after revenue starts pumping in, which looks odd to me now.
log0··on Ask HN: How bad is the decision to work as a co-founder without legal contracts?
Thank you Grellas. It is really insightful and informative advice, and immensingly helpful for me to think more.

I will incorporate your suggestions and guideline into my decision. Thank you!

log0··on Ask HN: How bad is the decision to work as a co-founder without legal contracts?
It seems it's an overall very negative position to be in, aggregrating all the replies.

thanks. I think I need to re-consider again very very seriously.

log0··on Ask HN: How bad is the decision to work as a co-founder without legal contracts?
This looks to me a likely and very miserable position to be in, and embarrassing.
log0··on Ask HN: How bad is the decision to work as a co-founder without legal contracts?
Hi ctb9,

No, I don't take it rude. It's ok. Thanks.

All of the involved people are Chinese in China. I am sure the law differs but the actual smarts might share common attributes.

log0··on Ask HN: How bad is the decision to work as a co-founder without legal contracts?
Hi grellas.

I have a question I hope you may help answer. Roughly how many percentile in the number of startup cases do have formal legal documentation?

log0··on Ask HN: How bad is the decision to work as a co-founder without legal contracts?
Thanks grellas. This is really great advice. I read your article. Really good one. I am aware legal actions seem to be less practical, and a bad direction towards and position to be in. And I agree it is a high risk, that so much I can sensed it.

Thanks keltecp11. I am still thinking.

log0··on Joel on Software: Exploding Offer Season
Truly. The converse is also true, it has got companies into trouble when these companies offer great opportunities ( names, tasks, relationship, etc ) to students, these students or their professors start to get really cheesy...

nasty stuffs.. IP, lots of companies/people learnt their lessons.

log0··on Ask YC: Do I need to have breadth on accounting and laws?
Yes. Thanks a lot. I will think about it.

And don't worry, I will digest the information and decide myself, and not just directly dupe it into my brain. Thanks a lot. =)

log0··on Ask YC: Do I need to have breadth on accounting and laws?
Well, hehehehe I know what you mean. But I am just trying to get a sense of things, it's always better to protect yourself in case. You know, these things I've heard can really cause a financial ruin to one's life.
log0··on Ask YC: Do I need to have breadth on accounting and laws?
I see. If I am to start, what would be common ways for self-learners? And yes you are right, I don't think I am financed to pay an accountant at early stage yet. Well... it's all just thinking right now. =)

I understand the systems in China will be quite different, hence I am only asking for general advice.

log0··on Ask YC: Do I need to have breadth on accounting and laws?
>>ErrantX

I am China-based. I assume I do not have a friend that can do the work, and after all it seems a friend who will do cheap is very likely a close friend, right?

That is great that your father is someone who has experience. I am walking my own path. Do you have any titles to recommend?

I do not know if I will get bored of those manager things, and I have never did it before. But then, I felt there is a need to do it sooner or later, if we are to start anything.

>>Ram1024

I am trying to storm things out with a friend of mine. We are both developers. No actual things coming out yet, but I believe if both of us are not having ideas of how these things work, there's going to be a pain afterwards. I just want to get some breadth in advance.

You are right, think it loud.

One of the questions we are troubled at is : if we failed and decided to shutdown the startup we are trying, what if an agreement of 1 year payment is signed, how can we get rid of liabilities and not be sued?

--- Please pardon my unclear questioning as I am still not familiar with the details of how things work. Thanks.

log0··on Ask YC: Why do people share on social websites (like Youtube, Digg, Reddit, YC)?
I have been quite an addict in fields like blogs, online games, forums and the like. The desire to withdraw could have been strong at those times, but it is almost impossible to do so as those who experienced that.

Even now I still am addicted to blogs. And it makes so little sense not to discontinue should visitors come no more. In fact, it's the reason why the blog is in partial apathy.

Over time, I believe it is the social networking : "connecting people". Or in more concrete terms it is... the ability to announce your presence, as well as offering you things that would not be possible or not easy to achieve in reality. The web makes these possible. Like the blogs for life and a place to express your views without a column or a book, the video sharing you can share your videos, imaging sites where you can share your photos, getting to know friends and lie tremendously with much less fear being exposed ( not quite the case as of a decade, in my opinion, as privacy problem arises ).

It has something to do with making something possible and easier, and most importantly to identify yourself.
