lighttower··on Saudi Arabia executes 81 people in show of force by an emboldened Moh bin Salman
She was a 10 or 12 year old at the time. So her memory of the details would be in question. Notwithstanding, there is data to support that alcohol related offences are punished by execution [1]. They seem to make a difference between production of alcohol within Saudi Arabia and consumption.

lighttower··on Saudi Arabia executes 81 people in show of force by an emboldened Moh bin Salman
I'm actually afraid of visiting Saudi, even for business. A new woman in the office shared her experience growing up in Saudi (her father worked in oil and gas) in a high end foreign person's compound. schools are in English and women can wear whatever they want. She had an Australian neighbor that made homebrew wine in his basement. He was decapitated. They moved back to Calgary shortly thereafter.
lighttower··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
Underrated comment. The investors were investing in her because she was willing to take the risk of move fast and break things (where things in this case is the diagnostic accuracy of blood tests). She got nailed, ironically, not for hurting patients, but instead for harming the egos of the investors.

As a participant in the startup investment world you are willing Participant of SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF. This is roughly equivalent speak for REALITY DISTORTION FIELD. The point is you as an investor are a willing participant in believing that something more is possible than what has already been achieved.

If you're a founder: you should be worried about being held to a legal standard of the representations and warranties. That section is in every share purchase agreement and it's the stuff that gets you sued. And sometimes, like in this case, it's WIRE FRAUD and it's criminal. Crazy. We need another section to replace REPS AND WARRANTIES.

lighttower··on Changes in Dutch streets throughout the years (photo album)
I don't understand why Dutch leave their home country. It seems so idyllic from the outside! What's San Mateo got that Utrecht doesn't? :-)

I want the Thinkpad keyboard layout. Big arrow keys. PgUp and PgDn full size. MENU button where the PrtSc button is.
lighttower··on System76 Pangolin Linux-first laptop with AMD internals now in stock
Before you conclude that Thinkpad have good Linux support, go on over to lenovo's Q&A forum and look up battery issues for the t14. At this point in time I've spent so much time on this that I could have easily saved 5k or 10k by having a machine that just worked!
lighttower··on Suppose I wanted to kill a lot of pilots
I have always had trouble making short term attainable goals. For example I want to restart doing yoga. But it's been a few years since I've done yoga and now I can no longer touch my toes. Whereas before I was able to do the full primary sequence of ashtanga. Every time I think of my decline it kills any motivation to do anything to stop it. Anyone have any tips?
lighttower··on The End of Retirement (2014)
Wow. This speaks to me. What led you down thinking that it's ok to downgrade all aspects of social status and comforts? I know some friends that are routinely starting from zero again and again. One of them is having some remorseful on not building anything lasting, like having kids or long term building on a single career
lighttower··on Observing my cellphone switch towers
How much does the positioning of the phone in the car affect it's antenna effectiveness and directionality. I'm astounded that you can "bury" the phone in a pit beside the gear shift with a pile of metal on top (the dashboard) and it still works.

The engineering me needs to place antennas optimally! Even though burying the phone in a pit and it still works it still irks me and I want to see it in an optimal placement where it is minimally shielded. Why don't car manufacturers have a place for the phone in the roof or something so that it gets optimal antenna placement? Yes it would be unseemly but wouldn't we get much better reception?

The book you quoted, The World of Yesterday, is fantastic. Thank you! What a fantastic read. I am astounded how much the world of the past, as it is described in storybooks, was made-up, and the truth was grim and desperate.

Have you tried FZF? [1] Fuzzy matching. It's loaded as a vimplug but binds to bash. It even fuzzy matches your bash history (CTRL-R).

Not affiliated in anyway. Just a very happy customer, but want to plug PDF Studio [1]. I've used Atril, Evince, Adobe, PDFXChange (through WINE) and this PDF Studio (not FOSS) is worth every penny. It even interfaces with docusign (but you don't need it since you can import real digital signature) their support is amazing, and linux is first class there.

lighttower··on Google bans Podcast Addict app over non-approved Covid-19 content
I've seen so many of these posts saying, Google removes this or that from the store. But until now I did not realize how criminal this is. I know the Dev. Super guy, addresses help questions from thousands of users personally all without the jaded condescending that many maintainers effuse.
lighttower··on Ignition: An Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellants (1972) [pdf]
I read the book cover to cover after finding references to it by Derek Lowe on his pipeline blog [1]. Learned a lot about chemistry and the enormous investment that went into the space age (mostly because of overlapping technology for ICBMs and other rocket powered weapons) which is daunting as this book ONLY covers what's been declassified as of the 80s in propelants.

lighttower··on Chinese scientists destroyed proof of virus in December?
The narrative in China right now is finding ways of externalizing the problem. One narrative either pushed intentionally or by fake news sources are blaming American soldiers that were in Wuhan for a military fitness competition. While it sounds crazy it's widely believed. The source works for government in Guangzhou.
lighttower··on Superfast Nike shoes are creating a problem
I've always wondered what the point is of shaving a couple of seconds from ones time. What you suggest is a worthwhile pursuit. It's a little like war, a new technology can completely turn the tables until everyone uses it.
