A couple of my questions I couldn't even try Phind due to 2500 token limit. My query included code with 10,000 tokens, but Phind couldn't handle it. Lastly, the speed is slower than ChatGPT Plus, which is expected because it is paid service.
So, I think examine.com's problems could be beyond google's search algorithm/de-ranking.
www.healthline.com must be winning the SEO game because they are showing up #1 on google, duckduckgo, bing, etc.
A very simple observation is that examine.com is not using good titles for their articles. "Summary of Creatine". It is too generic, and that is causing it to be ranked lower that these other websites which have more specific titles like "Anti-Aging Benefits of Creatine" (lifeextension), or "12 Creatine Benefits + Dosage & Side Effects" (selfhacked).
So, maybe a better title. Or , because this "Summary of Creatine" article is so long, maybe you need multiple summary pages tailored to different purposes, e.g. "Benefits of Creatine", "Side Effects of Creatine", which link into the Creatine research.
I have never been to this examine.com website before, but if every article is like "Summary of X", then I would say you have a problem. You need to match your articles titles to the most likely search phrases.
I can see the effect of the site quality in the search results if I search for something like "creatine benefits". Something like mayoclinic (high reputation) is #7 on google but #13 on duckduckgo. bodybuilding.com (lower reputation) is #10 on google, but #2 on duckduckgo.
selfhacked.com is #20 on google search results, but #4 from duckduckgo
examine.com is #52 on google search results, but #26 from duckduckgo
Google also ranks high results from healthline, webmd, menshealth, gnc, mensjournal, etc.
I can see how the site quality could improve results, but the effectiveness depends on the skill and neutrality of the reviewers, which I wouldn't expect to be that good. And over time it will tend to favor big, old websites, making it difficult for new websites to gain traction, even if their content is superior.
I wish google made this "Quality Search" an option just like "Safe Search". The default can be on, but we should be able to turn this off.
The main advantage of duckduckgo is that they aren't tracking you and the ads they show are just based on the search keywords not based on a digital profile they have compiled like google and facebook.
"This site is blocked due to a security threat that was discovered by the Cisco Umbrella security researchers."
"WhatsApp may be "cheaper" than most rivals: Facebook paid just $30 per Instagram user at the time (the service had 33 million users when Facebook bought it, compared to 150 million today). Facebook is spending $42 per WhatsApp user. But given WhatsApp's enormous user base, its purchase price might be a bargain compared some of its competitors."
"LinkedIn's (LNKD) share price values that professional social network at $153 per user. Twitter trades at $140 per user, and Facebook is at $123. Even at its latest $2 billion valuation, Snapchat trades at $50 per user. (And Snapchat reportedly turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook last year.)"
This reminds me of the dot.com bubble era where prices were justified by comparing to other over inflated stocks.
I'm surprised WhatsApp didn't go IPO. With the relative lack of new tech IPOs, I could have seen WhatsApp IPO at a $50 BLN or maybe even $100 BLN valuation, after analysts hyped it up using the same analysis as above. A case can be made that WhatsApp would have kept growing much faster than Facebook and eclipsed Facebook in a few years time.
Facebook FB 69.63 +1.57 +2.3% closed positive today after opening lower. ($64.50 in afterhours trading)
I'm surprised there isn't more discussion about this on hacker news.
I think it's a joke that FB is worth over 1/3 of GOOG.
I think there are other factors.
1. US effective corporate tax rate has been declining as corporations have found ways to keep profits in offshore tax havens. This is a huge contributor.
See for example this article about AAPL whose effective tax rate is 14% which is much lower than the US nominal corporate tax rate of 35%.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-05-23/apple-tax-rate-igno...
2. Outsourcing to lower cost centers. This is also contributing to lower US wages; If a company can move the work to India, Brazil, China, etc. at a much cheaper cost, they will do that. This has been going on for decades, but advancements in telecommunications and internet has made outsourcing to far away locations more efficient and cost effective over the past 10-15 years.
