loa_in_··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
I love maths, but I stumble over concepts being named by a prominent figure's last name and not by some taxonomy.
loa_in_··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
The whole idea behind scam sites marketing is to present an ad that knowledgeable people will find unattractive but gullible people will be lured into. Self selection keeps the based demographic from investigating the scam.

I imagine it hexdumps it and looks for patterns.
loa_in_··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Such speculation is just fear mongering and that is exactly what the daft bullies want.
loa_in_··on Vim's UserGettingBored Autocmd
Making computers understand what concentration means is still decades away despite obvious advances.
loa_in_··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
In my experience with IQ tests involving complete the sequence many of the solutions when I looked up the intent behind them made very little sense to me.

loa_in_··on A 3D fruit fly on macOS desktop powered by the real FlyWire connectome
It won't be confirmed until we record all the stimuli and outputs of a fruit fly's nervous system in normal environment.
loa_in_··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
Fitness also contributes to most common physical tasks becoming trivial, you can literally jump out of bed in the morning if it strikes your fancy.
loa_in_··on Cursor 0day: When Full Disclosure Becomes the Only Protection Left
Agreed, don't train fellow human beings (users) to follow, educate them.

"Make things as simple as possible, but no simpler." - commonly known quote.

We're making things so simple, the users don't get to have a proper chance at learning what's happening. Training people away from giving programs access, makes it opaque and dangerous. Unfortunately at the same time for non technology inclined users even Windows approach of file->Properties->Security visual UI proves challenging.

loa_in_··on The Future Worth Building Is Human
Unless the whole paradigm shifts and we value caring about our neighbours whoever they might be. Do what people do best, make a village.
loa_in_··on The Future Worth Building Is Human – Thinking Machines Lab
Or a whole lot of people. Like a team who put human beings in space. We can do great things that a single person cannot.

I guess legislative capture of the market. Moderation is a cost center and becones mandatory so the barrier to creating competition rises.
loa_in_··on Stress disrupts hippocampal integration of overlapping events, memory inference
It's someone up there looking at previous great human achievements and expecting them instead of helping them happen. The philosophy of value capture is the term. Get people who are influential or otherwise able and squeeze it out of them for the immediate profit.
loa_in_··on Twin brothers wipe 96 government databases minutes after being fired
This seems like statistical bias in measurement, but it's also likely that enthusiasts would have both more count and more valuable items while also being more likely to show them off.

loa_in_··on Simulacrum of Knowledge Work
What if subatomic particles are actually whole universes, and their properties are a reflection of... what kind of peoples dominated, conquered their universe, and what kind of automation was left running after them themselves were gone. Some kinds of entropy harvesting automata that perpetually self build and become everything in their spacetime.

We're creating forces bigger than ourselves, and we may reach a point of no return.

loa_in_··on SilentGlass actively blocks malicious HDMI and Display Port connections
HDMI spec includes ethernet that can be used to connect otherwise isolated hardware
loa_in_··on GPT-5.5
The distinction is that it's not drawing. It's generating an SVG document containing descriptors of the shapes.
loa_in_··on Cal.diy: open-source community edition of cal.com
It being open source also allows you to actually have a read of the software and guarantee things yourself, which is the harder better path anyway.
loa_in_··on Your Company Is a Skill Now
I expected companies actually serving an API for LLMs to peruse, but this is a less technical take, and definitely food for thought.
loa_in_··on When moving fast, talking is the first thing to break
History of invention in the science of mathematics would show that there is nothing that's useless in the long term. It's all pieces of a puzzle.
loa_in_··on Protect your shed
One can deprioritise health but what does it bring long time? I know it sounds cliche, so I will add that sometimes sacrificing health a little bit is worth pondering.
