lmedinas··on Blizzard bans player from Hearthstone following on-stream Hong Kong protest
I think Blizzard wants to make a statement and being strict about politics have no place in their games... Honestly i would be surprised if any gaming company would allow that, independent if the Player is right or wrong.

With respect to Twitch placement, since when Twitch is a benchmark for number of Players in a game worldwide ? HS lost momentum because of the greedy economy of the game and because other games surged.

lmedinas··on Ask HN: Forums Similar to Hacker News in the Internet
I was not able to find anything close to Hacker News at least UI-wise, moderation, comments and content-wise.

The anything closer, imo, is Reddit and Slashdot.

lmedinas··on Ask HN: What are some purchases that increased the quality of your life?
without any particular order: Sonos Beam, iPad, robot vacuum cleaner, my house and raspberry pi to handle smarthome stuff.
lmedinas··on Explanation of the state of uBlock Origin and other blockers for Safari
Well i have no complains about Safari but their Extension system is really costing them users. At this point I uBlock Origin is by far the most reliable AdBlocker you can find and my having the developers explaining that in the future maybe only Firefox will support it it's kinda of sad.

Of course we know that Google has to make money from Ads so its understandable but what about Apple ? They are putting heavy focus in privacy, would it be good if they open their browser to make sure their users will not move to Chrome/Firefox or other browser ?

lmedinas··on Ask HN: How comfortable do you feel using cloud-based password managers?
Sometime ago, I bought 1Password for iOS, then Mac, mostly for convenience and I was happy with it until I got no viable way to use it on Windows simply because their client still in early development sucked. After some time again they stopped caring about the local db feature and for me that was it. I Moved immediately to Keepass and never looked back. The reason was because I can find a client for nearly every platform possible and because I store MY OWN database where I want.

I prefer to store KeePass encrypted dB on Dropbox than going for 1Password cloud.

Plus Keepass is opensource...

lmedinas··on Apple Music Overtakes Spotify in U.S. Subscribers
Actually nowadays you can find really cheap CDs in Amazon (even more than iTunes)and of course rip it to FLAC or Mp3.

Or when i can not find the CD in Amazon i usually get from 7digital.

lmedinas··on How Discord Went Mainstream
In addition to this you have integration with other gaming platforms like: Battle.net, Steam, Twitch and for example join a game directly from Discord.
lmedinas··on Sublime Text 3.2 Released
I was/am an emacs users since > 15y and for ~2 years i left Emacs for sublime text. Main reason, the performance and easy to setup without hacking my .emacsrc everyday.

Sure emacs is great and it has 10000x more features than anything else but ask yourself how much of them you really need and how convenient Emacs is at the end of the day ? I asked this myself and i came to the conclusion that i was better off a more recent editor. ST has a similar philosophy like vim and emacs and thats why i choose it.

Recently im trying VS Code but the performance is still somehow not fully convincing me.

lmedinas··on Firefox Send: Free encrypted file transfer service
the problem with "AOL Chrome" is that it's based on advertising and internet company services where Mozilla has a chance to provide a service, even if it could be paid, without advertising and privacy friendly like their latest experiments.
lmedinas··on The Aldi effect: how one discount supermarket transformed the way Britain shops
Perhaps Lidl has a different approach for your market ?

At least in Europe you have a chance to choose what you want: The classical premium brands, premium Lidl brand or cheap brands.

lmedinas··on Firefox Send: Free encrypted file transfer service
a bit off topic but here it goes...

This is how i think Mozilla can capture more users back to Firefox. By providing "extra" services attached to the Mozilla and Firefox brand will make them a superior product to the end user. Sure it's hard to compete with Chrome but if you offer useful features and services integrated in your Browser i see that Mozilla actually has a chance to compete with Google for the browser space.

This is one of the "advantages", if you are a heavy Google user, of Chrome over the competition is that everything is attached to your Google account. Passwords, history, spellers, dictionaries, shortcuts, etc...

If Mozilla comes with Send, Notes, Password Manager all integrated in Firefox i see a good way to bring back some of the previous users that switched to Chrome.

lmedinas··on The Aldi effect: how one discount supermarket transformed the way Britain shops
The good thing about Aldi and Lidl is that you get to choose the quality and pay premium or not. This is one of the reasons why i often shop on any of them. I'd like to have a choice to pay premium for what i feel it should be premium.
lmedinas··on Fortnite Is the Future, but Probably Not for the Reasons You Think
Just a small comment that Cross-progress in Fortnite is great. Means you have the same account on your Android, Mac, PC and PS4.

They really nailed it.

lmedinas··on Fortnite Is the Future, but Probably Not for the Reasons You Think
In my opinion it's a brilliant game because the Game combines a vast number of interesting mechanics from PUBG, Blackout and Fornite into a Free2Play game. Not to mention that:

- is way faster to get into the game by being much more optimized.

