liorben-david··on Topological Deep Learning: A Survey on Topological Neural Networks
The paper seems to be using homology as the topological feature here. I've done some work in Topological Data Analysis before and it feels like the hidden issue is that computing homology is generally very inefficient(Since it usually amounts to reducing an nxn matrix).

It definitely feels like graphs/topology should be helpful tools to work with data(Since graph-like structures are good representations of the real world), but we need to solve this efficiency issue before this can be possible.

Also to address the confusion on how category theory comes into it, category theory studies abstract structures where you have objects and relationships between these objects. A lot of algebraic topology(Which is the sort of topology relevant here) is built in the language of category theory(Either by neccesity or by convention).

liorben-david··on Google will delete location history data for abortion clinic visits
I think the idea is that while any person could probably connect the dots, in a courtroom the fact that they were around the clinic is purely circumstantial and therefore insufficient to prove someone got an abortion.
liorben-david··on Documenting Aramaic before its native speakers vanish (2013)
Not sure why he omits this, but the author's name is Ariel Sabar and his father is Yona Sabar who is the one of the most influential scholars in the preservation of Aramaic.

I would highly recommend Ariel's book, My Father's Paradise. It documents the life of his father being born into the poor and uneducated, but happy, Jewish community of Kurdish Iraq, being stripped of his property and exiled by the Iraqi government as part of the Jewish exodus in the 50s, and going from a refugee to a PHD in Linguistics from Yale.

liorben-david··on Documenting Aramaic before its native speakers vanish (2013)
I think you're reading too much into the omission of historical narrative in this particular article about linguistics. The author, Ariel Sabar, wrote an entire book about his father's forced exile from his native Kurdistan by the Iraqi government.

liorben-david··on DALL-E Is Now Generating Realistic Faces of Fake People
Additionally, being able to give faces to people who want to remain anonymous without having to disclose that they are anonymous. Could be helpful for certain confidential reporting scenarios
liorben-david··on DALL-E Is Now Generating Realistic Faces of Fake People
One idea that comes to mind is using it for police lineups. Instead of bringing in a handful of random people that aren't suspects, maybe you show pictures of the suspect alongside people that don't actually exist.

More generally, tasks that require the use of people for purely visual aspects(think extras in movies) could easily be made more efficient for this sort of thing.

liorben-david··on Do corporate tax cuts boost economic growth?
Not too suprising.

For any small(As in mom and pop shop) corp, any changes in corporate tax is just going to result in the owner taking a different salary/profit mix to account for it. For large corps, not paying out significant dividends is becoming more acceptable and these corps are making decisions on a time-frame longer than a corp-tax rate remains stable.

Now in reality I think drastic changes in the tax rate would make a difference but moving it a couple percentage points like we've been doing wouldn't cause any incentive shift

liorben-david··on Give Kids the Right to Vote
I think some of the examples cited by the author make me more confident that kids shouldn't vote.

Specifically the fact that those with dementia can have someone assist them in voting. That seems kind of ridiculous to me, seeing how easy it is for relatives to take advantage of this.

If you aren't cognitively independent then you shouldn't be able to vote. Lower it to 16? That's not that outrageous. But allow a five year old to vote with their parents help? You're just giving two votes to a parent at that point

This is the equivalent of never washing your hands to build up immunity. You're just spending more time and energy to solve a problem that the tool can solve for you.

Are you more independent for it? Sure, I guess. But I'd rather be efficient then get brownie points

liorben-david··on Congress Likely to Pass $550B Infrastructure Bill That Threatens to Kill Crypto
It threatens to kill anonymity in crypto transactions. Definetly not a good thing but I'm also not sure if that means it is going to "kill crypto".

I don't know enough about the mining compliance hurdles to really judge that part of it though. If it truly bans mining than it just means the end of Bitcoin and other PoW coins

I'm with you, it's more just telling that these companies say they want to take down hateful speech, but anti-semetism always seems to be the exception. If I was setting their content policy I would allow it to, but something is off about claiming to be stop hatred but turning a blind eye to jews.
