you may say that patents are crimping the "free" market but who is really going to vote to delete those from health care ?

And even if they were removed, there are many other ways the big companies will stifle competition to keep profits high.

Sometimes something bigger than a corporation needs to step in and this IMO is one of those times/places

First of all some people do think food is a right ! Second generally speaking all but the poorest can at least find some kind of food to purchase or get donated even if it's not perfect

For healthcare it's totally different with treatments costing thousands of of dollars plus, doctor visits out of the question without insurance for many (and even with) and monopolies on drugs and treatments contributing to vastly higher prices in the US than many other countries.

We may not have "death panels" but we definitely have insurance "no-men" aplenty (and high deductibles) to effectively deny people (especially the poor) decent care

This article is pretty wrong IMO there is no example in the US of "free-market" care to compare anything to.

I dont believe there would need to be a 20% tax rate increase because we already pay far more per person in the US than anywhere else in the world (mostly)

I think it's mostly not going to work here because a lot of people will have to take paycuts (not just doctors / nurses but "administrators" "billing co-ordinators" drug companies and drug resellers, etc etc ...) always follow the $$$

Honestly if I'm going to risk going to prison/getting prosecuted it's going to be for much more than claiming a $5 lemon wasn't organic and switching the barcode over ...

I had somewhat similar feelings about the taxes (different company) (went from $7M to < $2 over the 6 month lockup period alone!)

Ended up paying a bunch of taxes i likely could have avoided and got something out of it (but it was painful) Now over 10 years on after the "corrections / bubble burst" I'm finally about back where I started ... oh well I guess. I have a house and a job and all my limbs ...

Thats also assuming he was able/willing to exercise a bunch of options when he left or along the way .. likely but given the AMT/Tax implications not necessarily a given

Early employees in a startup I was at that went public in 2001 were making $3-6Million

We went out for $1B though (on raising < $2M of VC money)

Indeed. This exposes the true cost of (something more closely approaching) justice.

People will either pay more taxes to fund it (unlikely) or change their tolerance of what actions they want prosecuted

For me it's not as much about fining them as it is holding the correct people responsible (not just throwing some junior engineer under the bus as usually happens) and making sure it cannot happen again or gets noticed much more quickly

Indeed, and then when you look a little deeper and realize that the goals of the "Justice" system are essentially to "prosecute and convict" as many people as possible and the people who prosecute are almost 100% protected from anything bad they do as long as they are chasing those goals

And then realize that even if it becomes obvious that someone is (or most likely is) innocent or has been pushed into a plea deal to avoid an even longer sentence for something they didn't do

Kind of amazing you can't make an account on 911.com, register your cell phone and home phone #s and put in your preferred language, allergies to medicines, serious illnesses etc and have all that come up to the dispatcher when you call....

I think for smaller companies it could make sense but Netflix is big enough and visible enough that if AWS cut them off, I think you'd see a huge exodus off of AWS of people fearing they would be next ... simply not worth it to Amazon to shoot itself in the foot like that IMO

Samsung Pay has worked great for me at a number of locations. The only issue is one of my cards which I think should work wont register and when I try to pay I always get a fingerprint mismatch initially which takes up some time to do a second try

They actually can if they determine that you possess non-public information which could allow you to gain from the stock in a manner that can be considered "insider trading"

Typically this is only for short periods for higher-up people but it can affect "normal" engineers too (say you do a tech due diligence for an acquisition etc....)
