linmob··on Back to Android for the time being
As a person that spends way too much time on these efforts[0], here's what makes the phone still worthwhile to me despite being slow and at times buggy: It's nice to be in an ecosystem that does not have ad frameworks, that does not nudge you into using iCloud or where you have to use Play Services (or invest time into building around not having them (and more than once, did that for years)) for apps to work properly.

(That aside, I have not had the problems OP describes - but the worst problems with PinePhone (outside of highly experimental software) I suffered through where with Manjaro.)

Definitely, the GNU/Linux software stack needs improvement for everything that's not a UVC Webcam. libcamera is a relevant project in that context. Purism, who make the Librem 5, are working on that - they have a paid team, but it's small so this will take a bit.

That said, the PinePhone camera app, Megapixels, recently got better post-processing thanks to postprocessd, which may have landed in OPs Manjaro or not.

linmob··on IceWM 3.0.0 Release
It‘s feels humbling to see projects one vaguely remembers from using them for a while around 2000 on some slow Pentium still being around and managing to put out major releases.

(I almost could not believe it, checked Wikipedia and found out that Ice WM started in 1997, 25 years ago.)

Yes, a fun form-factor! The EOMA68 project tried to re-use it for a compute module [0], but sadly ran out of money before shipping.

I‘ve heard PinePhone, so I need to a) tell you about one of my little projects, LinuxPhoneApps [1], and b) tell you that it allows to filter by programming language [2]. To date, most Rust apps we list use GTK, three use Kirigami (via Corrosion IIRC), and one uses iced.

I am really happy they are is committed to that, but boy is that tone not called for. Yes, Chris is a GNOME dev, but I've been following him for a long time and so far I never saw him spread FUD.

The same is true with an Adwaita theme for KDE/Qt Apps. I used to do this on both, Plasma and GNOME.

These days I style my Qt/KDE apps all Breeze on GNOME and vice versa when I am on KDE, because unfortunately icon sets just don’t match up and I've run into 'invisible buttons' issues way to often.

As long as both are in dark/light mode I find this way less annoying than having to hope for a good enough tooltip on mouse over (or just tap and see on mobile).

Pop!_OS is still based on Ubuntu, so I doubt that they are going to ship unpatched upstream GTK, it's more likely going to be patched by Canonical.
linmob··on Google loses EU appeal and is fined a record $4B
Ubuntu Touch is still around, see [0]. That said, with continued funding by Canonical, they like would have progressed differently (likely more).

Firefox OS and webOS are still around under different names, which are Capyloon [1] and LuneOS respectively [2].

linmob··on gPodder: A simple, open-source podcast client
Today, there‘s an adaptive variant of GPodder[0] so that people with PinePhone, Librem 5 or ported Android phones running Linux Mobile can use GTK-based GPodder on mobile.

(This does not matter in terms of numbers, as that‘s at best a few thousand people, but still.)

linmob··on Tell HN: Using beta hardware/software is the worst possible idea
That's sad to hear, and I would love to know the details (Which OS are you running? What did you attempt to upgrade?).

Regarding your conclusion, I totally agree: Don't have only one device, make sure to have a backup. IMHO this also applies to regular (Android, iOS) smartphones, too - device failure of mobile devices is just one fatal motion, one time of not paying enough attention away.

linmob··on I Love My PinePhone
Not sure if there’s any objective measurement for what most people daily driving the PinePhone use - in my personal count postmarketOS (I do hope they stick to stable ;-)) with Sxmo was quite vocal and not rare, followed by Mobian with Phosh and postmarketOS with Phosh.
linmob··on I Love My PinePhone
Which OS are you using? Did you try biktorgj's Modem Firmware (and additionally, the various proprietary releases, to see which one works best with your carrier)?
linmob··on I Love My PinePhone
That's something I really should try to measure. I would guess that it lasts a bit longer than two hours; definitely way longer than my PinePhone Pro. Battery life totally could be better (one coukld also see it as a feature to not mindlessly be on the phone all day), like OP I really hope for a battery case that's not as bulky as the keyboard case.
linmob··on I Love My PinePhone
> Honestly, try browsing the web for a few minutes and it gets uncomfortably hot.

I really haven't had that experience in quite a while. I am mostly running DanctNIX or postmarketOS 22.06 with Phosh and browse with Firefox (with uBlock Origin - I also have a second Firefox profile that has NoScript installed for sites that just have too much janky JavaScript) or Epiphany.

It may help that the south of Germany is not super hot (just hot) and that I use Biktorgj's Modem firmware.

