I dont think there is a point to continue Firefox without Gecko. Of course im with you, if Gecko dies it will be a very sad day for the internet.
The situation for Firefox is that bad, that even enterprise users - ESR - are moving to MS Edge since its offering support together with MS Office.
I think Firefox needs something drastic to become relevant again, which is very unlikely taking into account the last years history.
Myself as a FF user i'm more and more tempted to switch to some other multiplatform-chrome-compatible browser.
But i guess the main 2 problems are:
1) Not enough Mac users which would be significant for a AAA gaming company to port their games on day 1 and get profit.
2) Apple has not taken yet gaming seriously, maybe because they have not seen a viable business model for gaming. I guess here this could change as Apple is slowly putting their feet on it with Apple Arcade (which is definitely not going to bring hardcode gamers), making iOS a good gaming platform (device stability, good GPUs and good support for 3rd party controllers) now its the first time most popular Macs are getting a good GPU. Perhaps also this is one of the reasons why they are blocking Cloud gaming.
I used Emacs for years and one day i realized i had a huge .emacs file and spend lots of time maintaining it, that's when i was conviced it was not the editor for me or I was using it wrong. I moved to sublime, vscode and now im giving vim/neovim a try.
As much as i liked Emacs i dont see myself using it again soon.
The author lists several bugs, instead of posting the issue number with a link, he puts his Tweet with the bug numbers (without link). Im not sure what the author is trying to accomplish here. Also I guess these kind of bugs, although not nice, they are mostly because MacOS suffered the biggest change since its history and supporting 2 completely different architectures is not an easy job. Of course we are at the mercy of Apple to fix them but this is part of the deal when you buy such a machine at this point.
Then all other points are just showing all the known the same issues that some commercial SW was not yet ported to a new architecture.
But i guess this is not very different from other social networks.
But imo this is a general trend on Linux except for the Kernel where Linus and co do a great job to prevent API breakage. The others not so much.
There were plenty of apps changing from GTK to Qt awhile ago i suspect GTK4 will be the next. As for Gimp and Inkscape it will probably take another decade to catch up.
In fact it seems to have killed IRC for many, which is kinda sad. Most of the IRC networks i use are mostly dead now. For me Discord has replaced TS and IRC.
sure, i guess the same can be said about WSL on Windows 10 but that does not mean people don't find it useful. The whole point is that Proton is a very welcome addition to Linux due to the lack of native games.
Yesterday i boot up my Majaro with i3, installed the latest Proton on Steam and decided to install Path of Exile. The results are, for me, very surprising how good was the experience:
- Started Steam. Set Proton version to 5.13-1.
- Install Path of Exile. Install went really fast compared to my Windows 10. Im using both on SSD, Windows NTFS and Linux Btrfs.
- Started Path of exile. Put settings on high/ultra and set graphics backend to Vulkan. I have a RTX 2080S with a 6700K im sure PoE can run on high/ultra.
- Restarted. Played for like 1h between 150-200 fps without any glitch or anything i could say its worse than Windows.
- During this time i had Discord on background, Firefox, Terminals and was able to switch workspaces without any issue with i3.
I'm really surprised how smooth the experience was. I have really to give kudos to the Team working on Proton and Steam for this nice "Desktop" experience. Plus it seems from my Steam library, apart from some MP games that have anti-cheat, it seems most of the games are playable and classified as gold or platinum. I really recommend to anyone not playing competitive MP games to give Linux a try with Steam. Well done!
Maybe the HomePod (original) can compete with the Sonos One or Five at sound level but not in terms of features people are looking for listening music such as: virtually all music streaming services available, integration with all the remaining Sonos products for Home cinema or for Home sound system.
To me Homepod Mini is after the home assistant market. The HomePod (original) well it seemed like a shot in the dark now it will most likely get the Homepod mini features.
Huge talent and very innovative guitar player. Known for his guitar playing style, dive bombs, tapping, usage of Floyd Rose, custom guitars (Frankenstrat), brown sound, solos, instrumentals, heavy sound and huge music hits.
I cannot think of many influential Rock guitar players as Eddie.
- ack -> grep on steroids, really useful for coding. https://beyondgrep.com/
- irssi -> IRC client
- mplayer -> Video player console
- cmus -> Console Audio Player
- htop -> top but pretty
- powertop -> save power on your Linux laptop
But my experience to make it work as a Desktop OS is very poor. Some reasons: The overall performance is way worse than Linux, the ports are not always up-to-date, other OS simulation is also outdated which means running commercial apps will be a challenge, upgrade process from version X to Y can be quiet painful, the lack of support for certain HW and Battery usage on laptops. I could never find anything that i could not do better and more efficient on Linux.
On the positive side: CWM and their Artwork are really cool.
As for your second question well you cannot development Windows specific features such as DirectX. Also the supporting for games, although getting better and better, is still somehow not very much common as the playerbase is small. Also for graphics, CAD and video editing Linux is lacking several commercial support.
If, for one day, i would follow a similar schedule i would be actually very surprised. In my actual life, i work more hours (but not crazy non-sense 60h week like tech people often say), need to have lunch and dinner breaks, take a shower, breakfast, take care of kids and play with them, find time to go to grocery, help with the usual homework, find sometime for myself to watch netflix or play some game in my PC, go outside and then at the end of the day find sometime to sleep. On weekends plan something with family, take longer breaks for lunch/dinner, etc...
So yeah, i guess thats how life is.
This goes into straight competition with 80% of the fitness apps has it provides yoga, HIIT, bike etc... etc... fully integrated into Apple devices plus if you buy the new Watch you get 3 months for free. Bingo.
How is Apple running out of ideas to get even more money on services ?
