localhoster··on Gemini 4 Argon
Can you pls fix Gemini? It's a nightmare to use and it sometimes confused the language i talk with it.

I don't know how they eval me. Maybe they eval usage and maybe they don't. I just know I feel uncomfortable to sit next to him sometimes
localhoster··on There's no point at which turning your brain off will work
Not a big fan of him,but he was a dev before and it was a nightmare working with him as a dev.
localhoster··on There's no point at which turning your brain off will work
Same. My team lead sits near me. He keeps checking if I'm using claude, or when we talk he pushes me to use claude.

It's have gotten to the point that I wanted to work on something manually, so I booked a room in the office. Just to not be at my desk, because I'm afraid my claude usage will be reflected in my performance review.

localhoster··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
Neither do I. And we are not even at the 10x they so eagarly wanting. Nearly 3x and that's assuming every new MR matters.

I think its a combination of phycosis, detachment from the codebase, and weak critical thinking

localhoster··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
I have said it in some prev threads but the majority of my workplaces code is written by ai today, and it's not looking good.

All implemention decisions are largely decided by claude these days.

We have so many useless tests, so many repetitive code, Every change, even few lines long will trigger 25-50 additional files changes just because everything is so horribly written.

I have heard this was the case before ai, but it got so much worse.

At the end, I believe it comes down to 3 things: care - which before ai you had to have at least some care. Strong leadership - the ai psychosis spreads like a desease in our csuite. Ownership - there is none, every interaction you have about something starts with "but claude thinks that or says this"

I wish we could go back.

I honestly feel that all those big ai companies think AI will long term harm humanity, but not their ai.

localhoster··on The Vibe Tax
I believe software will go the same road as the cloth industry went. From quality cloth that holds for years, to shit quality cloth that look good but doesnt hold more than few month.

Yet, we are being sold that this is _the way weve all been waiting for_ ? what?!

localhoster··on The Vibe Tax
Most, if not all, of the code in the company I work in is written by AI. Our tests are useless. We have tests that make sure that mongoose schemas are creating the collections defined in them. We have tests that check that zod shcemas parse objects currently. Every PR, even if 1 line change, will drag 25 file changes because our tests are so ad-hoc, so verbose, and so incompatible with each other. Imagine how the codebase is looking... This is a badge of incompetence for the company I work with, and prob to the entire tech world.

The funny part is? This makes our managers and investors proud, every PR is bigger, we make x3 more PRs (wheres the promised x10).

When they say this is the death of software engineering, this is what they mean.

localhoster··on Asana cleared 5 years of engineering work in 2 weeks with Codex
You see, I call bs on that. Not on the part that agents are an accelerator, they might be, but at the part that it was a 5 year project.

We engineers, had the power to dictate how our days will look, and we were able to give ballooned timelines to give us room to braeth.

This has changed. The power is no longer in our hands, for good or bad.

I suspect it as a two month project without agents. Max.

localhoster··on Delta
I assume they gonna have pull us a "arc" rag pull.

Zed is going to die 'cause they cant capitalize on it, delta is going to be sold to investors, and then zed is gonnabe closed sourced 'cause now they need it as the engine for this hot mess.

Perfect! Luckily I sticked with Vim!

localhoster··on 2x, not 10x: coding with LLMs in 2026
When I approach a new area or task I first explore it, by hand, and implement, by hand, the task. This way, I get a deeper understanding and it gives me some momentum to llm the rest of the related tasks. Till I loose enough grip to "re-dive in" that area and to again, do stuff my hand. Some tasks, I only do by hand, and some tasks, I only use llm for.

Really depends on the task, my the project and on, and honesty, my instrest and availability at the moment.

localhoster··on Scriptc by Vercel: TypeScript-to-Native compiler, no JavaScript engine in binary
Funny to see vercel is loosing all credibility under the influence of AI. Never liked their products anyway, so I believe it's a net positive for the industry :)
localhoster··on How we measured AI writing across arXiv, and where the measurement breaks
I once read a comment on hn that says that ai detection in writing is so hard because text doesn't hold enough information. Now I'm no researcher, but that intuitivly makes sense to me. I mean, apart from the obvious cases, how can you detect ai written text?
localhoster··on Searchable field-level encryption on Supabase with CipherStash
Looking at their website, reading through abit, and seeing the comments here. Guys, this website is entirely ai generated, which might indicate about their product some. Not saying that they are lieing or anything, but expect a wall of text that no one really read through, and expect to (pun intended) cipher out the details.
localhoster··on Does code cleanliness affect coding agents? A controlled minimal-pair study
If we don't write the codebase, we don't write the tests, and the agents are modifying it, what even considered a messy codebase? Too many files? Too little files? Related code spread accros many files? What is considered a messy codebase?

Have you even seen one ever?

Also, not checking if it breaks unrelated tests is wild, good software is written by modifying the "just right" amount of code to get your result.

If you break _unrelated_ tests than you most likely didn't changed the right amount of code.

Idk I call bs.

localhoster··on I do not feel like a programmer anymore
The tiem that took experienced programmers to hand over their entire development process to AI was so remarkably fast, that it got me to believe that there are almost no programmers that enjoyed solving problems.

Once, my teacher in school told me that a software engineer needs to have some sadasim in it, because it will need to enjoy the pain of being stuck on a problem. I no longer believe this is true.

Most people are in it for the money, the status, the comfortable conditions, or maybe because this is the blue collar of the 21st century.

The people who are in it for the love of the game, are very little.

localhoster··on Godot will no longer accept AI-authored code contributions
While I agree with the general message, and wish it will eventually radiate to cooperations as well, it is obviously a decision driven by feelings, not logic.

The idea that you can't trust code that was generated by heavy users of AI, because _they_ don't understand it enough to fix it, is false, because they can use AI to fix it.

In general, I have hard time understanding how one might even block other contributors from using ai.

localhoster··on The Typing Was the Safety Harness
I've felt this from the beginning. But I have yet found. A way to communicate this without sound like "that guy".

Truth is that when you give people a "do-for-me" button they are going to be clicking it like it owes them money, and that there is nothing you can say that will tame people down a bit. The truth is also that most developers are... Mediocre... They have hard time thinking, and have hard time having that hard time. So trying to convince them to go back is like saying to them "become mediocre again". And while with ai they are still mediocre, _they_ don't feel like one.

So here we are, and the only thing we can do is to wave and smile as our train is leaving the station.

localhoster··on Why I'm Forced to Say Farewell: Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass
Not that I care in particular

But claiming that google lost it's "moral compass" just now is a claim only rich people can make because they retire, not quit.

Google is literally the largest, most organized, tracking and profiling company in the world. Which they tend to grow even larger with the rise of LLMs.

Turning a blind eye of that for the opportunity or whatever, and than claim that _just now_ they lost their moral compass, is being a hypocrite.

localhoster··on FPS.cob: A first person shooter in COBOL
We need to start putting guardrails on hn to not allow those esoteric projects to be published. Before ai, it was impressive that a person has that much passion and dedication to go down the rabbit hole, and it usually comes back with some cool anacdotes that are nice to read.

Today, it's shallow, emptied out of the content.

It's not impressive that Claude wrote it, it was impressive if you have written it, OP.
