Genomes have also no awareness, so they are perfectly selfish. It is closer to clockwork than an internet router.

loa_in_··on Fil's Unbelievable Garbage Collector
I'm amazed by how readable the source is, the names meaningful and not filled with jargon.

Yes. I'm not careful lately.
loa_in_··on A deep dive into Debian 13 /tmp: What's new, and what to do if you don't like it
I tried out variations on this on my daily driver setups. The design choices here were likely threefold:

Store tmpfs in memory: volatile but limited to free ram or swap, and that writes to disk

Store tmpfs on dedicated volume: Since we're going to write onto disk anyway, make it a lightweight special purpose file system that's commited to disk

On disk tmpfs but cleaned up periodically: additional settings to clean up - how often, what should stay, tie file lifetime to machine reboot? The answers to these questions vary more between applications than between filesystems, therefore it's more flexible to leave clean up to userspace.

In the end my main concern turned out to be that I lost files that I didn't want to lose, either to reboot cleanup, on timer cleanup, etc. I opted to clean up my temp files manually as needed.

loa_in_··on China is eating the world
If you value money, and eventually exchange everything for money, you'll be left with money. China respects it's temples, traditions more than they respect money and that's where your measurements go wrong because the abstraction is very leaky.
loa_in_··on Chrome VPN Extension with 100k Installs Screenshots All Sites Users Visit
The source is part of the package, at worst minified, obfuscated, pulling code from external sources. You can inspect it yourself by unpacking the extension installation package and browsing the JavaScript.
loa_in_··on In a first, Google has released data on how much energy an AI prompt uses
That's not the same as URLs but I see how you could generalise it to include what you did.

This used to be a problem but it's been unheard of for a while
loa_in_··on Texas law gives grid operator power to disconnect data centers during crisis
Is Texas lawmaking an example of an agile lawmaking process that adapts to the ever changing landscape of needs or is it an example of a system where this will stay codified and never repeled for the foreseeable future because it was passed once?
loa_in_··on Passion over Profits
They don't have to have it on their list. In general, one doesn't necessarily have to consider a criterion.
loa_in_··on Passion over Profits
Well, history does tend to remember the victors, not the ones who proverbially fell off the edge of the world.

In other words, follow your bliss, you'll either succeed or never speak of it again.

loa_in_··on Passion over Profits
Providing substandard working conditions narrows it down significantly. Corner cutting below certain threshold just because you can?
loa_in_··on Ask HN: How do you tune your personality to get better at interviews?
A good reason to not have social media. Thinking if my vent post will upset a future employer on a Saturday afternoon is not the future I want.
loa_in_··on Multimodal WFH setup: flight SIM, EE lab, and music studio in 60sqft/5.5M²
It's not foolish. Design is subjective and it's most often a question with no objectively good answer, so it's between the designer and whoever appraises his output. There's no secret design paradigm that makes everyone happy.

loa_in_··on Ask HN: What are you working on this weekend?
I'm spending my weekend planning a new hobby project to for the first time use both what I know about electronics and the programming knowledge and make my own WiFi enabled touch screen computer based on a couple ESP32 chips.
loa_in_··on Our European search index goes live
It isn't impossible nowadays to enumerate domain names using DNS data and score them based on the content they serve. Isn't that what we really want as users? Scoring based not on proxies for relevance like referral count, but on viewable content?
loa_in_··on Japan: Apple Must Lift Browser Engine Ban by December
Freedom to use your phone however you like would make bug tracking on Apple's side more complicated and therefore more expensive and therefore it damages their profit bottom line. They would happily freeze development altogether if it was a feasible option.
loa_in_··on Mastercard deflects blame for NSFW games being taken down
Good argument to record any calls with them and submit the recordings to the press
loa_in_··on We may not like what we become if A.I. solves loneliness
Poland lives in the era of fight against pathological alcoholism. With the advent of modern heavy machinery like forklifts (as opposed to truck beds and strong arms and backs), many workplaces became hostile towards alcohol where previously alcohol was just part of workplace culture. This lead to a huge fallout of people who either became functional alcoholic outside of work or became jobless and miserable.

loa_in_··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
It's like moving, first time is very stressful and it's a whole ordeal, but after repetition it's a familiar, whole ordeal.
loa_in_··on Live coding interviews measure stress, not coding skills
Don't university courses at some point entail open book, internet access enabled exams? And that's good enough for passing or failing a whole semester?
loa_in_··on Ask HN: How do you avoid job hunting burnout?
It's a state of psyhical depletion combined with strong emotional distress caused by performing repetitive intellectual work with not sufficient emotional rewards and not enough variety. Keeping it up for months or years leads to dysregulation and makes the activity harder to harder to perform, until the only option is to avoid performing that activity altogether for months (and sort of debiasing you brain). You can get burnt out on any intellectual task. Think of keeping up an intense physical training exercise without variation in hopes of increasing size of a specific muscle to find instead that you hurt that muscle by overtraining and instead you can't move it anymore.
loa_in_··on Many countries that said no to ChatControl in 2024 are now undecided
These things won't magically boost populace's knowledge. People are born every day and they don't know anything. Each year the burden of things you need to know to be an adult increases. The populationbon general will not get hands on with something optional.
