literallyaduck··on Strengthening our efforts against the spread of non-consensual intimate images
Would it not be easy to stop the spread of intimate images through your platform?

If you have a platform for "intimate" images maybe have a record on file that shows everyone is of age and consents. If an image, or video providence can not be confirmed you don't put it up for consumption. There is no shortage of "intimate" images and it would not present a hardship or be a barrier to entry to those that want to produce or consume the content. Please, explain how it is ethical to do otherwise.

literallyaduck··on Is Google Search Deteriorating? Measuring Google's Search Quality in 2022
Go to image search and type in "white people" without quotes.

Now repeat the search but with "black people" without quotes.

Try the same for "white couple" without quotes.

Try the same for "black couple" without quotes.

Do you have any insight to this phenomenon?

literallyaduck··on Imagine another American Civil War, but this time in every state
Nonconcensual government has no place in modern society. Most people are born into countries and it makes sense to have a regular opt in vote to continue.

Most "civilized" people will starve or die horrible deaths if the current cold civil war goes hot. People who don't know how to grow crops, hunt, fish, or setup logistic pipelines. The side has military backing will end up killing a lot of people until one side gives up and by that time China and Russia will win. An armed conflict is a real loser for everyone. Lots of Americans on either side are armed and obstinate and it will get ugly fast. It might be time to visit a friendly foreign country until it all blows over, just don't expect much to come back to, wars are ugly things, and civil wars are often worse.

The only question is are we going to be flexible enough to let people go their own ways peacefully or try to hug a mountain lion until it hugs us back? The cart is being pulled in two directions and a peaceful legal separation is much better than the alternative.

No one is going to counseling and "live and let live" is dead. Irreconcilable differences between at least two factions exist.

Then could they yeet the old one into the sausage grinder and transplant a fresh one. It could even be a nice 12 year ritual, pay 1 million dollars for the most expensive sausage you'll ever eat.

literallyaduck··on Google Had Secret Project to ‘Convince’ Employees ‘That Unions Suck’
Google/Alphabet needs to be broken apart: "The National Labor Relations Act forbids employers from interfering with, restraining, or coercing employees in the exercise of rights relating to organizing, forming, joining or assisting a labor organization for collective bargaining purposes, or from working together to improve terms and conditions of employment, or refraining from any such activity. Similarly, labor organizations may not restrain or coerce employees in the exercise of these rights."
literallyaduck··on noDRM's GitHub repo DeDRM_tools is disabled due to Readium's DMCA notice
Stop thinking of github as source control. It is source out of your control.

Decentralized source code is required.

If another entity can ninja commit to your repo with a bot it isn't your repo.

If your code can be taken down by a corporation or government, it isn't your repo.

literallyaduck··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
Work to specification while you find a new job. Get the requirements via email or send a confirmation email for anything that you believe might be an "offhand remark".

The market is hot and jobs are currently plentiful.

Realize that a lot of the tech world reads this site so be careful.

A name generator makes the cattle herdable. Humans may remember zombie-wombat-kitten but not 3991. You might not ever interact with the machine directly but if you are hunting down an issue from log files it reduces cognitive load.
literallyaduck··on New York City will make it mandatory for companies to post salaries on job ads
Let's take this nation wide. Why was everyone's time and interview hoops for jobs that don't pay competitive rates? Why should loyal employees stick with pay rates that are less than new hires?
literallyaduck··on Seattle police faked radio chatter about Proud Boys during 2020 protests
Have you demanded Capitol Police Lieutenant Michael Byrd be charged for killing an unarmed woman? Have you demanded equality for the tourists, because previously AOC joined the Sunrise Movement at Pelosi's office:

In a response to the protests, Pelosi said in a statement that she was "inspired by the energy and activism of the many young activists and advocates leading the way on the climate crisis."

"I have recommended to my House Democratic colleagues that we reinstate the select committee to address the climate crisis," she said in the statement. "We welcome the presence of these activists, and we strongly urge the Capitol Police to allow them to continue to organize and participate in our democracy."

literallyaduck··on Ask HN: How do I write clean and maintainable code
From an interviewed side:

Ask open ended questions.

Examples: Tell me about a time, describe a situation where, what steps have you taken, the more they talk the better chance you have to assess them.

From an interviewee side: be prepared to describe situation where you maintained and application what safeguards you put in place, keep everything pleasant and remember to smile as people can hear it in your voice even if there is no video feed. Feign passion if you must. The whole process is a sales pitch and you are selling yourself, toot your own horn and make mountains of every little molehill of a project you have been part of. Talk about your commitment to testing and know the test pyramid, flip the interview around and ask them questions, it throws them off their guard and they will be impressed. The one who betrays the most information loses.

literallyaduck··on Ask HN: How do I write clean and maintainable code
Maintainable code is a fools errand people just need the lingo for the interview, people don't stay at the same job long enough to really worry about it long term. People ship the one to throw away then the next devs rewrite everything their foredevs wrote. Languages, databases and standards are moving targets and today's best practice is tomorrow's antipattern.

