That’s what I get too
linux2647··on The Raspberry Pi 5 Is No Match for a Tini-Mini-Micro PC
Though a fan is recommended for the 4 and 5 models
linux2647··on Scientists have traced human tail loss to a short sequence of genetic code

For those who’d never heard of that before, ToastyTech has a screenshot: http://toastytech.com/guis/auxcmdo-ls.png

linux2647··on Software Applications Incorporated
Holy crap. MacOS emulation has gotten really good. I’m amazed how easily I was able to navigate the desktop from my phone. What’s powering this?
linux2647··on River: A fast, robust job queue for Go and Postgres
Is there a minimum version of Postgres needed to use this? I’m having trouble finding that information in the docs
linux2647··on Banging errors in Go
But that’s part of the value proposition of Go: that it’s a small(-ish) language. I like that it lacks magic found in many other languages. Though I concede that the “simplicity” sometimes comes at the expense of developer ergonomics
linux2647··on Reflect – Multiplayer web app framework with game-style synchronization
The demo at the top of the homepage (https://reflect.net/) is a lot of fun. While I was watching, every time the puzzle got completed, people would shake their cursor in excitement, like saying, "yay we did it!!"
linux2647··on Some Pixel owners still can't dial 911 during an emergency
A bit OT: but TIL you can schedule a test 911 call.
linux2647··on Control Center on macOS is always re-rendering its SwiftUI causing 1% CPU load
And written using Mac APIs, not Electron
linux2647··on Modern genetic data suggests pre-humans were a group of only 1,280 individuals
Everyone being descended from Adam and Eve
linux2647··on I'm 17 and wrote this guide on how CPUs run programs
> The envp argument contains another null-terminated list of environment variables used as context for the application. They’re… conventionally KEY=VALUE pairs. Conventionally.

TIL! It seems a lot of (newer) programming languages make this assumption.

> …I love computers.

Me too, kid. Me too.

linux2647··on Water
Followed by a string of “+1”s
linux2647··on Error Handling in Zig
IIRC, part of the language proposal to make errors wrappable in Go’s stdlib included a stack trace. And indeed github.com/pkg/errors includes that. But it never made it into the stdlib implementation
linux2647··on North American English Dialects
I’m not sure the pin/pen merger is a thing in the California San Joaquin Valley. I’ve only lived here for a few years and not heard the merger, and my wife–born and raised here–says them differently
linux2647··on Predictive Debugging: A Game-Changing Look into the Future
Their Fleet IDE is exactly that. It’s in development right now, but a public beta is available: https://www.jetbrains.com/fleet/

Edit: I just realized you meant the opposite, where the IDE is just a language server. Fleet is an IDE that uses language servers

linux2647··on What gets to the front page of Hacker News?
Case in point: TFA was submitted five days ago[0] and barely got any upvotes. Now this second submission has over 100 upvotes and made the front page

linux2647··on Things that surprised me while running SQLite in production
FDWs still requires an instance of Postgres to be running. With implementing the Postgres wire protocol, you could theoretically use any Postgres driver to talk to a SQLite database with no client changes and no instance of Postgres
linux2647··on Gopher Wrangling: Effective error handling in Go
Ah yeah that’s what I figured. In some of the repos at work, I’ve noticed that some intermediate error messages are identical, which makes it hard to know which error has actually been used.
linux2647··on Gopher Wrangling: Effective error handling in Go
Is that a real stack trace, or just a trace of error message wrapping? I haven’t figured out how to extract a real error message using Go stdlib
linux2647··on Make your own VPN with Fly.io, tailscale and GitHub
TIL the `until` shell syntax: https://github.com/patte/fly-tailscale-exit/blob/main/start....
linux2647··on Like the macOS Dock but for macOS System 7
MacOS traditionally used `\r` for line endings. Unix (and thus macOS 10+) uses `\n` and Windows `\r\n`. Github isn't properly recognizing the files have classic MacOS line endings
linux2647··on Show HN: I Scraped Hacker News for TLD Popularity
> Wrong links: http://blog.plover.com./prog/lib.html

That’s technically not incorrect. Host names, as far as DNS is concerned, always have a trailing “.” And my browser resolves the URL just fine

linux2647··on Four ways to build web apps
Example: you don’t need AWS keys to write to SQS because the EC2 instance has an identity (“principal”) applied to it, and SQS has been configured trust requests from said identity for some set of queues. It’s typically cloud-specific in the implementation and the resources being requested
linux2647··on Purego – A library for calling C functions from Go without Cgo
My read of the library is it only works the other way: you could import a Python library from Go
linux2647··on Erlang: The coding language that finance forgot (2022)
What industry/domain is the software you write in?
linux2647··on A Visual Guide to SSH Tunnels: Local and Remote Port Forwarding
Your machine can also act as a bastion to a remote resource for the rest of your network through local port forwarding, e.g. -L 0.0.0.0:8080:localhost:8080

Then any local machine can e.g. curl yourip:8080 and the request will go through your machine, over the SSH tunnel, to the remote machine

linux2647··on Step by step guide to becoming a modern back end developer in 2023
Yes, among other topics: https://roadmap.sh/roadmaps/
linux2647··on Reverse Engineering TikTok's VM Obfuscation
IIRC not exactly. YouTube provides some arbitrary JavaScript that must be evaluated as a form of a challenge. It changes with every page request, but it’s just a set of math operations. It’s easier to evaluate the JS than to statically analyze it
