llanowarelves··on Rural Americans are importing tiny Japanese pickup trucks
Thanks for the links. Why is the phrase "conspiracy theory" used for that though?

Sounds like it's a value-judgement free decision from manufacturers to follow the incentives from the policy as we'd predict:

way cheaper and less work to make those (now pretty popular) vehicles bigger than R&D and re-tool factories to make smaller and/or more efficient. It would need to be made more efficient to get smaller otherwise you lose power. Truck owners are comparing power (even if they dont use it, and it's sometimes just brand bragging rights) so that sounds like a worse option if you're making and selling them.

llanowarelves··on Gov. Inslee signs bill to remove death penalty from Washington state law
It's not about retribution or revenge, but costs (which are way beyond just monetary).

That's also why it's not up to the wronged personally to decide, but the State (the process; but other people, their peers).

If the victim of a horrific triple-homicide (let's say their family) decided to "forgive and forget", and let someone truly destructive free (which letting them live out gives the risk of, like when violent criminals were released due to overcrowding and COVID), they would be externalizing all the associated costs/risks of having that person live or be free onto us and the rest of society.

Yes, it needs serious controls around it (the few times the option is actually used). But like we see with some officials, the pendulum has swung so far the other way where even violent crime is sometimes downplayed out of "tolerance" and "empathy", pitting the value of his rough childhood against the expectation of safety of your child.

llanowarelves··on Evidence.dev – Business Intelligence as Code
Wow. This is at just the right level of abstraction for me.
llanowarelves··on My Emacs eye candy
Where is Xah Lee when you need him? His critiques of Emacs on this are spot on, imo. Helps that he backs up his claims (scattered around his site) with data and usability research.

"If emacs just use standard keys for open close save, cut copy paste undo, users will double in 1 year."[0]

llanowarelves··on All Sliders to the Right
Luckily developers tolerate less from other developers (sans Electron, whose existence IMO is justifiably owed to abysmal state of Desktop GUI programming).

We have a bunch of Go and Rust tooling coming out for JS, for example.

llanowarelves··on The day Windows died
Yep.

But since you have it, install Chocolatey, using that to manage these next programs (and more, i try to install all my apps through it):

* Install O&O ShutUp to turn all that garbage off. The suggested settings there are pretty good.

* Everything (yes, "Everything" is the name of the program) for actually useable (and good) search, since Windows search sucks for some reason (I can back up other commenters here).

* Bulk Crap Uninstaller to really uninstall stuff (edit registry and delete leftover program files etc). You can use this to uninstall all the junk Windows installs automatically.

There's lots of others but these are my go to. I have base of a bunch of packages and settings I like.

llanowarelves··on All Sliders to the Right
Look at the ROI. Any amount of performance loss users still tolerate equally, or sufficiently close enough, is prone to be optimized away by trading it away for developer productivity. It's a "supply curve" on a graph.
llanowarelves··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
The reason why they have to at least pretend to play by the rules that are supposed to bind them as much as they do is because legitimacy is what keeps people from quitting the game, bringing it to a halt, and starting their own new games.
llanowarelves··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
It can be very helpful to them as a form of regulatory capture, kicking the ladder down.

It's why Walmart and Amazon were the biggest corporate supporters of raising minimum wage and getting stricter on Internet sales tax.

llanowarelves··on Microsoft's Software Is Malware
Are you saying it makes it easy to maintain patches parallel to the existing software? The difficulty keeping forks up to date (losing maintenance benefits of upstream work) and "re-basing"(?) the custom changes in a clear and clean way is my biggest stumbling block to "just fork it".

Would also be appreciated to see an example.

llanowarelves··on After a decade, South Dakota's Amish are moving on
Your list of the extreme/woo edges is pretty well-rounded but it's Eurocentric and missing a few famous ones like Aum Shinrikyo, Sabbateans/Frankists, cargo cults, voodoo, etc.

Also putting Islam, Catholicism, and LDS in the same list as the others would be like me putting similarly more mainstream Orthodox Jews in that list, just because of some cases of organ trafficking[0] or a "child rape assembly line"[1] in a few churches, or circumcision (which is viewed as genital mutilation in most of the world). And the careful adoption of technology (which I admire for the same reason as Amish). So not really appropriate to cluster more mainstream with the marginal cults side-by-side like that because it's disproportionate.

