lights0123··on Show HN: HipScript – Run CUDA in the browser with WebAssembly and WebGPU
I do do feature detection—WebGPU is blocked on Release Firefox regardless of config, you'll need nightly. It does support Safari with its experimental mode enabled for example.
lights0123··on Liberating Wi-Fi on the ESP32 [video]
https://www.keacher.com/xmas24/ uses OOK for data communication, with the benefit of energy harvesting the WiFi signal to not require batteries.
lights0123··on Show HN: Svader – Create GPU-rendered Svelte components
They're identical to Safari, macOS theme and all.
lights0123··on 1B nested loop iterations
PyPy uses just-in-time compilation, so for arithmetic-heavy computations not involving the GC, it should absolutely be faster.
lights0123··on You-get: Dumb downloader that scrapes the web
YouTube doesn’t encrypt the media stream other than TLS. Decoding the video can be skipped though.
lights0123··on NewPipe on Linux, Using Android_translation_layer
https://github.com/wine-staging/wine-staging/commit/595f2f98...

A new strategy is used that is much faster: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Syscall-User-Dispatch-Queued

lights0123··on Arm is canceling Qualcomm's chip design license
The Raspberry Pi uses Broadcom, not Qualcomm chips. It also uses cores designed by Arm, which are not affected by today's news.
lights0123··on DuckStation
Yes, Qt is LGPL except for a few plugins that are GPL.
lights0123··on Attacking UNIX Systems via CUPS
Just to add a datapoint to the previous comment, my large public US university hands out public IPs to every device on WiFi. If there is a firewall, it doesn't block 8080 or 22.
lights0123··on Lesser known tricks, quirks and features of C
If the user can control the formatting string, they can write to pointers stored on the stack. It's important to use printf("%s", str) instead of printf(str).
lights0123··on GPU utilization can be a misleading metric
I interpret that comment as you're not going to be using every silicon block that the GPU provides, like video codecs and rasterizing. If you've maxed out compute without going over the power budget, for example, you'd likely still be able to decode video if the GPU has a separate block for it.
lights0123··on Mpv – A free, open-source, and cross-platform media player
libmpv is also amazing. It's a simple C API that allows you to render each frame into an OpenGL framebuffer or pixel array, using a fully hardware-accelerated path for the former.
lights0123··on Considerations when building embedded databases
> However, if you compile on an AWS EC2 instance (as you may want to do if there is a cloud component to your fishtank), then you get a 16-byte structure because int there is 8 bytes

I'm not familiar with any OS that EC2 would offer that uses an 8-byte int. A better example might be that long is the size of a pointer on Unix and microcontroller systems, but always 4 bytes on Windows.

lights0123··on I recreated Shazam’s algorithm with Go
Patents are enforceable in the US for even personal use without distribution.
lights0123··on How to optimize a CUDA matmul kernel for cuBLAS-like performance (2022)
Since 2016, you can use Eigen in CUDA C++ code and it just works: https://eigen.tuxfamily.org/dox/TopicCUDA.html
lights0123··on Optical PCIe 7.0 connection hits 128 GT/s
For DDR RAM, which uses 64 parallel lines. PCI-E transmits one bit per transfer, which has its practical bandwidth reduced after error correction.
lights0123··on Intel Unveils Lunar Lake Architecture
A big factor is that Apple buys out all of TSMC's capacity for new process nodes, so they get the smallest transistors that run at lower power and higher speeds.
lights0123··on Show HN: Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time
No. https://developers.cloudflare.com/rules/transform/managed-tr...
lights0123··on All of Microsoft's MacBook Air-beating benchmarks
With official vendor support: https://www.phoronix.com/news/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-X-Elite
lights0123··on Three.js Shading Language
If you’re ok with debugging shaders themselves outside an engine, SHADERed does an excellent job cross-platform: https://shadered.org/blog
lights0123··on Show HN: You can now cut and paste from scanned documents in Firefox
Looks like you're on Mac: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/text-recognition

There's also a chance your scanner's OCR function was recently enabled by default. The feature is still sitting as "planned for the future" in their PDF library: https://github.com/mozilla/pdf.js/issues/15843

lights0123··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
I've used vim from the reMarkable and a C interpreter in a root shell when my laptop was broken. On-screen keyboard wasn't the best experience though
lights0123··on SVG Viewer – View, edit, and optimize SVGs
Another web-based SVG tool I use regularly is https://jakearchibald.github.io/svgomg/, an extremely configurable optimizer.
lights0123··on Full Line Code Completion in JetBrains IDEs
"For example, if you’re using x86-64 architecture, the model will run on the CPU, whereas if you’re using ARM64 architecture, the model will use the power of your computer’s GPU."

I assume this actually means "we only support Apple Neural Engine for hardware acceleration".

lights0123··on Weird monitor bugs people sent me in the last 5 years (2022)
The operating system should be the one using that information in the first place—if you see two identical monitors connected, shouldn't you try and identify them based on the only discriminating factor you have?
lights0123··on The Wi-Fi only works when it's raining

lights0123··on Show HN: Invertornot.com – API to enhance your images in dark-mode
They're using ONNX Runtime to run the model, which has a C API: https://onnxruntime.ai/docs/get-started/with-c.html. You could also use any other ML inference library that supports the ONNX format.

You'd need to look at this project's code to see how it converts input data to the expected matrix format, though.

lights0123··on Why choose async/await over threads?
async/await tasks can be run in parallel on multiple threads, usually no more threads than there are hardware threads. This allows using the full capabilities of the machine, not just one core's worth. In a server environment with languages that support async/await but don't have the ability to execute on multiple cores like Node.js and Python, this is usually done by spawning many duplicate processes and distributing incoming connections round-robin between them.
lights0123··on New York Times takedown domino effect hits nearly 2000 Wordle clones
...of which the vast majority were bit-for-bit identical GitHub forks.
lights0123··on Linux market share passes 4% for first time; macOS dominance declines
What problems are you running into with ROS on ARM? I've used it both on Raspberry Pis and ARM Macs with Docker (both natively and with translation) needing no modifications.