- a typical game is between 15-25min, There are much less dead times when compared to PUBG and Fortnite

- The characters are fun and they bring an interesting approach to BR.

- The ping system is great. You don't need to explicitly use Voice communication. I've won a number of games without using Voice.

Give it try, its really a fun game.

lmedinas··on Fortnite Is the Future, but Probably Not for the Reasons You Think
Ist't Apex Legends classified as 18yo content ? At least in Germany is.

This also helps explains why you're younger brother was still playing Fortnite and why it's not gonna die to Apex.

lmedinas··on Ask HN: What should a systems/low-level software engineer know?
Learn how to use Debugging Tools and understand how to system works (Kernel, libraries, application, C programming) etc...

This is the best advice.

lmedinas··on Portugal’s Economic Revival
Exactly my thoughts... this is complete fake news and complete propaganda from the Government Coalition (all Left Wing).

Health system is completely broken the public Hospitals don't have enough resources or money to threat the patients with dignity, people still live with very low salaries and high prices of goods, The industry is still very weak unlike its mentioned in the article etc.. etc...

Honestly seeing these articles makes me really sad.

lmedinas··on VirtualBox 6.0 released
Sorry but it could be (even remotely closely) to a Linux only solution.
lmedinas··on The New Brave Is 22% Faster
If someone from the Brave Team can explain why Brave is "so much faster" than Chrome i would like to be interested. Chrome + ublock wouldn't archive similar results ?
lmedinas··on Fragmentation Is Why Desktop Linux Failed [video]
My view on the topic:

I have used Linux Desktops for about ~15years and involved in the Development community it astonished me how frequent the APIs break specially at Desktop Application/libraries level. I remember several libraries, like GTK+ deprecating often APIs even during stable releases. The consequence of this is that the main application developer spends a big part of its time constantly updating its application instead of developing new features and make it feature rich.

The same can be said in order parts of the Desktop like the transition from X11 to Wayland/Weston and all the Desktop Environments that some years ago fragmented and decreased their quality. Unity, KDE and GNOME all failed in producing a Desktop that really appealed to all users.

Finally for me another failure is the package management. For the App developer he needs to get his app packages for all major distributions and imagine the effort of the App developer and App maintainer to support different libc and userspace tool versions.

All in all the Application developer has such a huge burden that he is most of the time updating his app to new apis/tools than actually developing new features.

lmedinas··on Google One
For that price i would not mind to get a subscription if it would be fully encrypted and a good messaging app unlike the hangouts and allo trash.
lmedinas··on Choose Firefox Now, or Later You Won't Get a Choice (2014)
Just fyi this article is from 2014 and it was mentioned here in HN several times. But yes you are not too late :)
lmedinas··on Microsoft is building a Chromium browser to replace Edge on Windows 10
generally i agree they are spending a lot of money on development but they are also ensuring the future for their Web Tools when they have their own browser.

Honestly speaking its good to have competition and apart from Firefox and Safari (partially due to being Apple sepcific), Edge was the only Browser (with an own engine) that could compete with Chrome.

lmedinas··on Firefox desktop market share now below 9%
Unfortunately this is becoming more and more frequent. We are back to 2000s I.E. only websites... :(

I'm afraid there are only some options:

1) Mozilla aggressively tries to be Chrome compatible. 2) Focus on Developer Tools in order to "motivate" Developers to use Firefox instead to develop their apps. 3) Somehow a miracle comes and they gain market share.

Actually i like the direction of Mozilla is taking now days where they are adding lots of interesting usability to Firefox. Like taking screenshots, share/send menu etc... But it seems this is not enough to get new users :(

lmedinas··on Firefox desktop market share now below 9%
Firefox for me is really slow compared to Chrome, specially with uBlock.

I would recommend Firefox Focus/Klar instead.

lmedinas··on Warcraft III Reforged
the latest patches for W3 already support Full HD.
lmedinas··on Air India Express 737 Hits ILS, Damages Wall on Departure, Flies for 4 Hours
and the quality of Air India pilots too :) I mean... seriously how bad can you be to put so many people at risk.
lmedinas··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
Actually this should be an act of "good faith" where you are adding a layer of security to your account and not about making even more harm to your account.
lmedinas··on Ask HN: Best alternative to Gmail?
copy & paste from that link:

" This encryption happens as it is written to disk, without the customer having to take any action. Google encrypts data with distinct encryption keys, even if they belong to the same customer. Data is encrypted using 128-bit or stronger Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

Google encrypts core G Suite data while it is “in transit” as well, whether it is traveling over the Internet between the customer and Google, or moving within Google as it shifts from one data center to another. We encrypt this data between Google and our customers using HTTPS with forward secrecy. "

The truth nobody knows but it seems that they encrypt with their own keys so that means they can open the data and read it.

lmedinas··on Disable Google Chrome Sign In and Sync
Do yourself and the community a favor and when you see a website that doesn't work well make the Firefox Team aware of it[1]. They have a dedicated Team to check those issues.
