liketochill··on Microsoft Teams is getting big performance improvements next month
I’m actually happy that any chat message in teams is pretty much gone forever as soon as is it off the screen. It keeps people from using it for anything other than one off questions.
liketochill··on Google Has Developed Its Own Data Center Server Chips
I wonder what is unlocked by creating their chip that couldn’t also be achieved using intel and nvidia products? Surely the same product can be delivered but the main difference is energy use?

What % of google’s costs is energy? Is the whole exercise of making their own chips just to save some energy cost or is there a bigger goal with it?

liketochill··on One of the biggest landlords in Los Angeles just defaulted on $755M
Can you explain what the existential threat in an entire state or a small town is that requires people to live in the most expensive and desireable cities?
liketochill··on One of the biggest landlords in Los Angeles just defaulted on $755M
There are probably 100 cities in the fly over states just like KC.

I live in a small town because I could not afford the big city near by.

Life is full of compromises, not living in the most expensive city in the country shouldn’t be considered a hardship.

liketochill··on One of the biggest landlords in Los Angeles just defaulted on $755M
I randomly chose Kansas City Kansas and there are houses there for less than 200k that looked ok.

Living in San Francisco is not necessary. Live somewhere cheaper and stop complaining that desireable places to live are more expensive.

I self host redmine. I offered plan.io $300/yr on my corporate card but they insisted on $600. Too bad for them.
liketochill··on Japan's hydrogen strategy does nothing for decarbonisation: study
I thought we were taking about battery capacity preventing a blackout during a major grid outage and not installed renewable capacity meeting the demand.
liketochill··on Japan's hydrogen strategy does nothing for decarbonisation: study
Or a lot of difference in elevation. With 900m head you can get 8 MW from only 1.5 m^3/s in a pipe less than 2 feet in diameter.

How long can south Australia power their load from batteries? I thought they had the one 100MWH battery so basically could power 100k house for an hour? And that battery was over 100 million dollars.
liketochill··on Stop Building on Corporate-Controlled Languages
Different languages have different libraries with different functions that take different arguments and have different data structures. The tools you used with the old language might be different or required modification to work with the new language.

Maybe libraries they had written to solve problems in their domain have to be recreated.

It seems like switching from Delphi to Java or Go and changing the entire ecosystem would take a bit of time to get back to making the same productivity as with the toolset one has been using for a decade?

liketochill··on The UK is wasting a lot of wind power
Generally outages, deratings, and unavailable equipment have to be reported to the system operator. Not doing so and then claiming for lost revenue from broken equipment due to curtailment would be fraud.
liketochill··on The UK is wasting a lot of wind power
Nit: the steam is not released to atmosphere, it is sent directly to the condensers. Treated water to use in boilers and turbines without leaving deposits and damaging them is precious, so it is a closed cycle and not vented to atmosphere whenever possible
liketochill··on An online IDE for visual programming in Prolog
Yeah I love function block programming for control systems.
liketochill··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
I have also found old papers to be the best for learning a new concept - they make it as simple as it can be. A colleague of mine wrote a paper that proves that negative numbers exist and would often cite archimedes, Galileo, newton, etc in his bibliographies. I think he loved crediting the first person to come up with whatever idea or concept he was using.

liketochill··on Japan to invest on nuclear energy in major policy shift
Nuclear plants can respond to changes in reactive power demand in ~100ms. It is a function of the voltage regulator and not the prime mover. Perhaps you didn’t mean reactive?
liketochill··on UWaterloo Steam Tunnels (2016)
Carleton university in Ottawa has a network of tunnels linking different buildings on campus as well. You can go from res to classes without going outside when it is -20.

I use Redmine
liketochill··on US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved
Glad it will work there. There has been local opposition to new transmission lines in the USA (see Maine recently) so when folks say “just build powerlines” all I can think of is the difficulty of the land assembly and permitting. Technically it is easy, it is all the humans in the way that make it hard.
liketochill··on US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved
Do you have week long blackouts currently? In any given year you can count on a week where a panel only produces 10%. It just has to be cloudy or rainy. However much solar we add, even with storage to get through a night, needs some other source to get through the cloudy week, unless we are ok with blackouts.

liketochill··on Bipartisan Legislation to Ban TikTok
They need to be marketed to the public and lawmakers to get passed and like a cve with a catchy name and brand they get more attention with a good name. Eg 1200 page bill which includes the governments entire platform summed up as inflation reduction act
liketochill··on Fusion energy breakthrough by Livermore Lab
A breaker can use sf6 gas but usually that is at 60 kV and above. For 35 kV and below vacuum bottle breakers are much cheaper than sf6.

individual wind turbines are not generating at more than 13.8kV so I would be surprised if they had any sf6 in them.
