llaolleh··on 10 years since Google said to “hang tight” about Linux support for Google Drive
“Show me the incentives and I will show you the outcome.” - Charlie Munger
llaolleh··on Making open source hardware design a reality
I'm not as hopeful as you. That Parallella chip went nowhere and had a ton of issues.
llaolleh··on Pounce: A multiplayer stealth game about hunting / tracking
The tutorial is great. One of the best I've seen.
llaolleh··on I Am Seriously Considering Going Back to Desktop Computers (2020)
Word. But now I have a negative emotions in that workspace because I don't enjoy my day job :/.
llaolleh··on Google Docs New Feature: Pageless
This is the most innovative feature Google Docs pushed out in the past 5 years lol.
llaolleh··on Google Search Is Dying
Another reason why is the Google founders have sailed into the sunset. The founder ethos is gone when they founders are no longer there.
llaolleh··on How to Drop Out (2004)
Been doing so much lately ML so I thought this was gonna be a guide on dropout.
llaolleh··on Heuristics that almost always work
If he finished with that line with a photoshopped rock it would've been great.
llaolleh··on Google critiqued the practice of displaying ads above search results
I remember reading the first paper and my impression is that a lot of the engineering limitations back then no longer apply in 2020+.
llaolleh··on Launch HN: Castled Data (YC W22) – Open-Source Reverse ETL
I would disagree with this. Most Python developers I know can do Java. Not a big deal.
llaolleh··on Show HN: Social network that looks and works more like a forum
This is my thought as well. How do you then design for small communities for the web is the hard part.
llaolleh··on Bitcoin Sinks to $41,000 Amid ‘Extreme Fear’
The store of value argument is such baloney. Value is derived from supply and demand. Demand can always go to zero.
llaolleh··on Best Pens for 2022: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens
+1 for Kerry. It feels extremely smooth and it's probably the best mechanical pencil I've used.
llaolleh··on Search engines and SEO spam
It's really hard to get people to use something other than Google. If you were to launch such a product, it would have to be so much better that people recommend it organically to other people.
llaolleh··on Show HN: No Trash Search
I agree with this approach. You can't crawl everything from the getgo - focus on a very specific domain catered to a specific set of users.
llaolleh··on Ask HN: How did you move on from past experiences?
Writing helps a lot. Just write everything out without a filter.
llaolleh··on Summary of the AWS Service Event in the Northern Virginia (US-East-1) Region
I wonder if they could've designed better circuit breakers for situations like this. They're very common in electrical engineering, but I don't think they're as common in software design. Something we should try to design and put in, actually for situations like this.
llaolleh··on Ask HN: How are you taking care of you eyes?
I switched monitors to LG and they have reader mode. I turned that on and it took care of 90% of my eye strain attacks.

Another things mentioned here that help: use reduced lenses corrected for work, work next to a window and take a look at the passing dog once in a while, take daily walks and focus on looking at something far away.

llaolleh··on Privacy.com Reissuing All Cards
It's a little ironic that privacy.com is asking for your SSN lol.
llaolleh··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
I think open source will be tough because you're going to need a lot of saints to work on a search engine of Google's caliber.

Maybe an alternative revenue model instead of ads.

llaolleh··on A Website for Learning Vim
The problem with Vim only development we don't have the OS support to use only the keyboard.

Soon or later you have to reach for the mouse to scroll through the browser, or change/rearrange windows, even with all the fancy Vim plug-ins.

llaolleh··on Ask HN: Why doesn't anyone create a search engine comparable to 2005 Google?
Everyone runs in the other direction anytime a search engine is mentioned. The thought of competing with Google turns people off.

Even in 2021, despite how bad it's become, it's still miles ahead of other competitors.

llaolleh··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
Damn I thought me getting redirected to an extension was a bug. This is super lame.
llaolleh··on Every search bar looks like a URL bar to users
Chrome rolled out that update on mobile but for whatever reason they rolled it back.

It's a much better design choice imo when you get used to it.

llaolleh··on Things I’ve learned in my 20 years as a software engineer
Exactly. It's not how fast someone churns out code but how well thought out/elegance in approach that delivers this 10x value.

Instead of writing entire systems from scratch, maybe you have enough experience or familiarity with well known techniques and libraries to ship faster.

llaolleh··on Things I’ve learned in my 20 years as a software engineer
I think it's also because we have a lot of ego. Let's admit it. There are some people who have a rare insight or mobilize people and code in a way that provides 10x value to the company and people.

Think about all the kickass Python libraries people have wrote. Those provide 10x value across the board to entire industries.

llaolleh··on Launch HN: Hotswap (YC S21) – Easily migrate customers away from competitors
I think this actually a great idea and there is a ton of opportunity here.

Software salesmen over hype their software with fancy presentations, and lo and behold companies are stuck with their shitty software and locked in because the migration is extremely painful.

If you actually make migrations painless and super efficient I think it would be good for all parties and solve a ton of endless time humanity spends on pointless migrations.

llaolleh··on Ask HN: Has web development become insane or am I stuck in my ways?
Yes - overengineering is a disease. As it is discussed extensively on here, most companies are not Google or Netflix. Engineers usually opt for the most complex option, when there are multiple factors to consider - reliability, development time, is this massive setup cost worth the effort given our load, etc.
llaolleh··on Whatever Happened to UI Affordances?
Affordances are one of those core UI concepts that everyone should know and implement to guide the user smoothly all the way through. Design of Everyday Things, and one HCI course pays off so much in the long run.
llaolleh··on Ask HN: Which book or course gave you an unfair advantage?
During my senior year, my government teacher called people out for saying like every 5 words. For the entire year. He used to be a former lawyer.

This has got me into the habit of always listening as I speak and it has been extremely worthwhile.
