lngnmn2··on Let's try to understand AI monosemanticity
Every training set will produce a different set of weights, even the same training set with produce different weights with different initialization, leave alone slightly different architectures.

So what exactly is the point, except "look at us, we are so clever"?

lngnmn2··on Are language models good at making predictions?
Absolutely, unless you want to make any life-changing decisions based on them.

This is also part of the modern culture - producing useless verbiage is ok on social media, and even is scientific communities as "research papers".

In reality though no accurate predictions can be made from merely information which is what an indexed text is.

There are a few fundamental principles at various levels behind this statement.

One is that the actual causes of events are at a different level from the texts. Another is that mere observations and counting (weighting) will always miss a change, and so on.

There is also the notion of "fully observable" environment, which is related to why validity of the "prediction" about the Sun to rise tomorrow is based not on mere "statistics" but on knowing the dynamics within the Sun (the actual process).

But, yes, everyone is just riding the hype though.

Just read my stuff.

Can do remote part time R&D.

lngnmn2··on Apple joins opposition to encrypted message app scanning
Isn't "encrypted messages" implies the impossibility of any scan?

Oh, could it be that they store all the msgs as a plain text on the server and the "encrypted" is just a meme for only a TLS connection?

Rhetorical question, of course.

lngnmn2··on Deepmind Alphadev: Faster sorting algorithms discovered using deep RL
Not general or universal. Only for pre-trained data and with abysmal worst cases.
lngnmn2··on Is infinity an odd or even number? (2011)
It is not a number, it is a separate concept, and the current consensus that it is part of the Set of numbers and of a Monoid is just wrong.

Read my stuff.
lngnmn2··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
Leetcode tests how is your math, and math is hard because handwaving and virtue signalling does not work with it.

Algorithms should be not memorized but derived on the go from well known mathematical models.

This is what good schools like MIT used to teach.

lngnmn2··on Cats learn the names of their friend cats in their daily lives
No. They just associate repeated sounds, without any semantic whatsoever, just like bird songs.

Cats do not have the brain circuitry for semantic networks (based on a language concepts) evolved yet. So called language areas are required.

How this crap is even got through a peer review? Rithoric question, I know.

lngnmn2··on Ask HN: When did tech stop being cool?
Just about the time of arrival of node_modules, why?
lngnmn2··on Atlassian products have been down for 4 days
But, of course, we will never admit that Java is a fucking abomination and designed by brain dead degenerates.

And yes, I studied programming languages before coming to this particular conclusion.

lngnmn2··on Web3 'contains the seeds of a dystopian nightmare'
Web3 is a scam - a bunch of unnecessary redundant abstractions.

Imagine your cells could pile up layers of abstract bullshit.

Molecular biology has been "optimized" by evolution to stable forms which are necessary and sufficient, and this is the big fundamental lesson.

One should remove crap, not pile it up

lngnmn2··on Study conspiracy theories with compassion
But only on your own funds. No taxpayers money for abstract bullshit.

You missed the whole putin hair-splitting abstract bullshit.

lngnmn2··on Who Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism (2006)
Abstract political and ethical concepts do not work in actual competitive biological reality.

Even in very religious societies (Hindu, Jews, Muslims) all such abstract constructions are nothing but virtue signalling.

Reality is what is going on in Mariupol right now.

lngnmn2··on Ask HN: Which book can attract anyone towards your field of study?
https://cs3110.github.io/textbook/cover.html

This just emerged right in front of our eyes. Highest quality. Way better than Real World Ocaml.

Graham Hutton's Programming in Haskell 2ed (plus his video courses).

Programming in Scala Fourth Edition.

lngnmn2··on Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve?
People with real, not imposter autism cannot change themselves quickly. The way out is to understand and accept what you are first, and to realize that social is not your speciality (and it doesn't worth it anyway).

Keeping a safe distance from idiots is more beneficial than ability to be "nice person".

Be very good at something which others need and all the problems will go away. They will be nice to you, and this is the real and only way.

lngnmn2··on C Isn't a Programming Language Anymore
Ok, I have entered into a wrong shitfest.

First. An ABI had nothing to do with C, it is an OS/hardware calling conventions - how the stack is used and procedure's parameters being passed. That is a machine code level.

Second. Redefinition of hardware types is beyond bullshit. I can't even comment on this.

Third. Yes, Every. Single. Architecture will have its own ABI. This is how linux kernel is organised (as a direct consequence of the above) and it has nothing to do with C. Again, it is a machine code level.

The rest is not worth commenting.

I missed the fact who wrote the article, so I am ok with being flagged in this discussion. This is the new normal.

lngnmn2··on Write plain text files
Write org files.

Now even vim had a mode for them. Check out what pandoc is.

Don't use agenda features though, it is a huge distraction.

lngnmn2··on ‘Simple’ AI can anticipate bank managers’ loan decisions to over 95% accuracy
Because this is a trivial problem reducible to an n-dimension vector.
lngnmn2··on Scientist busts myths about how humans burn calories
Wow, this is a milestone indeed.

Abstract bullshit considered as an overturn of a simple experimental evidence even a freshman could set up and measure.

lngnmn2··on Happy 15th birthday Hacker News
We must acknowledge that it went from the free speech place for nerds and autists with zero censure to a safe space for mediocre imposters where everything slightly unconventional is being flagged.

Congratulations.

lngnmn2··on What Color Is Your Monad
Enough already.

Monad is a generalization (as a type-class, which is the particular way of defining an ADT) of an type-level abstraction barrier.

It comes from untyped math which has "structural" notions, such as Monoid, and, indeed Monad could be viewed as a Monoid.

There is nothing more "deep" or "profound" in there, and the whole mass hysteria is similar to those when Java came out.

lngnmn2··on Heuristics that almost always work
It is almost rediculous how everything is a subtle bullshit with nice wording.

Yes, neither ivermectin nor hydroxychloroquine had an agent which is relevant at the level of a RNA viruses, a hurricane can be seen long before they are here (unlike earthquakes let's say) and every single social construction, be it a religion or anything of a lesser scale, has distinct patterns and social techniques, such as secrecy, etc.

The world has no miracles, except in Nature, and even those are bounded by the environment.

But, of course, one can get the HN front page these days with such a subtle bullshit.

lngnmn2··on Do svidaniya, Igor, and thank you for Nginx
Yes, this is the kind of a story which are being dramatised in movies - a highly functioning autism, habit of attention to details and principial insistence on doing thing "just right" and enough free time and lack of distractions (by degens) to carry it on.

I remember when I saw the nginx code for the first time - I was so impressed that I wanted to build libnginx.a (of core data structures) for my own projects. Never happened.

The only comparable story I know is Rob Pike - similar principles and obsessions of doing just right, which, in turn, is related to good mathematics of finding and using just right abstractions by generalising from actual pattern.

If you want to learn C programming (and programming in general) read nginx and unit(nxt). Look how systematic, minimal and just right is everything.

I like to than Igor for teaching me and being an example.
