linuxlizard··on The Rise and Fall of the 'IBM Way'
My first computer was also an IBM PS/2 Model 25. Was an amazing little machine. I ran Turbo Pascal on it for my undergrad CS degree. Great times.
linuxlizard··on Officially Qualified – Ferrocene
I'm very excited about this. Having a vendor supported toolchain means I might be able to bring Rust into where I work. Embedded companies are very conservative and risk adverse. Have a commercial package with LTS and certifications addresses some of the concerns.
linuxlizard··on Will workers hired as Remote all be laid off in next wave?
Every place I've ever worked before, the first people laid off were always the remote people. Working remote, to me, is being layoff bait.
linuxlizard··on Homes “unaffordable” in 99% of nation for average American
I have a modest proposal. We (USA) could send our retirees to China which would fill up some of the overabundance of housing there while releasing housing here. An article floated by a while ago saying Boomers are the fastest growing homeless demographic.

My wife & I (no kids) rode the Empire Builder over Thanksgiving last year. We rode Chicago to Seattle over the course of 3-4 days. We had a roomette (private room with two beds and a shower). There is so much space on board in the viewing car and the dining car, I would think kids would have enough space to burn off their energy. We had an amazing time and want to do another multi-day trip like that.

I loved the Cobalt Cube! Such an awesome bit of hardware and software.
linuxlizard··on New x86 8U servers with 32TB RAM, 480 physical cores, 15 PCIe x16 slots, 400GbE
I need one of these machines for Yocto. Actually, maybe two of them.

linuxlizard··on Satellites reveal widespread decline in global lake water storage
When water gets in short enough supply, we will burn coal, garbage, tires, anything to power desalination plants.

"There is a large community inside Microsoft using Linux as their daily driver. " That's pretty cool to hear! (100% honest. No sarcasm.)
linuxlizard··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
Sadly, mathematics classes are like that as well. Instructors start throwing equations on the board, expecting us to somehow connect it all together. The best math textbook (Theory of Algebra) I ever read had little sections about the person who revealed a particular subject, why they were studying it, and how the subject is used.

Blue Noise dithering based on a HN post from @todsacerdoti. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25633483 At my previous job we had an ASIC hardware block to implement blue noise dithering. No one, even the people who created it, could explain to me how I needed to use it. Years latter, I read their blog post and a light bulb went on.
linuxlizard··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
Sorry. You did say that already. I will. Thank you!
linuxlizard··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
Yes. I do this. I have all my financial account numbers and passwords written on a piece of paper stored in my safe deposit box. If anything happens to me (knocks wood), my family will still be ok.
linuxlizard··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
Those are all good selling points for me. Thank you! I'm building the Linux version now.

linuxlizard··on Ask HN: Who Remembers “Abort. Retry. Fail?”
I was a big fan of SAFARI. Popped up that big scary red screen with lots of interesting info.
linuxlizard··on US Army Publishing Directorate – Technical Manuals
I am puzzled why there are only 141 documents. There should be thousands. The US Army has been around a long time and bureaucracy begets documentation.

You joke, but I worked on a GPS app that would crash when crossing over the zero meridian. We didn't handle negative zero. The Degree/Minute/Second (DMS) near the meridian will be +/- 0 when degrees is zero. Signed zero is a thing.

That's not just a stupid story, that's an awesome stupid story.
linuxlizard··on MS Teams Linux client is being retired. To be replaced by a progressive web app
I'm quite impressed at how nice WSL is. It's very snappy, great internetworking with the host Windows, and is kept up-to-date. The only thing it's missing, for me, is nl80211 support (I do wifi) and usb-serial. I do a lot of console app dev in WSL regardless.
linuxlizard··on MS Teams Linux client is being retired. To be replaced by a progressive web app
Lots of vitriol in this thread. Wow.

I'm grateful that Microsoft is giving Linux desktop a shot. Thanks for remembering us! (No sarcasm. I'm really impressed at how well Office works in Firefox-Linux.)

I hacked the code, built my own version so I wouldn't take damage. I still kept dying of starvation. That game does not mess around.

SKU Stock Keeping Unit. Sorry. Vs Skew. I probably am using the word "SKU" wrong but it's what we called the slight variations of product.

Several years ago I worked for a company that made a usb+network and usb-only skew of their product. The usb-only boards were the same as the usb+network boards with a few parts not populated.

We started getting tech support complaints when we sold the product into China. Turns out, an enterprising vendor bought a single usb+network printer, desoldered the EEPROM (containing the ethernet mac address). Then that vendor bought usb-only (cheaper) products, added the additional parts and bulk copied the single eeprom image (with the mac address) onto the new products, selling them as the more expensive usb+network sku. Result: a dozen+ of our product running on the LAN with the same mac address.