Edit, example: I am writing this in Firefox on postmarketOS while having 4 other tabs open and also two more apps (Tootle and Secrets), and the phone isn't even slightly warm.

linmob··on I Love My PinePhone
I have both (Book & Phone), and AFAIK they both run at 1.15 GHz. I agree that they aren't slow if you adjust workloads and maybe expectations, but seemingly many commenters here (but also on, e.g., YouTube) aren't willing to do that.
linmob··on I Love My PinePhone
Different priorities don't make OP disingenuous. If you want to run a mostly free software stack and Emacs, LineageOS is definitely way worse than PinePhone [1].

Alarms do work, OP just missed the apps that make it possible: https://linuxphoneapps.org/categories/alarm-clock/

Regarding connectivity: This really seems to depend on the hardware revision (OP's braveheart edition was the first available to the general public), the proprietary bits of the modem firmware, your carrier and maybe a bit luck: I am having less connectivity issues on my PinePhone than on my iPhone 13 mini. Seriously.

linmob··on I Love My PinePhone
Might be a hardware issue. I only have later revision PinePhones and am typing this reply with Squeekboard just fine.
linmob··on I Love My PinePhone
For those not familiar with PinePhone things: This blog post is about an early hardware revision, the Braveheart edition, which has quite a few hardware flaws that have been fixed since (see [1] for details). In particular, I've never seen that Squeekboard issue on my v1.2 and v1.2a revision PinePhones.

Edit: Also, if you want to follow the topic of GNU-like Linux on mobile hardware, you may like my blog https://linmob.net

If you wonder about apps for postmarketOS, Mobian etc.: I am also maintaining a project that attempts to list them all (and that needs your contribution): https://linuxphoneapps.org

linmob··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
Some apps exist: https://linuxphoneapps.org (Contributions welcome!)

They aren't all perfect, but TBH, I would get by. I only miss Threema to switch fully at this point (which I've migrated many of my contacts too, so that's on me), but as work on a Matrix-bridge is ongoing there's a lot of hope. (I could also just use Waydroid + the Android app to fill this gap, but… that kills the battery (at least for the PinePhone).

linmob··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
Things keep improving, slowly but surely. BTW: Mepo is a mapping app that performs great on the PinePhone: https://sr.ht/~mil/Mepo/
linmob··on Pine64’s response to “Why I left Pine64”
You could also get a second-hand PinePhone (just buy postmarketOS CE or later to avoid bad hardware bugs).

Regarding other postmarketOS supported devices, I quite like the Xiaomi Pocophone F1 and the OnePlus 6 - but be aware that bootloader unlock on the Xiaomi is a bit painful and charging on the OnePlus 6 is really slow (although that might have been fixed lately/be fixed soon).

linmob··on Why I left Pine64
IIRC it was something about personal and/or business relationships and commitment of resources. Actually, going with Manjaro was only half of what made me question the decision: At the time, when PINE64 introduced the "Beta Edition" Plasma Mobile was still quite bad (it improved a lot since).
linmob··on The Pine Formula
My bank (comdirect in Germany) fortunately has an okay mobile-friendly website and sells a tiny hardware device to generate the "TAN" for their weird proprietary way to secure transactions.
linmob··on Announcing Apache OpenOffice 4.1.13
So… one 2011 article is enough to condemn The Document Foundation and Libre Office forever? That’s basically a century in Internet Years ago!
linmob··on The 13-Inch MacBook Air
I wrote my Thesis in LibreOffice in 2019 on a 2015 MacBook Air, with Zotero integration. It was pretty nice, and thanks to MacOS even coming back just fine, document open and no line lost after me being too stupid to plug my Mac into power, it was a pretty great experience.

> In regard to womens rights, viable unborn woman have the right not to be killed in the womb- which includes the vast majority of abortions currently being performed.

So it’s mostly female fetus that are being aborted? That sounds awfully sexist.

> This is the correct moral position to take, and has nothing to do with fascism.

Surprising that you think so. /s

I don’t think it will help anyone to continue this argument, so let’s just agree to disagree.

BTW: Vandalizing synagogues (or other religious places) is not okay/never okay - so maybe there’s something we actually agree on.

linmob··on Linux Sucks 2022
Actually I don’t agree with calling him a fascist - I could have made that more clear.

That said, with Lunduke being one of the people that are unable to respect women's rights enough, and thus keep calling all abortions murder, I just can’t enjoy/watch his content any more. That viewpoint is just too reactionary for me. That’s my truth.

(Regard Portland: No idea what’s going on there; I am European and have never been to the US West Coast.)
