lm2s··on Calmira Reborn – a Windows 9x-inspired shell for Windows 3.1
The screenshots don't need to be in the main page, there can be links to them as it used to be done in the past.
lm2s··on Team led by Japanese researchers reveals best way to put crying baby to sleep
Not an extreme. Pink noise works really well and brown noise to some extent. White noise is a bit harsh for our human ears.

The pink noise besides simulating the shushing also serves as sort of a noise blanket to make other sounds being made around the baby pop up less, sort of sound mantle.

lm2s··on [dead]
This _really_ feels like a marketing piece disguised as something else.
lm2s··on U.S. weighs sending 5k troops to Eastern Europe to counter Russia
This might be tin-foil-hatty, but the U.S. leaves Afghanistan and not long after this is happening. Really feels like its war machine needs to be busy.
lm2s··on Cannabidiol inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication through induction of host ER stress
That's a great description. I'm "stealing" it.
lm2s··on Cannabidiol inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication through induction of host ER stress
Just commenting to wish you all the best, I'm in the same 5 weeks to birth "boat" :)

I wish you and your soon to be increased family all the best.

lm2s··on Trademark Actions Against the PostgreSQL Community
I think it just means "outside of court".
lm2s··on Jailbroken iOS can't run macOS apps. I spent a week to find out why
If we look at it from a business perspective it looks a lot better to go the iOS on Mac direction.

And we can see it happening. macOS is getting more iOS-like with each new iteration.

lm2s··on Show HN: Carros.com, a simple car classified website I made
> tmcz26

> Brazil it looks like.

> Source: am brazilian, recognize the make, models and prices

Have you missed the number plates being clearly from Portugal?!

lm2s··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
This comment is so weird. It seems we're starting to treat adults like children. Don't say the "n" word, don't say the "r" word.

I think I understand where it comes from, but to me this safe bubble that is trying to be created, generates more problems than solves.

EDIT: Like someone commented below, it just gives those words more power when used in derogatory way.

lm2s··on Should individuals who already had a SARS-CoV-2 infection receive 1 or 2 shots? [pdf]
It's not FUD. It happens. It might be a small percentage but it's real.

There's a case of someone close to me that works in the ER that was positive around November with very little symptoms, got cured and now has it again but with stronger symptoms.

And from the antibodies tests done to the health personal in that hospital, it seems some people get good antibody response and others not so much.

lm2s··on Slack is down
Yes, I'm wondering that also.

Todoist was having issues and iOS app launching from Xcode started taking a lot of time in the middle of the day (which reminds me of the app online check fiasco not so long ago).

Even HN seems to be a bit slower.

lm2s··on The Laws of Core Data
GRDB is perhaps the best solution available with a very good API. Simple to start using and all the power of SQL easily accessible if needed.
lm2s··on Pfizer Covid vaccine approved for use next week in UK
> Due to the severe health risks associated with COVID-19 and the fact that re-infection with COVID-19 is possible (...)
lm2s··on Ask HN: Anyone had "bogus self-employment" issues freelancing remotely in EU?
Self-employment is a kind of legal working status. Think of an handyman (or an Uber driver), they might have a company or be self-employed.

Since having a company has much more legal work and expenses, many workers prefer to be self-employed. And usually self-employment seems to only happen in lower income jobs.

In this case bogus means that the self-employed status is being abused by a company to reduce tax payment and associated costs and benefits that an employee would have.

lm2s··on Looking at the experience of black Britons through an American lens
As Rammstein said: We're all living in America.
lm2s··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2020)
I'm not seeing the iOS position on the website, is it no longer available?
lm2s··on I tracked and analyzed 13,159 Hacker News posts. Here's what I learned
Interestingly OP didn't post at the best time nor day to reach the front page, although not at the worst either.
lm2s··on DOS Subsystem for Linux
Take that, Microsoft! :D
lm2s··on Show HN: Lofimusic.app, an open source Background Music Progressive Web App
That makes sense to me and I think it's the principle being mantras, repetition gets someone into a state of trance.

Although I don't know if I would be able to loop just one song, I do repeat albums that I like. So I put a few albums that I like and have listened to many, _many_ times, on queue. Already knowing the songs makes my brain settle (or at least reduces the cognitive(?) load a lot), and sometimes I even discovered "new sounds".

lm2s··on Want people to do the right thing? Save them the guilt trip
I prefer "Hmm I don't think that's correct" and go on as to why. To me it feels less like an attack.
lm2s··on Turns out coffee pods are pretty good for the environment (2019)
>According to research by Halo, a British producer of compostable coffee capsules, every minute about 39,000 of these pods are made worldwide, while up to 29,000 are dumped in landfill sites.

29 000 every minute.

I find it really hard to believe that this is better than the traditional espresso.

IMO the way this blog post is written makes it seem sponsored by capsule manufacturers, which have huge margins versus traditional espresso.

lm2s··on Headphones are collecting too much personal data (2019)
>I mostly don't use bluetooth. I keep them wired 95% of the time (...)

IMO this seems like a very big detail that should be included when describing your battery longevity.

lm2s··on Mars images rendered in 4K [video]
I was experiencing that on Safari, then switched to Chrome and it now shows 4K.
lm2s··on Playstation's secret weapon: a nearly all-automated factory
Yes it does seem slow, and being an assembly line I wonder if it's just poor communication in the news article.

I'd think that 30 seconds would be how long 1 PlayStation takes to be assembled, but that there would be a new one every few seconds coming out of the line.

lm2s··on Seven years later, I bought a new MacBook. For the first time, I don't love it
>When video conferencing or under high stress like running multiple VMs the system would miss key presses or mouse clicks. I'm not saying that the system was laggy, which it was, and it is expected. Rather, that I would type the word "macbook" and the system would register "mok", for example.

To the key missing part, my hunch is that this is happening because of software workarounds that Apple did on macOS to reduce the problems in their previous keyboards clusterf*ck.

lm2s··on Notion for everyone
Notion consuming 10-15% CPU while on idle is a deal breaker to me. I wish they'd devote a bit more resources to fix this.

(On macOS, don't know if this is the case on other OSes)

lm2s··on “The Shining” is perfect quarantine viewing
Talking about "The Shining": Doctor Sleep is one of the best "scary" movies I've seen in the last years.

The submersion was amazing.

lm2s··on Ask HN: Play Store removed our app, but allows WhatsApp
See there's the problem. Harassing other people that are not responsible for your client debt.
lm2s··on Apple Faceshield
It just has a faster start. Here in Portugal people have been printing 3D face shield for 2 weeks (or more probably) and delivering them to those who need it.

In the meantime injection mold factories started creating the mold, fine tuning it and are now producing in large quantities.

But you see, for 2 weeks (or more) the big factories had 0 face shields coming out, which matters a lot.

People on the field don't need great and efficient solutions 2 weeks down the line, they need good enough solutions NOW.

I don't understand how the comment can have upvotes. "feels good"? Really? People with 3D printers are making a difference and actually helping those in the field. From health staff, to law enforcement to other areas. Shame on you.

And no I don't have a 3D printer. Unfortunately.