3. Federal reserve keeping short term rates at 0% and manipulating other fixed income rates with the QE program, e.g. buying $100BLN worth of MBS and US treasuries every month. This had the effect of creating record-low interest rates for corporate and junk bonds. This lowers interest costs for companies and also increases business demand because more companies are able to borrow $$ than otherwise.
Some of the revenues and profits are increased just because corporate and public debt has increased abnormally.
I still like amazon, and still have Amazon Prime, and I am still looking forward to their Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals.
The only scummy part would be if they still charge $39.99/month if you don't cancel / skip / select a shoe, without sending you anything. Compare to Disney Movie of the month club where if you don't make a selection or skip that month, you get sent the "Featured" title for that month. Maybe justfab should send you the shoe of the month if you don't make a selection, or maybe they should send a "beauty gift basket".
Otherwise, it looks legit, if you like this sort of thing.
During dot.com bubble, the short term interest rate was 5%+ in 1998 and 1999, and that didn't stop that bubble. The Fed only belatedly raised rates to 6% in 2000 when the bubble went parabolic.
The Fed is always slow to raise rates, and rates are at 0%. It could be years before we are at 2% rates with FOMC incrementing 0.25% every quarter or so, and 2% rates is still very stimulative. Right now, the Fed isn't even talking about raising interest rates. They have only been talking about reducing the $85 BLN/month $$ printing, but even that is on hold as of the last FOMC meeting where they voted 9 to 1 to not taper.
The Fed still has the pedal to the metal, and have publicly stated they do not see a bubble anywhere (just like they said there was no housing bubble back in 2006-2007). Don't get shaken out of the market just because the Fed talks about tapering its $$ printing from $85BLN/month to $75BLN/month. The current environment is still very stimulative for stocks.
If there is a bubble, it won't pop because of the Fed. It will pop after the momentum is exhausted and it collapses from its own weight.
This is standard practice at grocery stores to put freshest food at the back and soonest to expire in the front. No reason to hate on TJ's on that point.
I'm wondering if just adding reference points along the margin or between lines could accomplish the same thing without having to change the text color. Something similar to the tick marks along a graph axis.
I am using JSON to save structured data for an application, and this is interesting, although my app doesn't spend alot of time encoding/deconding the JSON since the data structures are fairly simple.
If I wanted to use this for Java, wouldn't there still be decode step to convert the fields into java objects?
I use lots of filters and labels to categorize my mail already. I have label 'Shopping' and have a bunch of filters set to skip inbox, so I only see it if I click the 'Shopping' label. This works well for sales emails I am subscribed too, but doesn't help for new sales emails, although most of that ends up in the Spam folder.

I find as more subject specific sites have grown, that generic search like ddg and google aren't as important to me.
I do more searches on sites like stackoverflow, yelp, maps.google.com, tripadivsor, etc. than ddg.
Even when I !g to see google results, I see 100% organic results because I have Adblock Plus plugin installed on firefox. Problem Solved.
Make sure you have 'Hide placeholders of blocked elements' option enabled, otherwise AdBlock will show a blank rectangle where the ads used to be.
The simpler the Saas service, and the lower cost of switching, the more competition and commoditization that may go on. But this article is talking specifically about Saas replacing enterprise software. Software is sticky, and some software is very sticky because it is mission critical, highly integrated into the business workflows, and/or there is significant user interaction.
For example, if a company has 500 sales people all happily using salesforce.com, why would a CIO disrupt everyone's work to switch to a cheaper but different product? The cost of salesforce.com is not a significant cost to the business, but the cost of disrupting people's productivity swamps any savings you might from switching to a cheaper service.
This is similar to someone telling a company to drop MS Office because OpenOffice or GoogleDocs have equivalent "good enough" functionality and are free. There is no 'commodity' version of MS Office which looks and behaves exactly like MS Office but just with a lower price.
I've already switched by browser's default search to http://duckduckgo.com, and honestly haven't noticed a difference, although alot of my searches are already on more domain-specific sites like stackoverflow.com so I bypass generic search engine.
Now, it could be time to switch back to firefox from chrome, esp. if google decides to scroogle AdBlock Plus from the Chrome Web Store too.