If you want to ensure that you hire devs who have longevity in your product only hire devs who have worked in the same place long enough to pay for their coding choices and ask them for specific times they had technical debt and what steps they took to remedy the problem. You will find out more by letting them talk.

literallyaduck··on Airbnb's experiment in combatting rental bias means swapping names for initials
KYC is an unescapable federal requirement, for the home owners who rent out their homes and a non-US based company has no obligation to follow US guidelines around discrimination unless a treaty forces their hand.

I wouldn't rent my home out to anyone no matter the skin color, religion, or genders, and frankly it is a bit gross for hotels, hostels and BNBs to exist. If you can't avoid travel camping keeps you at arms length from mingling with other humans filth. Weather might prohibit your options, but I'm a firm believer that "Hell is other people."

literallyaduck··on Airbnb's experiment in combatting rental bias means swapping names for initials
Vrbo, HomeAway, Stayz, Booking.com or others may fill the gap, and some house loaners might attempt to use KYC to identify customers prior to doing business.
literallyaduck··on Ask HN: How to continue to be gracious about the good fortune of rich friends?
Start a business and ask them to invest. Call them if they refuse. Either you become rich like them or they stop answering your calls. I would never loan a friend money, or go into business with them. As far as money goes why do you think you would be happy with more when you aren't with what you have now.

Relatively speaking anyone in the modern western world has it pretty nice in comparison.

Enjoy life, learn to cook and laugh at people going to restaurants. If cooking and eating aren't your things, find what is and enjoy it, money is becoming less and less important to living a rich and enjoyable life.

literallyaduck··on Top Canadian museum to be imminently gutted in the name of 'decolonization'
We should probably do the same with our museums, art exhibits, libraries, and remove all books because those are the words of the oppressor. Arabian numerals should be rejected as the Arab Slave Trade was a large part of slavery. Math in general should be reconsidered because it divides us.
literallyaduck··on Update: iPhone Camera app did not replace person's head with a leaf
You mean people haven't been holding the leaning tower of Pisa all this time. I am shocked!

I've seen some strange things from stitching photos for panoramic, it isn't a huge leap of logic to think some compression or interpolation algorithm went wrong.

Glad to know it was a problem of perspective.

Understand concepts and removing bias are totally different.

It is also clear that digital photography from phones is far from an accurate representation of events.

literallyaduck··on Reporter likely to be charged for using “view source” feature on web browser
It was more than "View Source". It was decoding viewstate.

Reading someone's postcard in the mailbox is like looking at the source.

He opened the letter that was in the encoded viewstate.

The envelope doesn't offer any real security but it is illegal to open someone else's mail, and decoding a site's viewstate might technically be illegal as well, but unless you tell someone you did it no one will know.

The reporter should have notified them directly, anonymously, or kept their mouth shut.

If you send information to the client, it is your responsibility to make sure it doesn't contain private information.

The reporter should probably not be prosecuted, pardoned if convicted, and we should repeal the laws that make using anything sent to client illegal.

If you are sent something you didn't order in the mail the FTC says you don't have to pay:

https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-do-if-youre-bille...

"By law, companies can’t send unordered merchandise to you, then demand payment. That means you never have to pay for things you get but didn’t order. You also don’t have to return unordered merchandise. You’re legally entitled to keep it as a free gift."

This reporter was gifted some viewstate because it came to his computer.

Edit:

To the person claiming it is "another language", I don't know anyone that does Base64 decoding in their head, and this is clearly not meant for human consumption.

Here is what viewstate is:

http://www.nullskull.com/articles/20060208.asp

There are many tools for consuming it through decoding and deserializing but that doesn't make it legal. There are tools for decoding DVDs which meet this same category.

literallyaduck··on iPhone camera app replaces person’s head with a leaf in photo
Remember the Rittenhouse trial and the big to do about the video being enhanced when zoomed? Digital evidence and photos are suspicious for the purpose of evidence. Not commenting on the results of the trial.

Sidebar not specific to that trial, slow motion, and slowed video shouldn't be shown to jurors because it creates the illusion of having more time to think. Everything in real life happens at one speed, you can't back it up, slow it down, or armchair qb it then decide if an action was appropriate.

literallyaduck··on Ask HN: Why do so many developers seem hostile to their users these days?
Pretend you are a developer at X. You work from a backlog. You are judged versus your peers by how many items of value are worked. Optimizing for writing code wins over other optimization strategies. Npm install your way to features is cheaper for you personally compared to writing optimized compact unitasking code. It is understandable by other developers and wins you that exceeds expectations rank come review time.

literallyaduck··on A Culture Problem in Arch Linux
Sometimes you will find merchants at the bazaar who insult the customer. Rather than change something that doesn't match your needs why not find one of the thousand other distros? I don't believe every community follows the rtfm attitude, and many work quite well. Sorry you had a bad experience. A lot of the documentation exists for the product because of high strung elitists and they will not be friendly, but that is what a lot of people associate with Arch brand. I think you will find highly skilled Gentoo users, which might not have as much of the attitude.

TLDR Expecting a community to change for you is unrealistic.
