limagnolia··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
Being normal doesn't necessarily mean it isn't gatekeeping- gatekeeping is also quite "normal" in many cases.

That being said, I think there needs to be some standard, and peer review seems like the best we have come up with. But is the current status quo for scientific publication the best we can do? I think that is an open question and we should be able to openly discuss alternatives.

But the brand no longer commands the massive delta, everyone knows that current craftsman is nothing like old craftsman.
limagnolia··on Luanti removed from Google Play due to baseless AI copyright notice
Sue Microsft, not Google. It was Microsoft who filed the DMCA notice, Microsft is the responsible party.
limagnolia··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
The automobile, the transistor, the Internet, and basically every other technology ~could~ be used by a police state. I'm not sure how that is a helpful rule at all.
limagnolia··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
Can you deposit checks from the webapp? That is the feature most often missing in banking webapps. It isn't something I need often, fortunately.
limagnolia··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
1)People who choose not to buy insurance because we don't force them to. 2) Adults in the remaining states that chose not to extend medicare who don't earn enough to qualify for ACA subsidies. 3) Adults who qualify for subsidies but still can't afford relativly expensive ACA plans. 4) Others? Not sure if that number includes noncitizens who don't qualify for assistance?
limagnolia··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Based on what I found, you pay a lower rate for children, but you pay for each child, they don't do a fixed rate for the whole family.
limagnolia··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Most other countries don't even have a residency system. After graduation you simply apply for and work as a junior dr. for some number of years. No federal funding of a 'residency' position necessary.

Where are you getting the 150 to visit a Dr. in the US? The copay is usually much, much lower than that.
limagnolia··on Google buys crashed airline Spirit's data at auction
Well, it also says that the data was already scrubbed. Arguments have been made that this is insufficient.
limagnolia··on Google buys crashed airline Spirit's data at auction, because AI
The article claims it has already been removed, that Google is committing to remove anything leftover that they find.

You can argue that its a bad deal, shouldn't be allowed period, etc. But that is a different argument than saying that there is no scrutiny.

limagnolia··on Google has acquired the data of failed US airline Spirit
Sure, you can argue that its a bad deal, shouldn't be allowed period, etc. But that is a different argument than saying that there is no scrutiny.
limagnolia··on Google has acquired the data of failed US airline Spirit
It is being scrutinized. The sale is overseen by the courts. Also, the media is scrutinizing. Also, PII has already been addressed by the court, from the article: "If you’ve flown Spirit and worry that Google will soon know about a testy conversation you had with the airline’s call center, you’re being told not to worry. The court filing says the data was deidentified before being put on sale and Google has promised to scrub any PII it finds in the trove."
limagnolia··on Google has acquired the data of failed US airline Spirit
The article directly addresses this concern:

"If you’ve flown Spirit and worry that Google will soon know about a testy conversation you had with the airline’s call center, you’re being told not to worry. The court filing says the data was deidentified before being put on sale and Google has promised to scrub any PII it finds in the trove."

limagnolia··on CEO Just Fired 500 People Because He Says Zillow Is More Efficient Without Them
There a lots of downsides to layoffs, and I don't think your #3 is the biggest at all. The morale hit across the company is huge. Furthermore, it will have negative effects on recruiting and retention well into the future.

Layoffs are an incredibly bad idea for most companies. There are almost always better alternatives.

limagnolia··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
Based on the wording of the response, and a review of the ship tracking data, it appears that Zuckerburgs yacht may have been actively communicating on a different channel, and once they switched back, the assistance from the cruise ship was already underway.

Again, more facts may be revealed, but as of right now, I don;'t see any reason to believe the crew did anything wrong.

I haven't found any source that states what channel the request for assistance came in on. But multiple sources are reporting that the coast guard determined they were not in distress.

limagnolia··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
Reading the facts of this incident, it seems like much to do about nothing. The crew are saying that the request came in on a frequency they weren't monitoring (and apparently were not required to monitor.) The Coast Guard determined it was not an emergency. The criticism lies with those who failed to properly fuel their boat, not the crew who didn't respond to a request that came over a frequency they were not on. They can't monitor every frequency. I am open to new facts being discovered that changes this assessment.
limagnolia··on Federal Communications Commission scraps limit on broadcast TV ownership
This does not seem to undo caps on ownership within broadcast markets, though? That seems like a more sensible cap to me. Of course, if Congress made the cap and didn't give authority to the FCC to adjust it, they shouldn't be trying. But I'm not familiar with the statutes involved.
limagnolia··on Taylor Farms has rewritten its cyclospora statement four times in sixteen days
Yes! I have no idea if that is the case here, but absolutely yes.
limagnolia··on Show HN: Bor – Open-source policy management for Linux desktops
I use Ansible or Pyinfra more recently to accomplish these sorts of tasks. Not quite the same concept, but I think it accomplishes the same goal for me.
limagnolia··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
Curiosly, they only say this to their European customers. It isn't clear that they plan to continue supporting North American customers.

Either way, eventually operations will halt, because existing products will be out of their update commitments.

Headline would be more accurate if it said "is winding down".

limagnolia··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure the button says 'buy' or something similiar, not 'rent'.
limagnolia··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
I would argue that we don't need new regulations, we need to enforce existing laws against fraud. It is fraudulent to sell something and then later disable ones access to the thing you sold them access to.
limagnolia··on What does privatization of the US Postal Service mean?
I'm not sure that there is any law forcing you to accept it, but if you have a mailbox, it will get put into it. I don't think there is any law requiring anyone to have a mailbox, though.
limagnolia··on What does privatization of the US Postal Service mean?
Is it? I don't think I would miss the junk mail delivery service if it went away entirely.
limagnolia··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
It was my understanding that this is actually something they are doing with GTA VI.
limagnolia··on The labor share of income in the US is at its lowest post-war level
And many laborers have retirement accounts and pension funds that are also capital owners, so they benefit from increases in capital too.
limagnolia··on We all depend on open source. We will defend it together
From the horses mouth: "Michael Niedermayer, a leading FFmpeg developer, tweeted, “I am the main developer fixing security issues in FFmpeg. I have fixed over 2700 Google OSS fuzz issues. I have fixed most of the BIGSLEEP issues. And i disagree with the comments FFmpeg (Kieran) has made about Google. From all companies, Google has been the most helpful & nice.” https://thenewstack.io/ffmpeg-to-google-fund-us-or-stop-send...

Sounds like Google has been very helpful and nice.

Maybe you posted the wrong link- I don't see anything at all about Google making a report or being asked to do anything and declining?
