lnyng··on How the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filing (2013)
Is distributing free tax filing software illegal? i.e. some web app similar to Intuit that help you fill forms but not filing for you. For general public that do not have many special deduction items I think this would not be very hard to do. For special deductions, I guess the app can just point the user to possible forms they should look at.
lnyng··on Sundial: Harmonizing Concurrency Control and Caching in a Distributed OLTP DBMS [pdf]
The author of this paper gave a talk today in UW-Madison about this and his other related works. Sundial is an extension to his previous work called TicToc [1], both of which are governed by the idea called "logical lease."

Logical lease serializes seemingly conflicting transactions by keeping track of logical time of read/write operations, and committing at logical time instead of physical time.

It is hard to get serialization right for DBMS transactions, but this protocol seems straightforward to reason about. Sundial is an application of logical lease in distributed OLTP DBMS, so that transactions can still serialize while using stale cache copies.

I am recently taking some database and computer architecture courses, and this paper seems very relevant to whoever also interested in these fields.

lnyng··on A surprisingly arcane little Unix shell pipeline example
1) If RHS exits before `echo red` is executed, `echo red` receives a SIGPIPE and crashes

2) Even if RHS does not exit quick enough, `echo red` writes output to the pipe, which is ignored by RHS `echo blue` (echo never reads stdin)

lnyng··on A surprisingly arcane little Unix shell pipeline example
Yes you're right. That's a typo. Thanks
lnyng··on A surprisingly arcane little Unix shell pipeline example
There are some subtle points that the blog is not clear about:

- The use of `1>&2` is to overwrite the stdout of the LHS process so that `echo green` actually never writes to the pipe, so it never gets SIGPIPE.

- `echo` only echoes arguments and always ignores stdin, so putting `echo blue` on the RHS of the pipe only serves to run the two sides of the pipe in parallel

- `bash -c '(echo green 1>&2) | echo blue' 1>stdout 2>stderr` will show you that green and blue actually write to different files

Another observation:

> if it was a separate command (or even if the shell forked to execute it internally), only the 'echo red' process would die from the SIGPIPE instead of the entire left side of the pipeline.

Most linux distributions have /bin/echo as a separate program. Running `(/bin/echo red; echo green 1>&2) | echo blue` will always print both green and blue.

EDIT: fix typo of stdin/stdout/stderr as suggested

lnyng··on Google Employees Uncover Ongoing Work on Censored China Search
While it seems like people don't like the idea of this censored search engine called Dragonfly, I wonder what people think about Microsoft's Bing. Bing is definitely running a censored version in China, or it will not survive the government regulation.

Is Bing less bad than Dragonfly in terms of censorship? or is it also bad but engineers in Microsoft care little about that?

lnyng··on The password “ji32k7au4a83” has been seen over a hundred times
Searching for that password for pages on or before Feb 27, 2019 does the trick: https://www.google.com/search?q=ji32k7au4a83&client=firefox-...
lnyng··on Gameboy Emulator for Emacs
These kind of awesome and strange project always confuses me: as a vim person, I deeply doubt if this Emacs is the text editor I heard before.
lnyng··on English, Swedish, German and Finnish Decline “Dog” (2013)
Hope that I am not the only one confused about this: what does "decline" mean in the title?
lnyng··on Gif2xlsx – Convert GIFs to Excel files
This is actually exactly 1 year ago, and the guy spent two days finishing the project, very well done!

BTW I was assuming that the program can somehow produce animating Excel file from gifs. It will be cool if it works that way.

lnyng··on Microsoft confirms Bing is down in China
https://maps.google.cn is actually working in mainland China, which I found surprisingly last month.
lnyng··on [dead]
> On the other hand, when running our simulation models (AmoebaTSP or its developed versions) on the traditional computers as we did in this study, the analogue and parallel spatiotemporal dynamics require nonlinear time for simulating them as digital and serial processes.

This sounds like some kind of poor man’s quantum computer.

lnyng··on rr: lightweight recording and deterministic debugging
It reminds me of the ReVirt [1] paper read in an advanced OS class (actually mentioned in the slides). I didn't watch the complete talk. Wondering how much is it different from ReVirt and other record debugging tools.
