lma21··on OpenAI bots competing against Humans right now
Ignorant here. How do you take an already trained model and execute it elsewhere? Isn’t the training phase part of the whole (ongoing) simulation?
lma21··on The Site Reliability Workbook: Practical Ways to Implement SRE [pdf]
I'm more than willing to contribute. I've been looking into such an organization for a while now, I'd be happy to contribute back the "problems" and incremental "solutions" I'd like to test out. In my case it's a bit different, i'd love to see SRE being implemented at a large scale for packaged software where the customer operates the bought product on his own.
lma21··on Ask HN: What are the things that you have automated in your personal life?
What, why? It looks a reasonable solution for a missing 'filtering' feature :-)
lma21··on Amazon Workers Facing Firing Can Appeal to a Jury of Their Co-Workers
Is there an equivalent in France? How does one who has a CDI appeal in court when he's facing a termination procedure?
lma21··on Moving from Azure to Google Cloud Platform
Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't Netflix run their billing / search / recommendation /... systems on AWS and their whole video content streaming are engineered / hosted internally in collaboration with ISPs?
lma21··on Moving from Azure to Google Cloud Platform
I understand that Gitlab helm charts are now beta in 11.0, does it also mean Gitlab is fully running on Kubernetes on Azure (there's no mention of AKS)?

I wonder if they'll also publish the difference in cost between the two platforms.

lma21··on GitHub Pages generated a TLS cert for my own domain
Thanks for this insight! Now i see the difference and where bias could play a role when recommending a product in case we're affiliated with. In fact, I see this widely used only in the HN community.
lma21··on GitHub Pages generated a TLS cert for my own domain
a completely honest question, what's wrong with recommending a product without mentioning if we're affiliated or not with that product?
lma21··on Netflix FlameScope
Haven't followed up on this lately — is sampling java stacktraces with perf going well? what happened to the frame pointer issue? do we still have to use -XX:+PreserveFramePointer to get the full stack?

Awesome tool nevertheless. Always a pleasure to go through Brendan's utilities regarding performance analysis!

lma21··on Ask HN: Resumes that look good but professional too
Great format, simple and easy to read.
lma21··on Ask HN: Java Scheduler in a cloud environment
What are the inconveniences behind using a JDBCstore? Wouldn't it be fairly simple to plug it into AWS's RDS or Azure's SQL Database?
lma21··on Reading privileged memory with a side-channel
What is the analogy behind being able to go into the restricted room?
lma21··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
Honest question - if this user creates another account and keeps violating the rules, how would he be stopped?
lma21··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
Hike again this year, and hike beyond 150 KM.

Positively impact at least 50 people. I'm not sure how to measure that, be it teaching a thing or two, helping homeless people, or talking to friends...

lma21··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
I like this one.

7M steps! That's quite challenging, that's an average of 20K steps a day... Even the 7x10K races would only make up for ~90K steps...

lma21··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
If that doesn't count I'm gonna have trouble finding that many type of fruit in my area...
lma21··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2017?
That's impressive! How do you manage to read so much?
lma21··on Benchmarking Modern GPUs for Maximum Cloud Cost Efficiency in Deep Learning
Great write up! Even though I'm very far from understanding deep learning and the various frameworks you're testing here, benchmarking GPUs has always been a muse to me.

I'm interested to see the utilization of the underlying GPU devices when you run the MLP or CNN benchmarks (monitored with `nvidia-smi`) — the speed-up factor between the different benchmarks don't seem to be inline with the speed-up factor shown in cuDNN link[1] between a K80 and P100. I'm wondering if the P100 device is under-utilized when used with TensorFlow or CNTK.

lma21··on Linux tracing systems and how they fit together
Great article, sums up the linux tracing domain in a pretty neat way. I've used strace / perf / dtrace extensively since these are the only tools our clients' infrastructures can support, and it's always a bugger when you're on an older system and your hands are tied. Never tried eBPF yet, I should look into it once the kernel 4.7+ release hits RHEL
lma21··on New SMB Worm Uses Seven NSA Hacking Tools, whilst WannaCry Used Just Two
technically speaking, how did you handle the replication across the network (nmap && scp?)?
lma21··on Reflecting on Susan Fowler’s Reflections
> Sexism is a systemic issue, just like any other ism, and it can’t be solved by firing the handful of HR reps that were directly involved.

So let's ignore the unacceptable behaviour of Uber's HR reps and focus on the problem holistically ? This article isn't making a lot of sense, the author wants to support Suzan's cause yet do nothing to fix Uber's way of handling it ?

lma21··on Tensorflow and deep leanrning, without a PhD – part 2
I've been wanting to dive into this subject for quite a while now. I've been playing with large data sets for a few years now. I learned only the basics of data mining. I re-took courses in linear algebra and inferential stats. How much time do you think I would need (per week) and for how long to achieve a knowledgeable status in Tensorflow and deep learning (assuming I know the kind of models i aim to build and improve) ?
lma21··on PuTTY 0.68 has been released
that's amazing, I will definitely try it
lma21··on PuTTY 0.68 has been released
Can tmux start within the WSL?
lma21··on PuTTY 0.68 has been released
I use PuTTY and connect to a tmux server afterwards.. tabs / sessions / programmable interactions with the terminal are a life saver that tmux provides. Give it a try.
lma21··on PuTTY 0.68 has been released
I always preferred putty's terminal window, not sure why, even though git bash's can be customized as well.. can you save sessions in git bash?
lma21··on PuTTY 0.68 has been released
You moved to another platform or another terminal?
lma21··on GCE vs. AWS in 2016: Why You Shouldn't Use Amazon
Based on which criteria do you preempt your servers? 25K sounds like a lot !
lma21··on GCE vs. AWS in 2016: Why You Shouldn't Use Amazon
I may be missing something, why is bare metal better in this case (immutable/premptible servers)?
lma21··on Bitcoin Price Chart
Can someone please explain why the price has been increasing? I haven't properly followed any news behind bitcoin lately...
