lindauer··on Bayesian analysis suggests that John Lennon wrote the music for 'In My Life'
Lennon and McCartney took equal credit for every song, regardless of who actually wrote what. In some cases, it’s come out who the real songwriter was. In this case, there was disagreement.
lindauer··on AthenaX – Uber Engineering’s Open Source Streaming Analytics Platform
Can anyone comment on how this compares to KSQL[1]?

lindauer··on S.F. ballot measure would severely limit short-term rentals
Yes. It reduces supply in the long-term housing market by taking a unit that otherwise be permanently occupied and renting it out short-term. I like staying in STR's when I travel, but I think this is a case where some regulation is reasonable. Hotel rates are so much higher than long-term rental rates on a nightly basis that there's a strong market incentive to use your property as an STR rather than LTR.
lindauer··on Nomorobo
It's about time that somebody built something like this. Nomorobo maintains a robocaller blacklist and uses the simultaneous ring feature of your phone provider. When the call is from a blacklisted number, they answer and immediately hang up.

Here's the article where I found out about it: http://www.today.com/money/free-service-proves-it-can-block-....

lindauer··on How Python became the language of choice for data science
This thread led me to search for updated information about Julia's maturity. I came across a pretty informative post from one of the devs and posted it at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6782015.
lindauer··on Google Search Now Includes Etymology
I think icebraining was referring to your use of "embrace, extend, extinguish", which specifically refers to standards-based technologies.

Not that it makes the sentiment of your comment any less valid. It just isn't exactly the same as the original Microsoft meaning of the phrase.

lindauer··on Startups That Received Investment from In-Q-Tel
Not exactly, IARPA is the intelligence community equivalent of DARPA. I don't think DoD has anything like In-Q-Tel.
lindauer··on The Science of Why We Don’t Believe Science
Do you really think the vaccine-autism thing is a "lefty pop-topic"? As far as I can tell the sets of people who deny climate change science and those who deny vaccine-autism science are nearly disjoint.
lindauer··on Maps That Show How Americans Speak English Differently From Each Other
Roast beef po-boys are a big deal in New Orleans.

lindauer··on Maps That Show How Americans Speak English Differently From Each Other
It's from the Old French crevis or modern French écrevisse, having something to do with crabs, not lobsters.

For what it's worth, it is also spelled, not just pronounced, "crawfish" in Texas and Louisiana.

lindauer··on Linguistics identifies anonymous users
There was a really nice paper at the last IEEE Security & Privacy conference where they did an analysis like this on blog postings.

http://randomwalker.info/publications/author-identification-...

I tried a similar analysis for a class project using Twitter data, and it worked surprisingly well considering the small amount of data in a tweet. Would-be-anonymous posters beware!

lindauer··on Can Darpa fix the Cyber Security ‘Problem From Hell?’
This is reminiscent of the problem laid out in Ken Thompson's "Reflections on Trusting Trust."