According to Charol Shakeshaft, the researcher behind the 2004 US Department of Education study[2] (if you can find a newer one, I'd like to see it), educators likely do 10-100x the abuse as priests. She's appeared on Oprah and NPR.

llanowarelves··on Agile Is a Glass Cannon
How management in corporations now use that word has almost nothing to do with what it is supposed to (OODA Loop).
llanowarelves··on Sex worker-led payment platform shuts down after being cut off by processor
May as well get ahead of this, every time someone is yoinked from a platform:

"If you don't like it, build your own <piece of underlying infrastructure>". [repeat recursively].

More productive comment: protocols > platforms.

Do the 50% of all small businesses that had to permanently close fit into your definition of "everyone"?
llanowarelves··on Godot Arrives in the Epic Games Store
I appreciate it. I never used Godot. That makes sense. I thought you meant more like asset compression/conversion (images, audio, etc.).
llanowarelves··on Godot Arrives in the Epic Games Store
Can you explain a bit more about the asset pipeline?
llanowarelves··on My thoughts on “bad code”
Problem is even if your manager's manager understands the value of it, his manager's manager doesn't, so time spent on it is seen as wasteful or "doing nothing" versus duct-taping things together for some poor sap to have to refactor ("for free") under pressure while implementing more features non-technical PMs or managers want ASAP.

You have to be skilled at office politics or make sacrifices to keep code quality high. Usually not worth it. You get yelled at less if you externalize all the costs to future suckers, instead of trying to reduce those costs upfront.

llanowarelves··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
All depends. No doubt the fringe is fixating on the 0.1% that doesn't make a difference.

When it comes to hardware: if you have a great and clean signal chain, good ears, decent monitors +/ good room, good headphones, you can record and hear the difference of good gear (diminishing returns though, you are paying for throughput (channels), latency, or even just build-quality/brand (Apple esque) etc at some point).

Of course marketing adds hyperbole and takes certain aspects into woo territory. At the software level: sampling rate can (depending on programming of individual plugins) make a difference in your mixing session (you get nasty artifacts, like EQ cramping, in plugins that don't have internal over-sampling).

This is all the professional gear with a track record rather than the "prosumer" gear (maybe that's the definition of audiophile you were connotating).

I want this for TypeScript, but also for C#, and C++, who have all been modernizing quite quickly.
llanowarelves··on AirPods causing tinnitus?
Thanks for that update, I heard about it only once years ago. Yeah safest thing is to assume it can't come back, and be aware of the accumulation, as you said.
llanowarelves··on AirPods causing tinnitus?
Hearing loss is very serious. You know your body better than anyone else so don't be afraid to be its biggest advocate and protector. Nobody else will.

I once had tinnitus for a week after a concert and it was one of the worst weeks of my life, it felt like it would last forever (and for some people, it does). I had pristine, "golden ears" for audio engineering and was afraid about how much I'd be able to recover. I missed even the boring high pitched squeaks of doorknobs, faucets, etc. Everything was muffled. Since then, I've been wearing Etymotic earplugs at concerts (the few I went to).

There is research on proper restoration of the cilia (ear hair that allows us to hear), but we don't know if it's a "hardware" problem (these hairs), "software" problem (brain), or both, in what amounts. So it's far away (EDIT: if it's even possible at all...). Hearing aids are not something you want to fall back on. It's not like eyes with glasses and contacts. Be careful.

llanowarelves··on Live2D Is a Security Trainwreck
Live 2D pricing for SDK was/is also ridiculous, as published on their site.

I did the math a while back and they do by region, platform, etc - multiplied together (adds up quickly) and tiered by revenue.

So if you want all regions and platforms, for a company making about $100k a year revenue (whatever the tier was in Yen), they want about 50% of your revenue.

I brought it up with sales rep and he admitted it didn't sound right and conceded that's what it came out to, and that I can negotiate. Very strange stuff

llanowarelves··on The EU's new Cyber Resilience Act is about to tell us how to code
Good to have standards, best practices, warranties, accreditations etc.

But then there's a whole industries of middle-men who don't build and by most accounts don't add any value (other than keeping you out of jail due to the laws they themselves pushed) -- who love the boring and start licking their lips at the possibilities. Combine with revolving door, regulatory capture, lawfare etc to take your competitors out.

So that's what this article is about. We need details to know which side of the line we're walking on. Maybe this was better not as a response to you but I already started typing it lol.

llanowarelves··on All you may need is HTML
I like it because it means they will never be my competition for anything but incredibly niche/domain-specific boomer software people have no choice but to begrudgingly use.
llanowarelves··on You don't need a build step
Try Deno anyway, if you haven't. The DX is very nice. I am very fast at cranking out small CLI tools -- and it gives binaries. Though sometimes I debate if Python is better for these tools, since it's so easy to get something going there too. For a JS maximalist stack, Deno no question.
